On the growth of cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter groups

    Get PDF
For an arbitrary cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter group G with finite generator set S and complete growth function P(x)/Q(x), we provide a recursion formula for the coefficients of the denominator polynomial Q(x) which allows to determine recursively the Taylor coefficients and the pole behavior of the growth function of G in terms of its Coxeter subgroup structure. We illustrate this in the easy case of compact right-angled hyperbolic n-polytopes. Finally, we provide detailed insight into the case of Coxeter groups with at most 6 generators, acting cocompactly on hyperbolic 4-space, by considering the three combinatorially different families discovered and classified by Lanner, Kaplinskaya and Esselmann, respectively.Comment: 24 page

Photometric distances to young stars in the inner galactic disk

We present results of the first extensive and deep CCD photometric survey carried out in the field of the open cluster Trumpler 27, an object in the constellation of Sagittarius not far from the Galaxy center. We look for young stars clumps that might plausibly be associated with spiral structure. Wide-field UBVI photometry combined with infrared information allows us to reconstruct the distribution in reddening and distance of young stars in the field using the Color-Color and Color-Magnitude diagrams. The analysis of our data, combined too with extensive spectroscopy taken from literature shows that the real entity of Trumpler 27 as an open cluster is far from being firmly stated. In fact, instead of finding a relatively compact group of stars confined to a small distance range, we found that stars associated to Trumpler 27 are, indeed, a superposition of early type stars seen along the line of sight extending over several kiloparsecs beyond even the center of the galaxy. We demonstrate that at each distance range it becomes possible to generate a color-magnitude diagram resembling that of an open cluster. This way, our analysis indicates that what was considered an open cluster characterized by a significant age spread is a stellar continuum that reaches its maximum number of stars at approximately 3.5 kpc from the Sun, the distance of the Scutum-Crux arm approximately. At the same time, and after analyzing the way early type stars distribute with distance, we found some of these stellar groups may be linked, within the distance errors, with other inner spiral arms of our galaxy, including the Near 3 kpc arm at approximately 5 kpc from the Sun. However, very young stars by themselves do not seem to trace strongly the inner spiral arms since they are distributed evenly across several kiloparsecs toward the center of the Galaxy.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, to be published in A&

New age-metallicity diagnostic diagram for the Washington photometric system

    Get PDF
The age calibration of the Washington deltaT1 index is mainly used to estimate ages of star clusters older than 1 Gyr, no age-metallicity degeneracy effect is considered. We have profusely exploited synthetic T1 versus C-T1 colour magnitude diagrams aiming at exploring the intrinsic behaviour of the deltaT1 index. The analysis shows that deltaT1 varies with age and metal content as well. In general, the dependence on age weakens for ages greater than ~ 6 Gyr, and results even less sensitive to age as the metallicity decreases. For ages younger than ~ 5 Gyr deltaT1 shows a strong correlation with both age and metallicity. The deltaC index -defined as deltaT1 for the C passband- is also a combined measurement of age and metallicity. We introduce a new age-metallicity diagnostic diagram, deltaT1 versus deltaC - deltaT1, which has shown the ability of unambiguously providing age and metallicity estimates, simultaneously. The new procedure allows to derive ages from 1 up to 13 Gyr and metallicities [Fe/H] from -2.0 up to +0.5 dex, and is independent of the cluster reddening and distance modulus. It does solve the constraints found in the deltaT1 index and surpasses the performance of the standard giant branch metallicity method. All these features make the diagnostic diagram a powerful tool for estimating accurate ages as well as metallicities.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

