“Style City” How London became a Fashion Capital

    Get PDF
The book explains and explores in a critical as well as a celebratory way the birth of today’s London Designer identity and the evolution of London Fashion Week. It starts in the mid-Seventies when the cultural recognition of British fashion designers scarcely existed. It covers the rise of Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Katharine Hamnett and many others who were to become household names. But at the same time, it relates the persistent failure of the British government and the clothing industry to respond to successive opportunities, leaving designers to create an industry for themselves. It ends with British designers established worldwide and London Fashion Week as one of the world’s four premier fashion events

Towards an Integrated, Liberal Theory of the Canadian State

    Get PDF
In this article, the author challenges the tendency in common law Canada to conflate the distinction between State and society. Following the analysis of Kenneth Dyson, the author contends that the State occupies a distinct sphere produced by or contained in the interconstitutive relationship of State institution, on the one hand, and State idea, on the other. The State concept is presented as neither merely active nor merely passive but as involving a relationship between action and reflection, between institution and idea. The author then analyses the broadly shared public values which are contained in the Canadian State idea when viewedfrom a liberal political perspective. That these values incrementally modulate the exercise of public power — and vice versa — argues for a State-society distinction which is not generally emphasized in common law Canada

Near Resonantly Enhanced Schlieren for Wake Flow Visualisation in Shock Tunnels

    Get PDF
A new variant of the resonantly enhanced schlieren or shadowgraph technique has been developed for visualising flows with small density gradients using seeded lithium metal as the resonant species. The novelty of the technique lies in the use of a diode laser as the light source for the visualisation rather than systems based upon solid-state-pumped dye lasers or spectral lamps. We present time-resolved visualisations of near-wake flows around a cylinder in a hypersonic freestream in a shock tunnel, showing flow structures that cannot be resolved using a conventional standard schlieren system. Furthermore, a method of removing, at least partially, the limitation related to line-ofsight visualisation is demonstrated

Time-Resolved Temperature Measurements in a Shock Tube Facility

This paper presents non-intrusive, time-resolved temperature measurements in the post-shock flow within a shock tube. We detail the technique, characterise its sensitivity to noise at various pressures, and present temperature measurements after the incident shock wave. Comparisons of experimental measurements with analytical correlations show good agreement with calculated post-shock temperatures at measurement rates of 1 kHz, but systematic errors occur at scan frequencies of 3 kHz, due to the limited bandwidth of our current detector system

Wake Flows in Coastal Oceans: An Experimental Study of Topographic Effects

    Get PDF
We consider the effects of coastal topography on the wake of an idealised headland model in a laboratory flume. Under a range of Reynolds numbers relevant to coastal oceans, we find that coherent eddies interact strongly with the headland shear layer and wake, affecting the width of the shear layer and the length of the wake. A preliminary investigation of turbulence statistics indicates that topography upstream of a headland can lead to a wider shear layer, a headland wake that extends further downstream, and enhanced horizontal diffusion out of the wake relative to the case with unperturbed oncoming flow

Introductory astronomy: setting goals and measuring achievements

    Get PDF
Astronomy has been very successful, growing to over 200 students in 2000 and 2001. Their response to the unit has been excellent and at least one quarter of them have suggested that they would consider doing a second astronomy unit if it were offered. Popularity and enrolment numbers are one measure of success but, with its diverse background of the students, is Astronomy achieving its goals? To address this question we have studied the student population enrolled in the unit and used a variety of survey tools to probe student attitudes and understanding, including a southern hemisphere version of the Astronomy Diagnostic Test (ADT)

Spirit Christology and trinity in the theology of David Coffey

    Get PDF
Spirit Christology has emerged as an important focus in recent theology. It offers new perspectives on christology and pneumatology. Can these new perspectives lead to advances in trinitarian theology itself? The classical theologies o f both East and West tended to express great reserve about moving too easily from the economy o f salvation to ideas about God in se. In the 20th century, Karl Rahner’s axiom that the “economic” Trinity is the “immanent” Trinity and vice versa helped lead to a significant erosion of this reserve, though not without controversy. Coffey (bom 1934) contributes significantly to reflection on this nexus of questions. He explores the relation of Spirit Christology to Logos Christology, arguing that the former need not supplant the latter. He reformulates Rahner’s axiom, suggesting ways of overcoming some o f its ambiguities. He shows that Spirit Christology offers an “ascending” basis for a “mutual love” pneumatology, in the service of a renewed trinitarian theology. This dissertation presents an analysis of Coffey’s achievement in its various contexts, historical and contemporary. It highlights his methodological balance. It argues that his theology represents an important development within the tradition, casting new light on issues of pressing contemporary interest

Medir el uso del espacio público urbano seguro.

    Get PDF
