    A multimission three-axis stabilized spacecraft flight dynamics ground support system

    The Multimission Three-Axis Stabilized Spacecraft (MTASS) Flight Dynamics Support System (FDSS) has been developed in an effort to minimize the costs of ground support systems. Unlike single-purpose ground support systems, which attempt to reduce costs by reusing software specifically developed for previous missions, the multimission support system is an intermediate step in the progression to a fully generalized mission support system in which numerous missions may be served by one general system. The benefits of multimission attitude ground support systems extend not only to the software design and coding process, but to the entire system environment, from specification through testing, simulation, operations, and maintenance. This paper reports the application of an MTASS FDSS to multiple scientific satellite missions. The satellites are the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), and the Solar Anomalous Magnetospheric Particle Explorer (SAMPEX). Both UARS and EUVE use the multimission modular spacecraft (MMS) concept. SAMPEX is part of the Small Explorer (SMEX) series and uses a much simpler set of attitude sensors.     Comparison of two on-orbit attitude sensor alignment methods

    Compared here are two methods of on-orbit alignment of vector attitude sensors. The first method uses the angular difference between simultaneous measurements from two or more sensors. These angles are compared to the angular differences between the respective reference positions of the sensed objects. The alignments of the sensors are adjusted to minimize the difference between the two sets of angles. In the second method, the sensor alignment is part of a state vector that includes the attitude. The alignments are adjusted along with the attitude to minimize all observation residuals. It is shown that the latter method can result in much less alignment uncertainty when gyroscopes are used for attitude propagation during the alignment estimation. The additional information for this increased accuracy comes from knowledge of relative attitude obtained from the spacecraft gyroscopes. The theoretical calculations of this difference in accuracy are presented. Also presented are numerical estimates of the alignment uncertainties of the fixed-head star trackers on the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer spacecraft using both methods

    An Efficient and Accurate Car-Parrinello-like Approach to Born-Oppenheimer Molecular Dynamics

    We present a new method which combines Car-Parrinello and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics in order to accelerate density functional theory based ab-initio simulations. Depending on the system a gain in efficiency of one to two orders of magnitude has been observed, which allows ab-initio molecular dynamics of much larger time and length scales than previously thought feasible. It will be demonstrated that the dynamics is correctly reproduced and that high accuracy can be maintained throughout for systems ranging from insulators to semiconductors and even to metals in condensed phases.     Accuracy study of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) definitive attitude determination

    The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) has two definitive attitude determination requirements: the definitive attitude of the Modular Attitude Control Subsystem (MACS) and the definitive attitude of the gimbaled Solar-Stellar Pointing Platform (SSPP). The onboard computer (OBC) will compute the MACS attitude using a Kalman filter and will transform this attitude solution through the SSPP gimbals to calculate the SSPP attitude. The attitude ground support system (AGSS) will compute the MACS attitude using a batch least-squares differential corrector algorithm and will also transform this solution through the gimbals to obtain the SSPP attitude. This paper reports the results of a prelaunch study to predict the accuracy of the OBC attitude solutions and the accuracy of the AGSS attitude solutions. The OBC and AGSS solution accuracies are then compared to establish the relative quality. The effects of star observability, sensor noise, and sensor misalignment uncertainties on attitude determination accuracy are analyzed for each case