The purpose of our study was to investigate the efficacy and toxicity of paclitaxel in patients with relapsed or refractory epithelial ovarian cancer in the context of a large multicentre study performed in the UK and Eire. Patients with previously treated epithelial carcinoma of the ovary or fallopian tube who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were entered in the study. Eligibility criteria included: measurable or evaluable disease; Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status 0-2; up to three prior chemotherapy regimens, one of which had to contain a platinum agent; adequate haematological, renal and hepatic function; and no significant cardiac history. Patients received either 175 mg m-2 or 135 mg m-2 paclitaxel. The lower dose was administered to patients who had received more than two prior chemotherapy regimens. Paclitaxel was given by i.v. infusion over 3 h every 21 days. Response was assessed at three-cycle intervals or earlier if required. A total of 155 patients were registered for the study in the UK of whom 140 were eligible for response and toxicity evaluation, and 12 patients were assessed for toxicity only. Hair loss was the most frequently reported toxicity, with 74% (119/152) of patients reporting grade 3 alopecia. The most frequently reported serious toxicity was neutropenia, with 49% (74/152) of patients experiencing neutropenia grade 3 or 4. The response rate was 16% [two complete responders (CR), 20 partial responders (PR)], the median duration of response was 275 days and median survival was 244 days. Paclitaxel is active in relapsed and platinum-resistant epithelial ovarian cancer. It is well tolerated and can be given in an out-patient setting. The UK and Eire experience is very similar to that of US investigators in this group of patients. Further work is required to assess the optimal use of the drug in both first- and second-line therapy

Occupational mobility, family and city. A proposal for the study of migrations in Patagonia (Neuquén: 1960-1990)

This work intends to address the various elements that generated different opportunities to a group of families of migrants. On the one hand, we analyze the role that family, relatives and social relations had in what some authors called “urban integration cycle”. On the other hand, we evaluate the importance of location in the urban fabric in the achievement of a rationality, able to take advantage of a social space which distributes opportunities, although they were not unlimited. The particularity of this study is not precisely the use of quantitative evidence, in this case demographic, but in the wish to step in front of a serial point of view. In our case, quantitative is the gateway to a set of social behaviors that were not necessarily uniform. Away from averages and general trends, our purpose is to reconstruct the full range of uses that migrants made of a stage that retraced a path of complexity.Fil: Perren, Joaquin. Socio-residential differentiation in the medium-sized cities of argentina. The case of Neuquén in the early 1990´s

    Get PDF
Critical Care Nurses Inadequately Assess SAPS II Scores of Very Ill Patients in Real Life

    Get PDF
Background. Reliable ICU severity scores have been achieved by various healthcare workers but nothing is known regarding the accuracy in real life of severity scores registered by untrained nurses. Methods. In this retrospective multicentre audit, three reviewers independently reassessed 120 SAPS II scores. Correlation and agreement of the sum-scores/variables among reviewers and between nurses and the reviewers' gold standard were assessed globally and for tertiles. Bland and Altman (gold standard—nurses) of sum scores and regression of the difference were determined. A logistic regression model identifying risk factors for erroneous assessments was calculated. Results. Correlation for sum scores among reviewers was almost perfect (mean ICC = 0.985). The mean (±SD) nurse-registered SAPS II sum score was 40.3 ± 20.2 versus 44.2 ± 24.9 of the gold standard (P < 0.002 for difference) with a lower ICC (0.81). Bland and Altman assay was +3.8 ± 27.0 with a significant regression between the difference and the gold standard, indicating overall an overestimation (underestimation) of lower (higher; >32 points) scores. The lowest agreement was found in high SAPS II tertiles for haemodynamics (k = 0.45–0.51). Conclusions. In real life, nurse-registered SAPS II scores of very ill patients are inaccurate. Accuracy of scores was not associated with nurses' characteristics

Sex, Lies and Marketing: Miramax and the Development of the \u27Quality Indie\u27 Blockbuster

The August 1989 release of sex, lies, and videotape by Miramax marked a turning point in American independent cinema. In fact, the film should be perceived as central to the development of New Hollywood aesthetics, economics, and structure. sex, lies, and videotape ushered in the era of the “indi blockbusters—films that, on a smaller scale, replicate the exploitation marketinig and box-office performance of the major studio high-concept event pictures. On a cost-to-earning ration, Steven Soderbergh’s creation –with its 1.1milliondollarbudgetand1.1 million dollar budget and 24 million plus in North America box office—was a better investment than Batman, which—at an investment of 50millionreturned50 million-returned 250 million in domestic box office. These figures begin to suggest how sex, lies, and videotape helped to set the standard for low-budget, niche-based distribution in the 90s and to lay the groundwork for a bifurcation within the entertainment industry
