4d Lorentzian Holst action with topological terms

We study the Hamiltonian formulation of the general first order action of general relativity compatible with local Lorentz invariance and background independence. The most general simplectic structure (compatible with diffeomorphism invariance and local Lorentz transformations) is obtained by adding to the Holst action the Pontriagin, Euler and Nieh-Yan invariants with independent coupling constants. We perform a detailed canonical analysis of this general formulation (in the time gauge) exploring the structure of the phase space in terms of connection variables. We explain the relationship of these topological terms, and the effect of large SU(2) gauge transformations in quantum theories of gravity defined in terms of the Ashtekar-Barbero connection

Rejuvenation and Memory in model Spin Glasses in 3 and 4 dimensions

We numerically study aging for the Edwards-Anderson Model in 3 and 4 dimensions using different temperature-change protocols. In D=3, time scales a thousand times larger than in previous work are reached with the SUE machine. Deviations from cumulative aging are observed in the non monotonic time behavior of the coherence length. Memory and rejuvenation effects are found in a temperature-cycle protocol, revealed by vanishing effective waiting times. Similar effects are reported for the D=3$site-diluted ferromagnetic Ising model (without chaos). However, rejuvenation is reduced if off-equilibrium corrections to the fluctuation-dissipation theorem are considered. Memory and rejuvenation are quantitatively describable in terms of the growth regime of the spin-glass coherence length.Comment: Extended protocols. Accepted in Phys. Rev. B. 10 postscript figure

Plutarco e l’arte del Settecento europeo

El valor moral y político de las Vidas Paralelas convirtió a sus personajes en tema para la pintura y la escultura-relieve europeo. En esta ponencia se analiza la importancia que tuvo la pintura italiana del XVI como eco de las obras de Plutarco y la influencia de estas sobre todo en la pintura neoclásica francesa, italiana, española, alemana e inglesa. Contribuyó a ello sin duda la creación de las Academias de Bellas Artes a partir de la 2ª mitad del XVII y la política propagandística de los reyes de estos siglos (Austrias y Borbones) así como de las familias nobles italianas que ven en los personajes plutarqueos un ejemplo de las virtudes y valores de los que presumen. La versatilidad de estos personajes hizo posible la pervivencia pictórica de las Vidas Paralelas con los movimientos inspirados por la Revolución Francesa.Universidad de Málaga. Contribución al XII Congreso de la Sociedad Española de Plutarquistas (trienal).This paper trays to resolve the syntactical problem posed by the datives of the comparative phrase ὥσπερ ἄκροις τισὶν ἢ χερρονήσοις ἀνέχουσιν ἐκ βυθοῦ (Plu., De facie 938D), by changing into ἀνεχούσης the plural dativ ἀνέχουσιν we read in the codices E and B. On the other side, and as a consequence of the above solution, the author proposes to pay a greater attention to the alternative ἄκραις (instead of ἄκροις) which Turnebus and the Basilensis offer, may be as a lecture coming from a lost manuscript.Universidad de Málaga. Espacios imaginarios en Plutarco:interpretación místico-literaria de la superficie celeste de la luna (De Facie 94CC-945B)

Texto de comunicación presentada al X Congreso Internacional de la IPS, celebrado en Delfos (Grecia)Following the line of stilistic interpretation about the Sylla’s Myth in De facie in orbe Lunae I have made in other previous publications (1998, 2002, 2010, and 2011), I propose now to analyse the pages 944C-945B, concerning the celestial surface of the moon. My principal aim in this paper is to underline the lingüistic procedures (fonology, semantic, syntax, morphology etc.) Plutarch uses for enphatizing his reflections on the Moon’s roll concerning the afterlife destiny of man. In this case the spacial topic is the Elysian plain, where the transformation of men into demons and the eventual ascension and fall of his nous to and from the Sun is operated.Universidad de Málaga. Los habitantes de la luna. Interpretaciones textuales y traducciones de Plu., De fac. 944C-945C

La culminación del viaje espiritual del hombre tras la muerte, tal como se lee en los capítulos finales del De facie, consiste en la superación de las sombras proyectadas hacia la Luna por la tierra (el Hades) y la existencia del intelecto como démones en la parte superior de nuestro astro, que mira y aspira amorosamente al Sol, un reino de luz en el que apenas quedan huellas sensoriales y que ocasionalmente se convierte en lugar de inflexión para nuevas existencias. El texto es de difícil interpretación y los traductores e intérpretes antiguos y modernos han tenido sus más y sus menos para entenderlo. En nuestro análisis de este pasaje, principalmente textual, estudiamos la forma en que los traductores y comentaristas del XVI y XVII, así como los editores desde la Aldina hasta nuestros días han tratado de superar esas dificultades textuales, filosóficas y simplemente de sentido.Universidad de Málaga. Pendiente de redacción definitiva para su publicaciónThe principal aim of this paper is to make evident the stilistic values of Plutarch’s text in a concret passage of the scientific part of the dialogue De facie in orbe Lunae. In this case I will analyse from this stilistic point of view the discussion between Lamprias and Pharnaces concerning the earth nature of the moon. The abundance of words referring to the elements and their physical nature, the literary procedures to underline them, the use of diferent verbs according to Lamprias’ philosophical arguments, and the suitability of the rhetorical clausules for the sense of phrases, denote a particular interest of Plutarch in this passage, whose philosophical sense also can be better understand by means of such analyse.Universidad de Málaga. The unarmed gods. Astral implications in certain blessing and curse formulas

FFI 2016-79798-P, del MINECO).One of the basic principles of the religious attitude and of the magics is the possibility to involve superior beings (gods, saints, heroes, demons or other entities) in the fulfillment of our desires and objectives, when these are difficult to achieve or pose some degree of insecurity in its compliance. The most common forms of involvement are the prayer with which the faithful seeks sympathy for their cause of those superior beings or the magical ritual with which to submit their will so that with their power they fulfill our own well-being or the curse against our enemies. The problem appears when these higher beings really lack their own will being subject to the mechanical movement of the universe, such as the gods of astrology, that is, the planets. In this case, effectiveness does not depend on the voluntary power of these higher beings, but on their astronomical positions and astrological attributions that Ptolemy reduces to pretended scientific parameters. In my proposal I will start with some magical formulas of astral component (such as those published in CCAG III, 45-46 or in some magical papyri) to show how the rituals and aims indicated in them are really in keeping with the astrological doctrine of the Tetrabiblos and the explanations of its Anonymous Commentary concerning the physical, spiritual and professional nature of the involved individuals.Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucia Tech. Echarle Aceite a la Lámpara. El Sabio (Anaxágoras) y el Político (Pericles)

En el capítulo 16 de la Vida de Pericles Plutarco, para censurar que el político ateniense se desentendía de sus amigos ocupado por sus numerosas obligaciones de gobierno, cuenta una anécdota que sólo conocemos por él y que, además de esa crítica a propósito de los amigos, nos denuncia el contraste entre el βίος πρακτικός representado en esta ocasión por Pericles y el βίος θεωρητικός, propio del sabio, que a diferencia de aquél cuenta con la σχολή y que está representado aquí por Anaxágoras. Esta anécdota nos da pie (además de entender que va muy bien con el pensamiento de Plutarco y que probablemente tuviera una intención referida a su posición con los amigos del Imperio) para revisar de nuevo las relaciones entre el sabio y el político en esta Vida y la función biográfica que tiene la larga referencia a Anaxágoras en los capítulos iniciales de este libro en relación con la personalidad ética, política y filosófica que se nos quiere presentar de Pericles.Universidad de Málaga.
