    Alaska-Washington Trade Profile: Waterborne Commerce

    Get PDF
The overall purpose of this study was to establish a profile of Alaska-Washington waterborne movements, emphasizing commodity and port components that determine the needs of a physical distribution system. Specific objectives of the report are : 1. To determine Washington's share of the total Alaska-bound, waterborne traffic. 2. To present selected Washington-to-Alaska, waterborne movements by commodity and destination ports. 3. To present selected Alaska-to-Washington, waterborne movements by commodity and origination ports. 4. To determine implications of the trade profile with regard to future transportation and marketing needs. It should be noted that there are sizable noncommodity trade flows between the regions, i.e., labor, capital, and services that are not in this data base. This report contains only data on major commodity grouping and principal ports in Alaska. Additional information is on file at the Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Alaska, and at the Department of Agricultural Economics, Washington State University

Algebraic Monte Carlo procedure statistically analyzes performance parameters in large, complex systems. The individual effects of input variables can be isolated and individual input statistics can be changed without having to repeat the entire analysis

Claiming expertise from betwixt and between: Digital humanities librarians, emotional labor, and genre theory

    Get PDF
Librarians\u27 liminal (intermediate) position within academia situates us to make unique contributions to digital humanities (DH). In this article, we use genre theory, feminist theory, and theories of emotional labor to explore the importance of discourse mediation and affective labor to DH and the interplay between these areas and academic structural inequality. By claiming our expertise and making explicit work that is often not visible, we can advocate for new and varied roles for librarians in digital humanities. Our analysis is informed by both theory and practice, and it takes a dialogic approach that depends upon the interactions between the two

LAWS AND ATTITUDES CONCERNING PAUPERISM IN TEXAS DURING THE LATE NINETEENTH AND EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURIES

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the poor laws of Texas during the 19th and 20th centuries. It argues that even though laws required counties to provide enough aid to the poor to make them comfortable, commissioners provided only a limited amount of relief. This was due to a limited amount of funds and a negative public view toward paupers. This information is contextualized within the laws and attitudes present across the nation at the time. The research followed a historical approach to the materials which were found in newspapers, court records, commissioners’ court minutes, and collections within archives

Down to Gehenna or Up to the Throne : Rudyard Kipling\u27s Poem The Winners as the Key to Sam Mendes film 1917

The Applicability of Rudyard Kipling\u27s Poem \u27The Winners\u27 to Sam Mendes\u27 Film 1917. The key to Mendes 1917 lies in the early recitation of the last couplet of Rudyard Kipling\u27s poem The Winners : Down to Gehenna or Up to the Throne,/ He travels fastest who travels alone. The key words are Gehenna and Throne. Gehenna was a valley near Jerusalem where, in ancient times, children were burned alive as sacrifices to the war god Molech. (Outraged by such blatant transgression, God renamed Gehenna the tvalley of slaughter where thousands would lose their lives in combat, not only in ancient times but in this case of Mendes\u27 film in World War I.) Further, the World War I counterparts to those ancient high officials who sacrificed their children to Molech are the military leaders, whose decisions resulted in countless deaths. Conversely, within Mendes\u27 film, the word Throne is a subtle reference to the kingdom beyond this life where, according to the old spiritual Wayfaring Stranger (sung late in the movie to British troops preparing for a battle), those who die in war will meet God the Father and Jesus the Savior and be reunited with their parents. The conflict of world views associated with the two terms Gehenna and Throne is never resolved in this film, whose final meaning remains ambiguous
