The article is focused on the phenomenon of the early Ukrainian decadent cinema, in particular, in relation to filmings of Volodymyr Vynnychenko’s dramaturgy. One of the brightest examples of ‘film decadence’ in Vynnychenko’s oevre is “The Lie” directed by Vyacheslav Vyskovs’ky in 1918, discovered recently in the film archives. This film displays the principles of ‘ethical symbolism’, ‘dark’ expressionist aesthetics and remains the unique masterpiece of specifically Ukranian film decadence

Revealing of the simplest mechanisms of a structure formation

In this paper, results of investigations of the simplest mechanisms of a structure formation are presented. In frameworks of the suggested model the main attention was focused on such characteristics as wiring of the system, clusters formation, dynamics of the wiring. The idea to take into account an influence of the environment factor is employed in the proposed model. Investigations of systems with such principle of a structure formation reveal that the system's dynamics has typical features of self-organized criticality phenomenon. In the avalanche-like processes, which occur in the wiring dynamics, a power law was found with the index close to 1.4. It is independent on the environment factor (which in a sense can be considered as system parameter). The system wiring is approximated pretty well by the Gaussian distribution. The size of the system does not play any role in the dynamics of the model.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to EPJ

When Affirmative Action Is White: Italian Americans in the City University of New York, 1976 – Present

    Get PDF
In 1976, the City University of New York (CUNY) unprecedentedly included Italian Americans in its affirmative action policy, providing them with the status of a designated minority. At the moment, CUNY is the only place where Italian Americans have gained such privileges alongside federally recognized racial and ethnic groups. This historically unique decision has significantly influenced the Italian American community in New York. Yet the question remains: have they made satisfactory progress as a group? Tracing the dynamics in their relations with CUNY authorities, today one can detect a high level of dissatisfaction among Italian American faculty. Additionally, it is not entirely clear how Italian Americans obtained the privileges of affirmative action, or why they needed this protection at the first place. This study traces the reasons for Italian Americans’ inclusion into CUNY’s affirmative action program. It also describes the development of Italian Americans’ relations with the authorities of CUNY, as well as connections of the Italian American faculty members with New York politicians. There is an additional need to investigate the employment discrimination case Scelsa v. CUNY (1994) that played an important role for the Italian American community in New York. Finally, the case of Italian Americans at CUNY should be considered in the context of recent events that illuminate the attempts of particular white ethnic groups – namely, Hasidic Jews and Arabs – to become a part of privileged local and federal programs

The repression of cell growth as a response to starvation leads the bacterial culture to enter stationary growth phase. The cell needs to conserve the energy to survive the starvation. As a result, the metabolic processes of the cell slow down. The ribosome is one of the most energy-consuming organelles, as its main function is to carry out the protein synthesis. The ribosomal proteins have a profound effect on the correct functioning and assembly of the ribosome. To determine whether or not the ribosomal proteins of Escherichia coli are synthesised during stationary growth phase, the changes in the protein quantities over 14 days after the beginning of the growth were calculated. 24 out of 54 ribosomal proteins were found to be synthesised during stationary growth phase. Many of these proteins were found to have a positive effect on the cell during stationary growth phase, such as maintenance of the ribosome structural integrity, for instance, via protein exchange, and self-downregulation of the ribosomal protein synthesis. In estonian: Rakkude kasvu aeglustumisel stressitingimustel siseneb rakukultuuri statsionaarsesse kasvufaasi. Selle tulemusena aeglustub rakkude metabolism ning väheneb nende energiakasutus. Ribosoomid on ühed suurimatest energiatarbijatest rakkudes, viies läbi valkude sünteesi ehk translatsiooni. Ribosoomivalgud osalevad ribosoomi tertsiaalstruktuuri korrektses moodustumises ja funktsionaalsuse tagamises. Selleks, et detekteerida Escherichia coli ribosoomivalkude sünteesi statsionaarse kasvufaasi käigus, kasvatati rakke 14 päeva ning mõõdeti valkude koguse muutust rakukultuuris. Tulemused näitasid, et 24 r-valku 54st sünteesiti rakkudes statsionaarse kasvufaasi käigus. Sünteesitud r-valgud võivad omada positiivset efekti rakkudele, alustades ribosoomivalkude sünteesi repressiooniga ning lõpetades olemasolevate ribosoomide struktuuri terviklikkuse hoidmisega, läbi r-valkude vahetuse

