    Web Service Retrieval by Structured Models

    Much of the information available on theWorldWideWeb cannot effectively be found by the help of search engines because the information is dynamically generated on a user’s request.This applies to online decision support services as well as Deep Web information. We present in this paper a retrieval system that uses a variant of structured modeling to describe such information services, and similarity of models for retrieval. The computational complexity of the similarity problem is discussed, and graph algorithms for retrieval on repositories of service descriptions are introduced. We show how bounds for combinatorial optimization problems can provide filter algorithms in a retrieval context. We report about an evaluation of the retrieval system in a classroom experiment and give computational results on a benchmark library.Economics ;

    On Real-time Top k Querying for Mobile Services

    Mobile services offering multi-feature query capabilities must meet tough response time requirements to gain customer acceptance. The top-k query model is a popular candidate to implement such services. Focusing on a central server architecture we present a new algorithm called SR-Combine that closely self-adapts itself to particular cost ratios in such environments. SR-Combine optimizes both the object accesses and the query run-times. We perform a series of synthetical benchmarks to verify the superiority of SR-Combine over existing algorithms. In order to assess whether it can meet the stated response time requirements for mobile access, we propose a psychologically founded model. It turns out that for a wide range of practical cases SR-Combine can satisfy these goals. Where this isn't yet the case, we show up ways how to get there systematically. Thus with SR-Combine a breakthrough in real-time capabilities of top-k querying for mobile services is in sight now

    Fast approximation schemes for Boolean programming and scheduling problems related to positive convex Half-Product

    We address a version of the Half-Product Problem and its restricted variant with a linear knapsack constraint. For these minimization problems of Boolean programming, we focus on the development of fully polynomial-time approximation schemes with running times that depend quadratically on the number of variables. Applications to various single machine scheduling problems are reported: minimizing the total weighted flow time with controllable processing times, minimizing the makespan with controllable release dates, minimizing the total weighted flow time for two models of scheduling with rejection

    Bandwidth Constrained Multi-interface Networks

    International audienceIn heterogeneous networks, devices can communicate by means of multiple wired or wireless interfaces. By switching among interfaces or by combining the available interfaces, each device might establish several connections. A connection is established when the devices at its endpoints share at least one active interface. Each interface is assumed to require an activation cost, and provides a communication bandwidth. In this paper, we consider the problem of activating the cheapest set of interfaces among a network G = (V,E) in order to guarantee a minimum bandwidth B of communication between two specified nodes. Nodes V represent the devices, edges E represent the connections that can be established. In practical cases, a bounded number k of different interfaces among all the devices can be considered. Despite this assumption, the problem turns out to be NP-hard even for small values of k and Δ, where Δ is the maximum degree of the network. In particular, the problem is NP-hard for any fixed k ≥ 2 and Δ ≥ 3, while it is polynomially solvable when k = 1, or Δ ≤ 2 and k = O(1). Moreover, we show that the problem is not approximable within ηlogB or Ω(loglog|V|) for any fixed k ≥ 3, Δ ≥ 3, and for a certain constant η, unless P=NP. We then provide an approximation algorithm with ratio guarantee of b max , where b max is the maximum communication bandwidth allowed among all the available interfaces. Finally, we focus on particular cases by providing complexity results and polynomial algorithms for Δ ≤ 2
