    Analyzing Pre-school Education Parents’ Problem Solving Skills with Regard to Biological and Gender Characteristics

    AbstractProblem solving is the act of giving a decision about a problem. The act of giving a decision is used at the stages of indivi dual's realizing the problem, gathering information, determining alternatives, testing the most appropriate alternative and evaluat ing the results. Bem stated that in problem solving and being able to cope with problems social gender is a major factor. In this study; gender characteristics and problem solving skills of the mothers and fathers of the children who are having preschool education have been analyzed. Furthermore, whether these fathers’ and mothers’ problem solving skills differentiate or not with regard to biological gender and social gender have been analyzed. Working group of the study; 248 parents whose children are having preschool education. According to the findings of the study, there is no significant difference on parents’ perceptions related to their problem solving skills with regard to their biological gender. However their perceptions related to their problem solving skills differentiate at significant level with regard to their social gender roles

    A retrospective comparison of dental treatment under general anesthesia on children with and without mental disabilities

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the properties of the dental procedures performed on children with dental problems under general anesthesia and compared between the patterns of dental  treatment provided for intellectual disability and non.cooperate healthy child.Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, the records of patients between the ages of 4 and 18 who were treated under general anesthesia were evaluated. Patients were divided into two groups: Those with  intellectual disability and healthy patients who had difficulty cooperating. A statistical analysis of the mean standard deviation was conducted with a focus on two factors: Age and dental treatment methods.Results: In this study, it was observed that restorative treatment and tooth extraction was generally higher in intellectual disability children than in their healthy children. When evaluating the health status of teeth, the value of decayed missing and filled teeth (dmf.t) was observed to be close in healthy and intellectual disability individuals in the 4.6 age groups; it was higher in individuals with intellectual disability in the 7.12 age groups.  There was no significant difference in terms of periodontal treatment and fissure sealants in the 12.18 age groups.Conclusions: By comparing the different patient groups who received dental treatment under general anesthesia, both the number of teeth extracted and DMF.T indices were higher in the disabled group. Therefore, especially more efforts should be made at encouraging these patients to visit the dentist earlier and receive primary preventive care.Key words: Dental treatment, general anesthesia, intellectual disability, oral healt

    A retrospective evaluation of traumatic dental injury in children who applied to the dental hospital, Turkey

    Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze traumatic dental injuries in children visiting the dental hospital emergency department in Samsun of Turkey, in the period from 2007 to 2011.Materials and Methods: Data of age, gender, causes of dental trauma, injured teeth, type of dental injuries, the application period, the dental treatments, and traumatic dental injuries according to the seasons were obtained from the records at dental hospital.Results: Of all 320 patients with traumatic dental injury, 205 were boys and 115 were girls with a boys/girls ratio 1.78:1. Traumatic dental injury was observed more frequently in the 7.12 age groups: 52.5% in girls and 67.8% in boys. Falls are the major cause of traumatic dental injury in the age group 6.12 (51.4%). Sport activities are a common cause of traumatic dental injury in the 7.12 age group (34.2%). Patients visited a dentist within approximately 2 h (57.1%). The upper anterior teeth were subjected to trauma more frequently than the lower anterior teeth. The maxillary central incisors were the most commonly affected teeth, and the  mandibular canins were the least affected teeth. In primary teeth, avulsion was the most common type of dental injury (23%); on the other hand, enamel fractures were the most common type of dental injury (30.6%) observed in permanent teeth. In the primary dentition, the most commonly performed treatments were dental examination and prescribing (70%). The most common treatment choices in permanent teeth were restoration and dental examination (49.7 and 15.8%, respectively).Conclusion: The results of the study show that the emergency intervention to traumatized teeth is important for good prognosis of teeth and oral tissues. Therefore, the parents should be informed about dental trauma in schools, and dental hospital physicians should be subjected to postgraduate training.Key words: Classification, emergency treatment, teeth, traum

    Global alignment of protein-protein interaction networks by graph matching methods

    Aligning protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks of different species has drawn a considerable interest recently. This problem is important to investigate evolutionary conserved pathways or protein complexes across species, and to help in the identification of functional orthologs through the detection of conserved interactions. It is however a difficult combinatorial problem, for which only heuristic methods have been proposed so far. We reformulate the PPI alignment as a graph matching problem, and investigate how state-of-the-art graph matching algorithms can be used for that purpose. We differentiate between two alignment problems, depending on whether strict constraints on protein matches are given, based on sequence similarity, or whether the goal is instead to find an optimal compromise between sequence similarity and interaction conservation in the alignment. We propose new methods for both cases, and assess their performance on the alignment of the yeast and fly PPI networks. The new methods consistently outperform state-of-the-art algorithms, retrieving in particular 78% more conserved interactions than IsoRank for a given level of sequence similarity.     Divergent Directionality of Immune Cell-Specific Protein Expression between Bipolar Lithium Responders and Non-Responders Revealed by Enhanced Flow Cytometry

    Background and Objectives: There is no biomarker to predict lithium response. This study used CellPrintℱ enhanced flow cytometry to study 28 proteins representing a spectrum of cellular pathways in monocytes and CD4+ lymphocytes before and after lithium treatment in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). Materials and Methods: Symptomatic patients with BD type I or II received lithium (serum level ≄ 0.6 mEq/L) for 16 weeks. Patients were assessed with standard rating scales and divided into two groups, responders (≄50% improvement from baseline) and non-responders. Twenty-eight intracellular proteins in CD4+ lymphocytes and monocytes were analyzed with CellPrintℱ, an enhanced flow cytometry procedure. Data were analyzed for differences in protein expression levels. Results: The intent-to-treat sample included 13 lithium-responders (12 blood samples before treatment and 9 after treatment) and 11 lithium-non-responders (11 blood samples before treatment and 4 after treatment). No significant differences in expression between the groups was observed prior to lithium treatment. After treatment, the majority of analytes increased expression in responders and decreased expression in non-responders. Significant increases were seen for PDEB4 and NR3C1 in responders. A significant decrease was seen for NR3C1 in non-responders. Conclusions: Lithium induced divergent directionality of protein expression depending on the whether the patient was a responder or non-responder, elucidating molecular characteristics of lithium responsiveness. A subsequent study with a larger sample size is warranted

    ELF3 is an antagonist of oncogenic-signalling-induced expression of EMT-TF ZEB1

    Background: Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a key step in the transformation of epithelial cells into migratory and invasive tumour cells. Intricate positive and negative regulatory processes regulate EMT. Many oncogenic signalling pathways can induce EMT, but the specific mechanisms of how this occurs, and how this process is controlled are not fully understood. Methods: RNA-Seq analysis, computational analysis of protein networks and large-scale cancer genomics datasets were used to identify ELF3 as a negative regulator of the expression of EMT markers. Western blotting coupled to siRNA as well as analysis of tumour/normal colorectal cancer panels was used to investigate the expression and function of ELF3. Results: RNA-Seq analysis of colorectal cancer cells expressing mutant and wild-type ÎČ-catenin and analysis of colorectal cancer cells expressing inducible mutant RAS showed that ELF3 expression is reduced in response to oncogenic signalling and antagonizes Wnt and RAS oncogenic signalling pathways. Analysis of gene-expression patterns across The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and protein localization in colorectal cancer tumour panels showed that ELF3 expression is anti-correlated with ÎČ-catenin and markers of EMT and correlates with better clinical prognosis. Conclusions: ELF3 is a negative regulator of the EMT transcription factor (EMT-TF) ZEB1 through its function as an antagonist of oncogenic signalling
