    Contestations, Ownership, Access and Ideology: Policy Development Challenges for the Digitization of African Heritage and Liberation Archives

    The digitization of heritage material for publication on the worldwide web is a site of struggle and the real challenges are not technological or technical but social and political. What is at stake is the politics of memory in digital form and how whatever is selected for digitization projects frames research agendas and plays a role in repackaging history. The development dimension is also paramount, the issue of how these projects enhance the public interest, service researchers in the South and promote South-South dialogue. This paper concentrates on policy rather than on narrow technical issues and engages the larger questions which frame digitization projects, such as national policies and processes around heritage, political identities, contested archives, the commodification of the archive and the archive as shaper of national histories. This paper also gives a brief overview of the South African experience, examines notions of partnership that cut across international boundaries, interrogates the ideological and intellectual ramifications, including issues of content selection and access, and engages in policy framework discussions and recommendations

    Mandated reporting, while an ethical and legal requirement, often stirs emotions in mental health professionals that may prevent them from making the report. Fear, anxiety and countertransference may all interfere with good judgment. The Clinical Supervisor maintains the responsibility to ensure reports are made but must also address the clinician’s emotional concerns. This article presents two case studies that illustrate ways a supervisor can support the supervisee through mandated reporting, and what can happen when a supervisee fails to comply with the legal mandate

    We study the survival probability for long times in an open spherical billiard, extending previous work on the circular billiard. We provide details of calculations regarding two billiard configurations, specifically a sphere with a circular hole and a sphere with a square hole. The constant terms of the long-term survival probability expansions have been derived analytically. Terms that vanish in the long time limit are investigated analytically and numerically, leading to connections with the Riemann hypothesis

    Evaluating the exact infinitesimal values of area of Sierpinski's carpet and volume of Menger's sponge

    Very often traditional approaches studying dynamics of self-similarity processes are not able to give their quantitative characteristics at infinity and, as a consequence, use limits to overcome this difficulty. For example, it is well know that the limit area of Sierpinski's carpet and volume of Menger's sponge are equal to zero. It is shown in this paper that recently introduced infinite and infinitesimal numbers allow us to use exact expressions instead of limits and to calculate exact infinitesimal values of areas and volumes at various points at infinity even if the chosen moment of the observation is infinitely faraway on the time axis from the starting point. It is interesting that traditional results that can be obtained without the usage of infinite and infinitesimal numbers can be produced just as finite approximations of the new ones

    Verifying Sierpi\'nski and Riesel Numbers in ACL2

    A Sierpinski number is an odd positive integer, k, such that no positive integer of the form k * 2^n + 1 is prime. Similar to a Sierpinski number, a Riesel number is an odd positive integer, k, such that no positive integer of the form k * 2^n + 1 is prime. A cover for such a k is a finite list of positive integers such that each integer j of the appropriate form has a factor, d, in the cover, with 1 < d < j. Given a k and its cover, ACL2 is used to systematically verify that each integer of the given form has a non-trivial factor in the cover.Comment: In Proceedings ACL2 2011, arXiv:1110.447

    Small-Worlds, Mazes and Random Walks

    We establish a relationship between the Small-World behavior found in complex networks and a family of Random Walks trajectories using, as a linking bridge, a maze iconography. Simple methods to generate mazes using Random Walks are discussed along with related issues and it is explained how to interpret mazes as graphs and loops as shortcuts. Small-World behavior was found to be non-logarithmic but power-law in this model, we discuss the reason for this peculiar scalingComment: article, 7 figure
