On the sustainability of the Spanish public budget performance

In this paper, we address the issue of whether the current fiscal policy in Spain is sustainable. For this purpose we apply traditional empirical tests of fiscal sustainability proposed in the literature and, in addition, we introduce a deeper univariate analysis of the series involved. Our results show that a structural break seems to have taken place gradually in the Spanish budget performance, allowing to verifying the intertemporal borrowing constraint in a «strong sense», which means that no problems in marketing public debt are expected to arise if fiscal variables follow the pattern of the past in the future. The Topographical Structure of Presocratic Thought

Desde principios del siglo XX, muchos autores han intentado relacionar el origen del pensamiento griego con las transformaciones sociales o políticas que se produjeron con la irrupción de la polis antigua. Cornford veía una proyección de la estructura del comportamiento social, Jaeger, una analogía, y Vernant, una analogía de estructura del proceso de geometrización del espacio urbano. En este artículo, abordaré los problemas de analizar esta relación bajo el concepto de analogía, y propondré un enfoque alternativo basado en la distinción entre los conceptos de espacio y lugar defendida por el filósofo australiano Jeff Malpas. Mi propuesta se complementa con algunos aspectos relacionados con la antropología comparada de Marcel Detienne, y se traduce en una metodología de investigación que propone abordar el problema del inicio de la sabiduría a través del concepto de matrices de pensamiento.Since the beginning of the twenty century, many scholars have tried to find a link between the origins of Greek thought and the political and social transformations that took place with the emergence of ancient cities. Cornford interpreted this relationship as a projection of the structure and behaviour of human society, Jaeger, as analogy, and Vernant, as a «analogie de structure» with the geometrization of urbane space. In this paper, I will deal with the problem of analysing this relationship under the analogy concept, and I will propose a new approach based on the distintion between the space and place concepts proposed by the Australian philosopher Jeff Malpas. My research proposal is complemented with some aspects related to the Comparative Anthropology and the Detienne’s ideas. The economic effects of exogenous fiscal shocks in Spain: a SVAR approach

This paper estimates the effects of exogenous fiscal policy shocks in Spain in a VAR framework. Government expenditure expansionary shocks are found to have positive effects on output in the short-term at the cost of higher inflation and public deficits and lower output in the medium and long term. Tax increases are found to drag economic activity in the medium term while entailing an only temporary improvement of the public budget balance. The application of these results to the analysis of fiscal policy in Spain since the mid-nineties points to the conclusion that the consolidation process does not seem to have involved costs in terms of output growth. Moreover, the stance of fiscal policy has become more counter-cyclical in that period. JEL Classification: E62, H30Fiscal multipliers, Fiscal shocks, VAR

First record of Selene dorsalis (Gill; 1862) (Osteichthyes: Carangidae) in the Canary Islands (Central-east Atlantic)

We report the capture of a specimen of Selene dorsalis (Gill; 1862); a rare species in waters north of the Cape Verde Islands and Senegal.
