Organic-Inorganic Semiconductor Hybrid Systems: Structure, Morphology, and Electronic Properties

    Get PDF
This dissertation addresses the preparation and characterization of hybrid semiconducting systems combining organic with inorganic materials. Characterization methods used included to determine the structure, morphology, and thermal stability comprised X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). One organic-inorganic semiconducting system was pentacene (C22H14) and zinc oxide. This interface was investigated in detail for pentacene on an oxygen-terminated zinc oxide surface, i.e. ZnO(000-1). An extended study on the promising p-n junction was carried out for pentacene on ZnO with different orientations which exhibit different chemical and structural characteristics: ZnO(000-1), ZnO(0001), and ZnO(10-10). Moreover, the organic crystal structure of pentacene was selectively tuned by carefully choosing the substrate temperature. This defined interface with a physisorbed pentacene layer on ZnO was characterized by optical absorption which depends on the temperature of the measured system, the pentacene film thickness, and the molecular orientation and packing. The high quality of the pentacene films allowed in one case to characterize the Davydov splitting by linear polarized light focused on a single crystallite. Another subject in the field of organic-inorganic hybrid materials comprised conjugated dithiols used as self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for immobilizing semiconducting CdS nanoparticles (NPs) on Au substrates. It was demonstrated that an appropriate selection and preparation of the conjugated SAMs is crucial for building up a light-addressable potentiometric sensor with a sufficient efficiency. An optimized electron transfer was achieved with SAMs of long range ordering, high stability, and adequate conductivity. This was examined for different linkers and was best for stilbenedithiol immobilized in solution at higher temperatures. Due to its high current yield and long term stability, the stilbenedithiol-based photosensor was used for peroxide detection incorporating modified CdS NPs with FePt. During this research, current sensing atomic force microscopy (CSAFM) was used to study the electronic behavior of a ZnO crystal. Optimized parameters for reproducible local current-voltage characteristics were determined using a high quality ZnO(10-10) surface as a specimen. It was shown that the desired reproducibility was achieved through the appropriate selection of the parameters such as potential range, sweep delay, and especially duration time of the individual I-V curves. The role of the force load and temperature on electrical conduction was demonstrated for this semiconducting mixed-terminated ZnO surface

    Drone Shadow Tracking

    Get PDF
Aerial videos taken by a drone not too far above the surface may contain the drone's shadow projected on the scene. This deteriorates the aesthetic quality of videos. With the presence of other shadows, shadow removal cannot be directly applied, and the shadow of the drone must be tracked. Tracking a drone's shadow in a video is, however, challenging. The varying size, shape, change of orientation and drone altitude pose difficulties. The shadow can also easily disappear over dark areas. However, a shadow has specific properties that can be leveraged, besides its geometric shape. In this paper, we incorporate knowledge of the shadow's physical properties, in the form of shadow detection masks, into a correlation-based tracking algorithm. We capture a test set of aerial videos taken with different settings and compare our results to those of a state-of-the-art tracking algorithm.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

“The UN-Touchables Humans Rights Discourses and the Challenges of Emancipatory Politics in Lebanese Women\u27s Movements”

This thesis is a process of questioning and understanding. It is also an invitation to begin by tackling social problems in a different way: by asking questions rather than looking at the world as if it is static, where one solution can be the answer. Through this research I try to unpack the complexity of activism under neoliberalism. Moreover I try to problematize the forces of gender governance that via its international institutions constantly attempt to absorb feminist collectives by limiting possibilities to rupture hegemonic narratives of the UN, global legal imaginations that at this moment in history articulate, arbitrate and define justice, assigning ongoing problems of justice to issues of local implementation. This discourse of the UN disregards the social and economic situations that produce the injustices UN legal infrastructures presume to fight against. Thus this thesis is an attempt to push beyond these discourses and unpack the social and economical situations that produce injustices

Paratubal serous borderline tumor in an 85 years old woman: A case report

    Get PDF
Paratubal cysts are incidental, common and benign lesions with few cases of borderline tumor and adenocarcinoma been reported in the literature. Herein, we are discussing a case of an 85 years old woman who visited her Obstetrics and Gynecologist for a chief complaint of post-menopausal bleeding. Physical examination revealed a slightly enlarged uterus. The diagnosis of fibroids were made on ultrasound. A total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed without complications. The gross examination of the specimen was most remarkable for multiple intramural fibroids and a right simple paratubal cyst meausirng 1 × 1 cm. Microscopical evaluation of the paratubal cyst showed a simple cyst lined by stratified cuboidal epithelium with mild cytologic atypia and no stromal invasion, findings consistent with serous borderline tumor rising in a paratubal cyst. Due to the small size of the tumor and its confinement to the cyst, a follow-up was advised. Serous borderline tumors arising in paratubal cyst are very rare with only eight cases reported in the literature. Their existence should be acknowledged to plan patient treatment and outcome

Towards A Post-Traumatic Urban Design That Heals Cities’ Inhabitants Suffering From PTSD

Cities are generally in a state of constant modification. Some experience this modification at a more rapid pace due to the technology available in the city; others experience this modification due to the city’s time of life, which requires many civilizations to imprint their architectural style and project their social image and identity. In certain cases, these modifications are due to natural disasters, such as earthquakes or tsunamis, or man-made wars, or even both. The study revealed that the relationship found between the ability of “Beirutis” (how Beirut’s original inhabitants call themselves) to perceive their identity through the built environment and PTSD, will help urban planners and architects find the procedures based on observation and scientific facts to build with the opportunity to heal disaster-torn cities’ inhabitants from PTS

Shaping the City that Decreases Overweight and Obesity through Healthy Built Environment

Cities are being built based on the concepts of comfortable, easy, and fast for the inhabitants. However, what is being constructed is promoting physical inactivity, and people are finding that what was being considered as convenient for daily life is, in fact, harmful to their physical health. This study points to the many components of a city that beats overweight issues and especially obesity.  The case study is the city of Beirut: in-depth interviews were conducted with a representative sample of Beirutis (people whose families come from the Beirut city and who were born in this city and are still living in it). These interviews helped measure these participants’ satisfaction with the physical activities and social life that is accessible for all the inhabitants through inclusive urban planning (such as clean open spaces, parks, sidewalks, free or inexpensive public spaces, facilities for green transportation, etc.). The results of the analysis of the interviews were supported with past data demonstrating the increasing obesity issues in Lebanon and previous data in urban and psychological studies that expound the way the brain processes the urban spaces that increase satisfaction and the urban areas that the city should be offering to its inhabitants for positive health outcomes.  The results uncovered the cycle of physical health, mental health, and social contacts which altogether affect the soul of a city where the aim is first and foremost the right to a healthy lifestyle
