    Effect of fibre treatments on interfacial shear strength of hemp fibre reinforced polylactide and unsaturated polyester composites

    Surface treatment of hemp fibres was investigated as a means of improving interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of hemp fibre reinforced polylactide (PLA) and unsaturated polyester (UPE) composites. Fibres were treated with sodium hydroxide, acetic anhydride, maleic anhydride and silane. A combined treatment using sodium hydroxide and silane was also carried out. IFSS of PLA/hemp fibre samples increased after treatment, except in the case of maleic anhydride treatment. Increased IFSS could be explained by better bonding of PLA with treated fibres and increased PLA transcrystallinity. The highest IFSS was 11.4 MPa which was obtained for the PLA/alkali treated fibre samples. IFSS of UPE/hemp fibre samples increased for all treated fibres. This is believed to be due to the improvement of chemical bonding between the treated fibres and the UPE as supported by FT-IR results. The highest IFSS (20.3 MPa) was found for the combined sodium hydroxide and silane treatment fibre/UPE samples

    Influence of loading rate, alkali fibre treatment and crystallinity on fracture toughness of random short hemp fibre reinforced polylactide bio-composites

    Plane-strain fracture toughness (KIc) of random short hemp fibre reinforced polylactide (PLA) bio-composites was investigated along with the effect of loading rate, fibre treatment and PLA crystallinity. Fracture toughness testing was carried out at loading rates varying from 0.5 to 20 mm/min using single-edge-notched bending specimens with 0 to 30 wt% fibre. KQ (trial KIc) of composites decreased as loading rate increased, until stabilising to give KIc values at a loading rate of 10 mm/min and higher. The reduction of crazing and stress whitening, as well as a more direct crack path observed in PLA samples combined with reduced plastic deformation observed in composites provided explanation for this reduction. KIc of composites was found to decrease with increased fibre content and fibre treatment with sodium hydroxide. Studies controlling the degree of PLA crystallinity by heat treatment or “annealing” showed that reduction of KIc can be attributed to increased crystallinity

    This chapter examines whether and when the experience of inner speech can be inaccurate and thereby mislead the subject. It presents a view about the representational content of speech experience generally and then applies it to inner speech in particular. On such a view, speech experience typically presents us with far more than simply the low-level acoustic properties of speech: it conveys the relevant mental states of the (actual or hypothetical) speaker. Similarly, inner speech presents inner speakers with their own mental states. In light of this, inner speech can mislead either by presenting the subject with mental states they do not in fact have, or by presenting these mental states as belonging to another agent. The chapter reflects on the sorts of contexts in which either of these could occur

    This article draws on research from the major collaborative research project Hearing the Voice, based at Durham University, to reconsider and foreground Margery Kempe’s inner voices, and hence, to return to an emphasis on inner, spiritual experience as shaping her Book. The richness of Margery’s multi-sensory experience, and the care with which it is depicted, is illuminated by and illuminates the experience of contemporary voice-hearers, offering a powerful alternative perspective to often reductive bio-medical understandings. Contemporary cognitive frameworks, particularly scientific accounts of inner speech, are in turn employed to open out Margery’s inner voices and to offer insights into the psychology of spiritual meditation

    The biologic possibility of regenerating periodontal tissues,especially bone, lost due to chronic inflammatory periodontal disease has fascinated researchers for over 100 years. During the past 15 years, an explosion of new knowledge in the area of periodontal physiology coupled with the application of novel techniques in cellular and molecular biology has shed new light on the biologic possibilities of regenerating periodontal tissues. Along with the breakthroughs, we have generated more challenging questions and controversies. Wound healing in general has been described in the biomedical literature using a timescale compartmentalization (for review, see Clark1). Wound healing in the periodontium may best be considered as unusual combinations of biologic phenomena, typically inconsistent and incompletely understood. This article reviews the current knowledge in the area of wound repair and regeneration of periodontal tissues that have been lost due to chronic inflammatory disease

    Inner speech as language process and cognitive tool.

    Many people report a form of internal language known as inner speech (IS). This review examines recent growth of research interest in the phenomenon, which has broadly supported a theoretical model in which IS is a functional language process that can confer benefits for cognition in a range of domains. A key insight to have emerged in recent years is that IS is an embodied experience characterized by varied subjective qualities, which can be usefully modeled in artificial systems and whose neural signals have the potential to be decoded through advancing brain-computer interface technologies. Challenges for future research include understanding individual differences in IS and mapping form to function across IS subtypes
