A Meta-Analysis of Motivational Interviewing Interventions for Pediatric Health Behavior Change

    Get PDF
Motivational interviewing (MI) is an empirically supported intervention that has shown effectiveness in moving people towards positive lifestyle choices. Although originally designed for adult substance users, MI has since expanded to other health concerns with a range of clients age groups. The following meta-analysis analyzed MI's effectiveness in eliciting behavior change in pediatric health domains. Thirty-seven empirical studies were included in this meta-analysis, encompassing eight health domains. The overall effect size (Hedge's g) in this population as compared to both other active treatments and no treatment was 0.282 (95% CI [0.242-0.323]), slightly higher than a "small" effect size, and also slightly higher than what has been typically found in the substance literature. The effectiveness of MI in pediatric domains was moderated by factors such as practitioner background, health domain, and the family member who participated. Effect sizes varied by health condition such that the health domains with the largest overall effect sizes were Type 1 Diabetes, asthma, and calcium intake. MI seems to be most effective when both parent and child participate in sessions and when the cultural background of the practitioner matches the family. Unexpectedly, number of MI sessions and follow-up length were not significant moderators. Overall, these findings indicate that MI is an effective and appropriate intervention for targeting child health behavior changes

The online  tutorials for undergraduatestudents at Universitas Terbuka has 30% of contributions to the grade of the final exam, which is why students are expected not to depend solely on independent learning without any supporting facilities. With 339 undergraduate students of SIPAS NON-TTM PGSD and PGPAUD, the researcher used the unified theories of acceptance and use of technology to analyze students acceptance and technology usage, and using multiple regression as the statistical tools to test out the influence of performace expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions towards the behavioral intention of undergraduate students of PGSD and PGPAUD in using online  tutorials. It was found that facilitating conditions had the most significant influence towards behavioral intention, while performance expectancy was right after. Lower influence was found in social influence, while the effort expectancy doesn't have any significant effect on behavioral intention of undergraduate students of PGSD and PGPAUD in using online  tutroials

Castles of Sand and Steel: The Collision of Growth and Policy with the State’s Advancing Shoreline

There is often a close association between the history, culture and economy of an area with its regional environment. The location of initial settlements in an area, development of commerce, agriculture and industry as well as regional cultural identities often bear a strong imprint of the nature of the landscape and natural resources in which they develop. Reference to the South Carolina coastal zone as The Low Country and The Grand Strand is as likely to stimulate impressions of the region\u27s economic base and culture as to be associated with the nature of the region\u27s landforms and habitats. The increasing shift in population and infrastructure towards the nation\u27s shoreline is challenging coastal resource managers and planners to both support an important economic engine for coastal states and the health of the natural setting that is, in large part, the basis for growth. The progressive intersection of the relative mobile natural shoreline and the largely static, and increasingly massive, coastal infrastructure further complicates coastal management. In addition, as the shoreline migrates so does the boundary between private and public interests which add an additional dimension to beachfront management. There are but two real options to address sea level rise and shoreline erosion available to society; retreat from the moving coastline or defend and hold the shoreline in its present position. South Carolina took a leadership role in the country and enacted an innovative policy of retreat. That policy was based on the need to maintain the public beach as a critical public resource and one of primary importance to sustain the rapid growth and economic development of the coastal zone. It has also undertaken an intermediate policy of using beach renourishment to delay the implementation of the long-term retreat policy. This interim policy has now been at work for two decades. In that time, the amount of infrastructure has grown and the forces driving shoreline change have continued to act. The interim option of beach nourishment may be effective in many sections of the coast for decades to come. In some areas, however, this option will become increasingly less effective and force the difficult task of developing the mechanisms to implement the long-term policy or abandoning the policy and return to the practice of armoring the shore with cement and steel that was proliferating prior to 1985. Either long-term option, retreat from or defend the shoreline, will prove to be costly and difficult to implement. This paper examines the forces driving shoreline change, the options available to address this change, defines the present state policy and considers the prospect of future implantation of the policy.https://digitalcommons.coastal.edu/dtsls/1017/thumbnail.jp

Influence of Best Friends on Children’s Athletic Competence and Physical Activity Engagement: A Longitudinal Analysis

    Get PDF
Pediatric obesity is a significant public health concern, associated with systemic physical health repercussions and impairing social and emotional consequences. Physical activity is an important protective factor against development of obesity, and childhood represents a critical time for forming lifelong physical activity habits. Weight status has been shown in the adult and adolescent literature to move through social systems as a “social contagion”, yet the social systems on development of physical activity and athletic competence in childhood has been less studied, especially within a longitudinal frame. This study aimed to examine the influence of perceived and self-reported best friend factors on child physical activity and athletic competence over a school year. Methods included in-school administration of questionnaires related to athletic competence and perceived best friend athletic competence, as well as objective measurement of physical activity. Findings suggested friends were similar on these constructs at Time 1, but not Time 2. The novel measurement of perceived best friend athletic competence was revealed to be a unique and influential construct. This variable was distinct from both child self-reported athletic competence and best friend self-reported athletic competence, and significantly influenced child engagement in physical activity over time. Implications for this study include the importance of measuring the child’s perception of the best friend when examining dyads in the context of physical activity

Further development of an in vitro model for studying the penetration of chemicals through compromised skin

A new in vitro model based on the electrical resistance properties of the skin barrier has been established in this laboratory. The model utilises a tape stripping procedure in dermatomed pig skin that removes a specific proportion of the stratum corneum, mimicking impaired barrier function observed in humans with damaged skin. The skin penetration and distribution of chemicals with differing physicochemical properties, namely; Benzoic acid, 3-Aminophenol, Caffeine and Sucrose has been assessed in this model. Although, skin penetration over 24 h differed for each chemical, compromising the skin did not alter the shape of the time course profile, although absorption into receptor fluid was higher for each chemical. Systemic exposure (receptor fluid, epidermis and dermis), was marginally higher in compromised skin following exposure to the fast penetrant, Benzoic acid, and the slow penetrant Sucrose. The systemically available dose of 3-Aminophenol increased to a greater extent and the absorption of Caffeine was more than double in compromised skin, suggesting that Molecular Weight and Log Pow, are not the only determinants for assessing systemic exposure under these conditions. Although further investigations are required, this in vitro model may be useful for prediction of dermal route exposure under conditions where skin barrier is impaired

This case study addressed the attitudes and perceptions of faculty and professional advisors at a public comprehensive liberal arts institution. Based on a survey administered to full-time faculty and professional advisors in Fall 2009, the results showed a quantitative difference in levels of satisfaction with advising between the groups. Faculty resported a desire to function more in a mentoring capacity as well as increased recognition for advising during the promotion and tenure process, and identified a systemic need for better communication of policies and procedures. Professional advisors also raised these concerns but reported a higher level of overall satisfaction with advising. Concrete strategies to improve advising delivery were identified. Some preliminary best practices were addressed
