GIANT CYSTIC HYGROMA COLLI IN AN ADULT- A RARE CASE REPORT

    Get PDF
Cystic hygroma (lymphangioma) is often a benign congenital malformation of the lymphatic system that occurs as a result of sequestration or obstruction of lymphatic vessels. Theselesions are usually discovered in infant or children younger than two years of age.Occurrence in adults is uncommon, and fewer than 100 cases of adult lymphangioma have been reported in the literature (1,2) . The objectives of this case report are to present theclinical history and surgical findings, review of literature and the unique problems encountered in the surgical management of this particular patient

A rare case of solitary toxic nodule in a 3yr old female child – a case report

A three year old hyperactive female child presented with a midline neck swelling of one year duration. Clinical examination revealed a nodule in the isthmus of thyroid. Her Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) was suppressed and Free T3 and Free T4 levels were elevated. Radionuclide scintigraphy showed a hyperfunctioning nodule in the isthmus of thyroid. Patient was administered antithyroid medication and brought toeuthyroid state. Isthmectomy was done. Post-operative period was uneventful. Patient was discharged on third post-operative day and is on regular follow up.

iSchools and Social Identity ??? A Social Network Analysis

    Get PDF
We analyze the publication co-authorship network of an iSchool faculty community using ???Social Identity Theory??? as the theoretical lens. Initially, we discuss the need for a theoretical framework to analyze and interpret social network data. Then, we find out the patterns in the levels of interaction happening within the faculty community at an inter-group level. We grouped faculty members into different clusters according to several parameters such as their educational backgrounds, affiliations with research centers/labs, and h-indices. We based our analysis on this classification and we try to understand the relationship among social identity, group affiliation and academic collaborations. We conclude with the remarks that one could avoid idiosyncratic ways of interpreting social network data by using a proven theoretical lens like ???Social Identity Theory??

Large-scale Synthesis and Functional Elements for the Antimicrobial Activity of Defensins

Human neutrophil defensins, and their analogues incorporating anionic, hydrophobic or cationic residues at the N- and C-termini, were synthesized by solid-phase procedures. The synthetic defensins were examined for their microbicidal activity against Candida albicans, two Gram-negative bacteria (Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis) and two Gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus mutans). The human neutrophil peptide 1 (HNP1) and HNP2 were found to be potent candidacidal agents. HNP3, which differs by one amino acid at the N-terminus of its sequence, was totally inactive. The Gram-negative bacteria A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis and the Gram-positive bacteria S. gordonii and S. mutans were insensitive to human defensins. However, the insertion of two basic residues, such as arginine, at both the N-terminus and the C-terminus of HNP2 significantly enhanced antifungal and antibacterial activity. The addition of anionic residues, such as aspartic acid, at the N- and C-termini rendered the molecule totally inactive. The presence of two hydrophobic amino acids, such as valine, at the N-terminus of HNP2 and of two basic arginine residues at its C-terminus resulted in molecules that were optimally active against these oral pathogens. The results suggest that the N- and C-terminal residues in defensin peptides are the crucial functional elements that determine their microbicidal potency. The three-dimensional structure of all defensins constitutes the same amphiphilic beta-sheet structure, with the polar face formed by the N- and C-terminal residues playing an important role in defining microbicidal potency and the antimicrobial spectrum. The enhanced microbicidal activity observed for defensin peptides with two basic residues at both the N- and C-termini could be due to optimization of the amphiphilicity of the structure, which could facilitate specific interactions with the microbial membranes

Analysis and Forecasting of Seasonal Changes in Cash Prices for Corn, Wheat, and Oats Grown in South Dakota

    Get PDF
The overall objective of this study is to identify the seasonal patterns in S.D. cash prices (received by farmers) for corn, wheat, and oats. Seasonality in S.D. cash prices may be different from the seasonality in the U.S. cash prices for a commodity. The reasons for this may be differences in the seasonal supply and demand for the commodity and the supply and demand for substitutes. The availability and price of storage and transportation can also have substantial impact on regional commodity price seasonality. Therefore, it is important that the relationship between the seasonal fluctuations in S.D. cash prices and the seasonal fluctuations in the U.S. cash prices be analyzed. Since the seasonal indexes are computed using historical data, it is important to investigate the impact of the length of the historical data series on the reliability of the seasonal indexes. For each of the selected grains, corn, wheat, and oats, the specific objectives are as follows: 1) To identify the seasonal patterns in S.D. and U.S. cash prices. 2) To investigate if the seasonal patterns in S.D. cash prices are different than the seasonal patterns in the U.S. cash prices. 3) To investigate if the seasonal pattern in S.D. and U.S. cash prices are changing over time. 4) To analyze the impact of the length of the historical data series on the reliability of the forecasted price patterns
