Some cost problems in the Hawaiian sugar industry

It is not the intention of this article to present a complete cost system, nor to give a detailed description of the various cost accounts which are used in the Hawaiian sugar industry, but rather to outline some of the many and varied problems of the industry which exercise a direct influence upon the cost accounting procedure. It will be found, for example, that the human factor has a much more important influence on costs and cost procedure than is generally the case in other industries, because the laborer and his family are practically wards of the employer, and their care is one of his chief problems and one of the important items in his costs

BaFe2As2/Fe bilayers with [001]-tilt grain boundary on MgO and SrTiO3 bicrystal substrates

Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) can be realized on both MgO and SrTiO3 bicrystal substrates with [001]-tilt grain boundary by employing Fe buffer layers. However, an additional spinel (i.e. MgAl2O4) buffer between Fe and SrTiO3 is necessary since an epitaxial, smooth surface of Fe layer can not be grown on bare SrTiO3. Sustained leraning - but how? Learning experiences of students

Funktionelle Bedeutung genetischer Polymorphismen

Mittels Real-time PCR, Immunhistochemie und PCR/RFLP wurde in 82 nephrektomierten Nierenzellkarzinompatienten untersucht, wie die beiden Membrantransporter ABCB1 und ABCC2 sowohl im normalen, wie auch tumorösen Nierengewebe exprimiert sind, ob genetische Varianten deren Expression beeinflussen und ob diese dadurch Risikofaktoren für die Entstehung des Nierenzellkarzinoms darstellen. ABCB1 und ABCC2 zeigten im Tumorgewebe auf mRNA- und auf Proteinebene eine niedrigere Expression als im gesunden Nierengewebe. ABCB1 war dabei signifikant niedriger in klarzelligen als in nicht-klarzelligen Karzinomen exprimiert. Im normalen Nierengewebe wiesen die genetischen Varianten 2677G>T/A und 3435C>T signifikant höhere ABCB1-mRNA-Expressionen auf als die homozygoten Wildtyp-Allelträger. Die ABCC2-mRNA-Expression war im normalen Nierengewebe bei homozygoten -24C-Allelträgern signifikant höher als bei den -24T-Allelträgern. Darüber hinaus erwies sich keiner der untersuchten Polymorphismus als Risikofaktor für das Nierenzellkarzinom. Im Reporter-Gen-Assay wies das -24C-Allel gegenüber dem T-Allel eine signifikant höhere Luciferase-Aktivität auf, welche aber nicht durch unterschiedliche DNA-Protein-Interaktionen im Elektrophoretic Mobility Shift Assays zu erklären waren. In in silico-Untersuchungen beeinflusste -24C>T die ABCC2-mRNA-Sekundärstruktur nicht. Mit dieser Arbeit konnte gezeigt werden, dass die untersuchten ABCB1- und ABCC2-Polymorphismen zwar keine Risikofaktoren für die Entstehung des Nierenzellkarzinoms darstellen, dass sie aber die Expression im normalen Nierengewebe beeinflussen und damit bei der Ausscheidung insbesondere renal eliminierter Stoffe eine Rolle spielen könnten

Musical Drama in Monteverdi\u27s L\u27Orfeo: How Aria, Recitative, and Ritornello Shape Drama

Composers of early operas faced the unique challenge of using their music as a dramatic form of entertainment. This idea of drama linked with music was relatively new, so these composers had to develop entirely original concepts. One such composer was Claudio Monteverdi, who built the foundation of modern opera’s three main musical forms: aria, recitative, and ritornello. An early example of the dramatic use of these musical forms can be seen in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo. Scaling behaviour of the critical current in clean epitaxial Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 thin films

The angular-dependent critical current density, Jc(theta), and the upper critical field, Hc2(theta), of epitaxial Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 thin films have been investigated. No Jc(theta) peaks for H || c were observed regardless of temperatures and magnetic fields. In contrast, Jc(theta) showed a broad maximum at theta=90 degree, which arises from intrinsic pinning. All data except at theta=90 degree can be scaled by the Blatter plot. Hc2(theta) near Tc follows the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau expression. The mass anisotropy increased from 1.5 to 2 with increasing temperature, which is an evidence for multi-band superconductivity.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review B rapid communication
