Salivary Lipid Peroxidation and Total Sialic Acid Levels in Smokers and Smokeless Tobacco Users as MaraƟ Powder

    Get PDF
MaraƟ powder (MP), a different type of smokeless tobacco (ST) and prepared from a tobacco of species Nicotiana rustica Linn, is widely used in Turkey. We aimed to investigate the effects of MP on salivary total sialic acid (TSA) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and to compare these parameters in smokers and MP users (MPUs). The salivary TSA and MDA concentrations were significantly higher in the smokers and MPU than those of control subjects and also in MPU than that of smokers. We have also observed that as the number of cigarettes consumed and MP amount increases, TSA and MDA levels increase too. In smokers, MDA values were significantly correlated with the number of cigarettes smoked and the duration of smoking. In MPU, both MDA and TSA levels were significantly correlated with the duration of MP use and the amount of daily consumed MP. We have concluded increased salivary TSA and MDA levels associated in MPU and smokers. Results can help to evaluate harmful effects of these habits. It is important to point out that bigger change in the measured parameters has been observed for MP use. This observation may be an important indication of harmful effects of ST use as MP

Bilateral Double-headed Recurrent Pterygium: A Case Presentation and Literature Review

Pterygium is a frequent corneal disease characterized by growing of fibrovascular tissue from the bulbar conjunctiva onto the cornea. Although the causes of pterygium are not obvious, sun exposure is closely correlated with its development. Pterygium, especially double-headed pterygium is mostly seen in warm climate and in individuals who work outdoors. A minority of pterygium is double-headed (both temporal and nasal origins). Bilateral recurrent double-headed pterygium is a very rare condition. Here, we reported a 35-year-old male patient with bilateral recurrent double-headed pterygium. A brief review about the recent literature concerning the etiology, associated risk factors, operation types and management of patients with recurrent pterygium was also discussed. The patient was a field worker, smoker and had a family history of pterygium. There was no ocular surgery history except pterygium surgery 15 years ago in both eyes. A successful pterygium excision was performed under local anesthesia with the vertical split conjunctival autograft transplantation (CAT) in both temporal and nasal parts of the right eye (randomly) for cosmetic disfigurement and avoidance of recurrence. The pathological report was consistent with pterygium. At postoperative first week, first and 1.5th month visits, conjunctival autografts were in place and stable. No complications such as infection, corneal thinning or graft dislocation were seen. The patient was satisfied with his right eye and demanded the same surgery for his left eye. We suggest vertical split simultaneous CAT as a safe and useful surgical method for the treatment of recurrent double-headed pterygium; however, longer follow-up is required to confirm the outcome

Coronary stent embolization to the left ventricle and its management

    Get PDF
AbstractWe present a rare case of coronary stent embolization to the left ventricle during percutaneous coronary intervention. Fortunately we retrieved it successfully by a snare loop catheter. The approach to stents that move to the left ventricle is not clear. We may observe them conservatively without any intervention. We may also attempt to retrieve them having accepted the risk of systemic stent embolization while trying to catch it. To decide which approach is better we need more experience.<Learning objective: This manuscript will help the reader to have some idea about how to approach the stents embolized to the left ventricle. We present a review of literature in the manuscript. This will hopefully help the reader to see the results of previous approaches to the stents embolized to the left ventricle>

