Making Time

This article adopts a point of view of practice theories and elucidates how temporal orientations commence in the interactions of humans and the material world. Empirically the article focuses on the contemporary practices of wooden boating. Such practices offer a variety of different temporal orientations, which include emancipatory uchronias, flow states, altruistic care of common heritage and craft identities of mastering traditional skills. These positions within wooden boating result out of a distinct historic development. The practices of wooden boating also frequently imply stress and heavy toll on time, and entail subtle negotiations between self-determination and duties as a practitioner

Valuing energy solutions in the housing markets : the role of market devices and real estate agents

Due to the long service life of such technologies, market valuation impacts on the feasibility of such investments. Yet, existing evidence on the market valuation of energy investments in private housing is inconclusive. Furthermore, despite significant policy efforts, energy performance certificates remain ineffective. This paper addresses these gaps with a study of real estate agents and the use of market devices, such as tools, databases, classification schemes, inspection protocols and market practices. Our analytical framework builds on the sociology of markets, actor network theory and pragmatist theories of valuation in order to highlight the material and discursive assemblages and arrangements that intervene in the construction of markets. Drawing on empirical evidence from Finland, the results point to asymmetries in market devices and valuation practices that disfavour energy investments compared to the other key quality attributes of housing.Peer reviewe

Object relations in accounts of everyday life

Theories of social practice routinely acknowledge the significance of the material world, arguing that objects have a constitutive role in shaping and reproducing the practices of which daily life is made. Objects are also important for those who approach ‘everyday life’ as an ontology, a tradition in which scholarly interest in the material reaches beyond the somewhat pragmatic concerns of practice theory. In this article we identify traces of both schools of thought in the ways in which people describe their immediate material environments. By drawing on an archive of diary material, we illustrate multi-faceted object relations with reference to the example of keeping warm. We conclude that in keeping warm, diarists weave together encounters, tactics and judgements, encountering objects in ways that extend beyond the ‘mere’ enactment of social practice. In analysing these encounters we explore ways of conceptualising the object-world that are especially relevant for studies of everyday life

Pulmonaalne hüpertensioon (PH) on kardiopulmonaalsüsteemi haigusseisund, mida iseloomustab vererõhu kõrgenemine kopsuarteris ja kopsuringe vaskulaarse resistentsuse tõus, mis viivad südame parema vatsakese puudulikkuse tekkeni. Üks haruldane PH põhjus on pulmonaalne kapillaarne hemangiomatoos (PCH), millele on iseloomulik kapil laaride vohamine läbi kopsu alveoolide seinte ja interstiitsiumi, põhjustades sekundaarselt ka veresoonte kahjustuse ja PH tekke. Every year new software systems are developed ranging from small programs to large enterprise systems. The requirements of these systems have a tendency to change over time, which requires changes to be made. Making changes to a system according to changed requirements is part of software maintenance. The costs of software maintenance can be between 40-70\% of a system's costs during its life-cycle. Systems with high maintainability need less maintenance effort, which means lower maintenance costs. This thesis studies different aspects of software maintainability, with the purpose of redesigning Sapphire Build's data import feature. Sapphire Build is an Enterprise Management Suite developed by Kova Solutions, Inc. A proof-of-concept prototype is implemented based on the design. The prototype is evaluated based on the design's requirements and how well it can handle future changes. The evaluation results indicate that the maintainability of a system depends both on its design and how it is implemented. Design documents provide important guidelines for developers but might not cover all the necessary details needed to implement it as planned. The results suggest that following the SOLID principles can greatly improve maintainability when developing software using an object-oriented approach.Nya mjukvaru system utvecklas årligen, varierande från små program till stora affärssystem. Dessa systems krav har en tendens att förändras över tiden, vilket innebär ett behov att göra förändringar i systemen. Mjukvaru systems kostnader under dess livstid kan till 40-70\% bestå av underhålls kostnader. System med hög underhållbarhet kräver mindre anstränging vid underhålls arbeten, vilket minskar underhålls kostnaderna. Denna avhandling studerar mjukvaras olika underhållbarhets aspekter. Målet är att omforma Sapphire Builds data importerings egenskap. Sapphire Build är ett affärssystem utvecklad av Kova Solutions Inc. En prototyp utvecklas på basis av omformnings designen för att bevisa omformningens duglighet. Prototypen evalueras på basis av design kraven. Dessutom evalueras prototypen på basis av hur bra den kan hantera framtida förändringar. Resultaten indikerar att underhållbarheten av ett system beror både på dess design och hur den är implementerad. Design dokument förser utvecklaren med viktiga riktlinjer, men täcker nödvändigtvis inte alla detaljer som behövs för implementering. Resultaten föreslår att mjukvaras underhållbarhet kan förbättras markant genom att följa SOLID principerna, när mjukvara utvecklas på ett objekt orienterad sätt