A Comparison of Profiles and Expenditures between Volunteer and Leisure Tourists for the New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area

This research compared the expenditure patterns, profiles, and trip characteristics of volunteer and leisure tourists in New Orleans. Survey research methods were used to obtain a sample of voluntourists that was compared to a leisure tourist sample obtained from secondary data. Visitors’ expenditures across six types of spending, demographics, and travel information were collected. Data analysis included eight t-tests that revealed that voluntourists’ spending was lower in five out of six categories, total daily expenditures, and total trip spending. Voluntourists spent more on local transportation but preferred cheaper accommodations and dining, seldom gambled, shopped little at the destination, and rarely visited tourist attractions. Frequency analysis used to profile tourists discovered that voluntourists traveled greater distances to the destination than leisure tourists and came from northern states. While most leisure tourists were aged between 35-64 years, married, and neither students nor retired, most voluntourists were younger, single, and still in college

Stimuli-Responsive Janus Particles: Design and Investigation of their Self-Assembly in Bulk and at Interfaces

Janus particles, named after the two faced Roman god Janus, possess unique asymmetry and combine two distinct functions at their opposite sides, allowing them to target complex self-assembled architectures and materials inaccessible for homogeneous building blocks. In this study, three areas regarding the topic of Janus particles were explored: the synthesis of Janus particles, their (self-) assembly, and applications. In the first part of the work, we have drawn our attention to the optimization of the synthetic procedures concerning the preparation of Janus particles and to the extending of the current Janus particle library by adding new geometries to the list. In the case of spherical Janus particles, we have developed an easy approach to tailor the Janus ratio of the resulting particles, thus, extending the possibilities of the Pickering emulsion approach for the creation of a variety of Janus particle architectures. Additionally, a new methodology was employed to measure directly and in situ the position/contact angle of the prepared Janus particles with different Janus ratios at a water-oil interface. It was further concluded that having simply two different functionalities on a particle surface does not necessarily imply amphiphilic behavior: only in the case of large wettability contrasts our particles were in a true Janus regime. In the case of platelet-like Janus particles, we have developed a completely new approach for their large-scale synthesis, which involved a reduced number of steps compared to the spherical Janus particles. In the second part of the work, the assembly behavior of various kinds of functional spherical Janus particles was investigated depending on the nature of the Janus particles and the surrounding media conditions. Oppositely charged, uncharged amphiphilic, and charged amphiphilic Janus particles were fabricated comprising different responsive polymers on their surface, and their assembly was investigated depending on the pH value of the dispersion, the ionic strength, or the solvent. It was found that, under specific conditions, the Janus particles formed hierarchical chain-like structures in solutions, which were not observed in the case of the homogeneous particle mixtures. The obtained results indicate that the fundamental understanding of the Janus particle assembly mechanisms is crucial for the programmed formation of desired structures. In the third part of the work, we have focused on the applications of our developed hybrid hairy Janus particles and proposed two main directions that would benefit from the unique properties or architecture of the Janus particles. The first direction is based on the exploitation of the superior interfacial activity of the Janus particles and their use for interfacial catalysis. The second proposed direction for the application of Janus particles is based on their use as building blocks for functional structured surfaces. The prepared surfaces were thoroughly characterized and tested for their performance toward anti-icing as well as anti-fouling applications. Ultimately, the developed functional surfaces based on Janus particles as building blocks are very promising for their future application in the coating technology
