Dracunculus medinensis is a species belonging to the phylum Nematoda and is the only nematode transmitted through drinking water. It inhabits subcutaneous tissue of infected persons and, if not properly treated, can be a serious threat to one's health. The disease caused by this parasite is called dracunculiasis, or ''guinea worm disease'' and it has been known from ancient Egypt and Greece, where the physicians treated it by winding the parasite around a small piece of wood in order to extract it from the infected part of the body. It is believed that the symbol of medicine, Aesculapius, represents this parasite wound around a stick. The goal of this paper is to examine the morphology, anatomy and ecology of this nematode, as well as ways of treatment of infected people. Dracunculiasis today has been contained to four countries – Republic of Sudan, Republic of Mali, Republic of Ghana and FDR Ethiopia. To further contain and cure this disease, the World Health Organization is trying to educate the local population about prevention and treatment of this disease. Their campaign appears to be successful, because the number of infected people has dropped from 3.5 million people in 1986, to only 764 people in 2009. This is very important because, apart from causing ulcers, cellulitis and tissue necrosis, dracunculiasis can also lead to death

Vector Control System Design for Four Degree-of-Freedom Dynamic Flexible Simulation of the Variable-Frequency Drive

In the present work we investigate the control system development of the drive simulators to train driver/operator driving skills, taking into account the ever-changing terrain. In order to meet the required response of the four degree-of-freedom motion platform servomotor current studies have been focused on the vector control of the resistance motor angular velocity from the sensor being incremental encoder. In proposed system the standard security of the frequency converter is realized. It leads to overload capacity of two times within minutes determined by servomotor inertia. Further, we represent the algorithms: positional limitation, reliable acceleration and restraint, frequency break. As well as we demonstrate the position switches implement in software. As a result, the control system commands the control of the angular position of the platform in coordinates

Objectives: The present study aims to investigate the effect of mentally demanding cognitive tasks on rowing performance in prepubertal athletes. Design: Randomised, counterbalanced and crossover. Method: Seventeen rowers, aged between 10 and 12 years, completed three separate testing sessions during which they performed three different cognitive tasks before completing a 1500 m time trial on the rowing ergometer. In the two experimental conditions, one hour of a standard cognitive task (Stroop task) and an arithmetic school test were used to elicit mental effort; in the control condition a time-matched, not demanding activity was carried out (painting). Subjective workload and mood were measured before and after the treatments, and the motivation was recorded before the time-trial. During the time trial, time, power, speed, cadence, heart rate and rate of perceived exertion were assessed. Results: The Stroop task and the arithmetic test were rated more mentally demanding (P < 0.001), effortful (P < 0.001) and frustrating (P = 0.001) than the control task, but the items fatigue (P = 0.437, P = 0.197) and vigour (P = 0.143, P = 1.000) after the cognitive tasks were not significantly different from the control. The performance of the time trial did not differ between conditions (time: P = 0.521; power: P = 0.208; speed: P = 0.341); physiological (P = 0.556) and perceptual (P = 0.864) measures recorded during the physical task were not affected by the conditions. Accordingly, pacing profiles (P = 0.312) and cadence (P = 0.062) did not differ between the conditions. Conclusions: Mentally demanding activities did not affect the subsequent physical performance in prepubertal athletes

Child Sexual Abuse, PTSD, and Substance Use: Predictors of Revictimization in Adult Sexual Assault Survivors

Get PDF
This study examined the unique effects of child sexual abuse simultaneously with post-traumatic stress disorder symptom clusters, problem drinking, and illicit drug use in relation to sexual revictimization in a community sample of female adult sexual assault victims. Participants (N = 555) completed two surveys a year apart. Child sexual abuse predicted more post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in adult sexual assault victims. Posttraumatic stress disorder numbing symptoms directly predicted revictimization, whereas other post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms (reexperiencing, avoidance, and arousal) were related to problem drinking, which in turn predicted revictimization. Thus, numbing symptoms and problem drinking may be independent risk factors for sexual revictimization in adult sexual assault victims, particularly for women with a history of childhood sexual abuse. Fund Performance Evaluation in Greece Revisited: Evidence from the Impact of Operational Attributes

Get PDF
The present study, employing a survivorship-bias free dataset, assesses the performance of Greek domestic equity funds during the period June 2001-December 2009 controlling for the thin trading risk that is inherent in the Greek stock market. Augmenting Carhart’s multi benchmark model (1997) with a stock–level liquidity factor we document the absence of skills among domestic equity fund managers. However, at a fund level, we detect evidence of a statistically and economically significant outperformance that might be related to a conjectured incentive effect. In a second stage analysis, we examine the relationship between fund performance and a series of cost and operational attributes employing the robust quantile regression method. Cross sectional results demonstrate a significant inverse relationship between fund performance and expenses. Moreover, our findings show that the larger the fund the lower the performance