In the paper “The ‘Bubbling Up’ of Subterranean Politics in Europe”, which was published in 2013 in the Journal of Civil Society, mary Kaldor and Sabine Selchow attempted to reveal the specific qualities of the uprisings which emerged after the year 2010 in some European countries, such as Germany, Spain, Italy, England etc. According to the authors, the mode of organization which forms the main body of these emancipatory movements obtains its basic logic from the world of the Internet. The use of the Internet requires a re-evaluation of negative philosophical commentary regarding technology. In the context of the twentieth century philosophy, martin Heidegger and Herbert marcuse are the most influential philosophers who studied on the negative aspects of technology. Heidegger portrayed the destructive effects of scientific reasoning and technology on the Western culture through the criticism of the traditional Western metaphysics on a phenomenological-ontological level. marcuse, belonging to the tradition of Western marxism, formed his critique of technology in the context of the concept of instrumental rationality and the critique of advanced industrial society and capitalism. Although the starting points of their perspectives on technology and the underlying purposes of their critiques of technology were different, it may be asserted that both have a rather negative and almost entirely pessimistic disposition towards technology. Heidegger’s and marcuse’s criticisms of technology will be discussed in this context and the differences and similarities between these criticisms will be shown. Finally, the paper will emphasise the question of the possibility of a positive role of technology. Promoting the use of non-lethal sample collection for analysing the trophic relationships of inshore flatfish populations using stable isotope analysis

    Get PDF
Trophic studies on inshore flatfish populations usually rely on stomach content analyses and/or stable isotope analysis (SIA) of dorsal white muscle that involves the collection of samples from euthanised fishes. To promote the use of non-lethal sampling methods in inshore flatfish populations of relatively high intrinsic angling and/or ecological value, the applicability of using fin tissue and/or epidermal mucus as non-lethal alternatives to muscle in SIA studies was assessed for European flounder Platichthys flesus, plaice Pleuronectes platessa and common sole Solea solea. In all species, the results indicated that there were significant differences in the ÎŽ13C and ÎŽ15N values of dorsal muscle versus their fin and mucus samples. These significant differences were, however, predictable by linear regression, with regression coefficients produced for converting fin and mucus SI values to the equivalent muscle SI values. The use of combined data across the species also provided regression coefficients for converting fin and mucus SI to equivalent muscle values for flatfish populations more generally. These results indicated that there are tissue alternatives to dorsal muscle that can be applied to the SIA of flatfish populations, with these tissues able to be collected using non-lethal sampling methods

The prevalence of hypertension and influencing factors among the employees of a university hospital

    Get PDF
Background: Hypertension is a serious disease with increasing worldwide prevalence, leading to life-threatening complications. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in a university hospital. The Occupational Health and Safety Unit data concerning the health examinations of employees were used to determine the prevalence of hypertension in a university hospital and to define the relationship between hypertension and sociodemographic and occupational parameters. Logistic regression analyses were performed for the variables having a significant association with high blood pressure. Results: The data generated during the periodic examination of 3,480 (92%) of all employees (3,780) were analyzed. The prevalence of hypertension was 14.8%. The prevalence of hypertension was found to be 13.5%, 13.9%, and 23.7% among physicians, non-physician healthcare personnel and officers respectively. The logistic regression model revealed a statistically significant correlation between hypertension and male gender, age and BMI. Conclusion: The prevalence of hypertension was highest among staff members. Special programs would facilitate the diagnosis, control, and prevention of high blood pressure among the high-risk groups, especially men, the elderly and the obese hospital employees

Age and sex-based distribution of lumbar multifidus muscle atrophy and coexistence of disc hernia: an MRI study of 2028 patients

    Get PDF
PURPOSEWe aimed to investigate the prevalence of lumbar multifidus muscle (LMM) atrophy in patients having mechanical low back pain with and without disc hernia.METHODSIn total, 2028 lumbar magnetic resonance imaging scans of low back pain patients (age range, 18–88 years) were re-evaluated retrospectively. LMM atrophy was visually assessed in axial sections of L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels.RESULTSLMM atrophy prevalence at both levels was significantly higher in subjects ≄40 years compared with younger adults (P < 0.001). LMM atrophy was significantly more frequent in women than in men (P < 0.001). Among patients with low back pain without hernia, LMM atrophy was significantly more frequent than normal muscle (n=559 vs. n=392; P < 0.001). Frequency of LMM atrophy in low back pain patients without disc hernia was 13%. Hernia was more frequent in patients with LMM atrophy compared with patients without atrophy (P < 0.001).CONCLUSIONLMM atrophy is more common in women; its prevalence and severity are observed to increase with advancing age, and disc hernia is found more frequently in individuals with LMM atrophy
