Manx Arrays: Perfect Non-Redundant Interferometric Geometries
Interferometry applications (e.g., radio astronomy) often wish to optimize the placement of
the interferometric elements. One such optimal criterion is a uniform distribution of non-redundant element
spacings (in both distance and position angle). While large systems, with many elements, can rely on saturating
the sample space, and disregard “wasted” sampling, small arrays with only a few elements are more critical,
where a single element can represent a significant fraction of the overall cost. This paper defines a “perfect
array” as a mathematical construct having uniform and complete element spacings within a circle of radius
equal to the maximum element spacing. Additionally, the largest perfect non-redundant array, comprising six
elements, is presented. The geometry is described, along with the properties of the layout and situations where
it would be of significant benefit to array application and non-redundant masking designs
Cavitating Langmuir Turbulence in the Terrestrial Aurora
Langmuir cavitons have been artificially produced in the earth's ionosphere,
but evidence of naturally-occurring cavitation has been elusive. By measuring
and modeling the spectra of electrostatic plasma modes, we show that natural
cavitating, or strong, Langmuir turbulence does occur in the ionosphere, via a
process in which a beam of auroral electrons drives Langmuir waves, which in
turn produce cascading Langmuir and ion-acoustic excitations and cavitating
Langmuir turbulence. The data presented here are the first direct evidence of
cavitating Langmuir turbulence occurring naturally in any space or
astrophysical plasma.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, published in PRL on 9 March 2012

Using radar beam-parks to characterize the Kosmos-1408 fragmentation event
We describe the use of radar beam-park experiments to characterize the space debris resulting from a recent fragmentation event, the deliberate demolition of the defunct Kosmos-1408 satellite. We identify the Kosmos-1408 fragments and present distribution of measurement parameters as well as proxy orbit parameters. We present and apply a novel technique to estimate the size of objects by matching the signal to noise ratio of the detection to the radiation pattern of the radar. With this method we estimate the size distribution of the debris cloud. We also demonstrate how a pair of beam-park observations can be used to perform a crude, yet seemingly reliable, initial orbit determination. Finally, we present followup observations 5 months after the fragmentation that show a still compact cloud of debris
An imaging interferometry capability for the EISCAT Svalbard Radar.
Interferometric imaging (aperture synthesis imaging)
is a technique used by radio astronomers to achieve
angular resolution that far surpasses what is possible with a
single large aperture. A similar technique has been used for
radar imaging studies of equatorial ionospheric phenomena
at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory. We present plans for
adding an interferometric imaging capability to the EISCAT
Svalbard Radar (ESR), a capability which will contribute significantly
to several areas of active research, including naturally
and artificially enhanced ion-acoustic echoes and their
detailed relation in space and time to optical phenomena,
polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSE), and meteor studies.
Interferometry using the two antennas of the ESR has
demonstrated the existence of extremely narrow, fieldaligned
scattering structures, but having only a single baseline
is a severe limitation for such studies. Building additional
IS-class antennas at the ESR is not a trivial task. However,
the very high scattering levels in enhanced ion-acoustic
echoes and PMSE means that a passive receiver antenna of
more modest gain should still be capable of detecting these
echoes.
In this paper we present simulations of what an imaging
interferometer will be capable of observing for different
antenna configurations and brightness distributions, under
ideal conditions, using two different image inversion algorithms.
We also discuss different antenna and receiver technologies
