Does How Much You Work Matter?

    Get PDF
Previous literature has suggested an inverted U relationship between hours worked and life satisfaction, with those who work more closely to 40 hours a week showing greater life satisfaction. Overtime work hours are associated with increased stress, fatigue,m and greater family-interference which can be detrimental to mental health. Furthermore, previous literature suggests that mental disorders are highly linked to life satisfaction. However, previous literature has focused on factors such as sex and specific occupations, with worker’s preference being . Therefore, we found a gap in the literature when investigating if specific countries who, on average, had longer work weeks had lower levels of life satisfaction and higher occurrence rates of mental disorders. To investigate the effects of long-working hours on mental health and life-satisfaction per country, data were extracted from various Our World in Data databases. Results from this study are still currently being analyzed, but we expect that countries with employees who, on average, work over the normal 40-hour week will have higher rates of mental disorders and lower levels of life satisfaction

Finding linearization violations in lock-free concurrent data structures

Thesis: M. Eng., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2013.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (page 31).Finding bugs in lock-free concurrent programs is hard. This is due in part to the difficulty of reasoning about the correctness of concurrent algorithms and the timing-sensitive nature of concurrent programs. One of the most widely used tools for reasoning about the correctness of concurrent algorithms is the linearization property. This thesis presents a tool for automatic dynamic checking of concurrent programs under the Total-Store-Order (TSO) memory model and a methodology for finding linearization violations automatically with the tool.by Sebastien Alberto Dabdoub.M. Interpretation of Principal Components

    Get PDF
The principal component analysis can be carried out two ways. First the R-mode: R = K\u27K and the second is the Q-mode: Q = K K\u27 where K is a data matrix centered by column or by row. The most commonly used method is the R-mode. It has been suggested that principal components computed from either the R-mode or the Q-mode may have the same interpretation. If this is true, then interpretation of the principal components could be put on a much more intuitive level in many applications. This will occur whenever one type of principal component is more intuitively related to the physical or natural system being studied than the other. The relationship between the principal components of the R-mode and the Q-mode have been investigated with the result that they show a perfect correlation between them. The conclusion that the principal components of the R-mode or the Q-mode have the same interpretation is established. An example is given to illustrate this work. The resulting interpretation is found to be the same as that obtained by Donald L. Phillips (1977) using different methods

Epistemic Violence and Colonial Legacies in the Representation of Refugee Women:Contesting Narratives of Vulnerability and Victimhood

    Get PDF
The traditional drafting and subsequent implementation of international refugee law have been criticised for relying on a male-centric understanding of persecution. Whilst this framework has recently shifted to include a more gender-sensitive interpretation, I argue that this introduction of gender within refugee status determination has traditionally relied on narratives infused with gendered and racialised stereotypes. In particular, it relies on a ‘white saviour’ colonial narrative that perceives refugee women as vulnerable victims in need of saving. Drawing on a decolonial and critical epistemological analysis that includes both a race and gender dimension, I unpack the epistemic violence and hidden colonial legacies in the representation of refugee women in case-law. Ultimately, this article concludes with a call for reframing the legal narrative around refugee women by approaching them as political actors rather than oppressed and vulnerable subjects

Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Exercise: The Role of Exercise Attitudes, Frequency, and Perception of Effort in Cognitive and Psychological Benefits

Exercise has been shown to have numerous benefits. Benefits often depend on the type and duration of exercise. Existing research focuses primarily on long-term aerobic exercise with studies showing 20-30 minutes of exercise to be beneficial. What remains unknown is how little exercise can show benefits. Anaerobic exercise has not been studied much, and when it has, findings have been mixed. Research is needed to elucidate the potential cognitive and psychological benefits of anaerobic exercise of different durations. In addition to exercise type, factors such as one’s attitude towards exercising, exercise frequency, and perception of effort may play a role in benefits received. It is important to investigate factors that may contribute to, and better explain, differences in cognitive and psychological benefits from exercise. Participants were randomly assigned to either aerobic or anaerobic exercise and completed pre- and post-test measures on mood and cognitive performance. Paired samples t-tests were run to assess differences in mood and cognition pre- vs post-aerobic and anaerobic exercise, independent samples t-tests were run to compare changes between aerobic and anaerobic exercise, and bivariate correlations were computed to assess relationships between RPE, exercise frequency, attitudes towards exercise, changes in mood and changes in cognition. Aerobic exercise was better at decreasing depression and improving trails time to completion, while still decreasing errors made on trails as well as tension, confusion, fatigue, and total mood disturbance. Anaerobic exercise was better at improving 2-Back accuracy, while still decreasing Trails A and B time to completion as well as tension, fatigue, confusion, and total mood disturbance, and increasing vigor. Additionally, more frequent exercise was associated with a greater decrease in depression and total mood disturbance as well as a more positive attitude towards exercise. The results show that an acute bout of exercise to a specific heart rate may be beneficial in receiving cognitive and psychological benefits, with frequency of exercise being important. Future studies should adopt different exercise protocols (e.g., cycling) to see if specific mode of exercise matters, as well as explore the role that factors such as endorphin release, sleep quality, exercise enjoyment, fitness level, and exercise motivation and history may play in explaining disparities in psychological and/or cognitive benefits to different types of exercise

A HOLISTIC APPROACH ON THE NEUROLOGICAL BENEFITS OF MUSIC

    Get PDF
A holistic perspective on human beings allows health carers to achieve an understanding of all the physiological, psychological and social disturbances of the patient as a whole. Through this article we wish to focus on how music has holistic neurological benefits. Music-therapy interventions can be more accessible and even “self-managed” by the patient’s relatives. They can reinforce social cohesion, family ties and patients’ self-esteem and thus produce a better quality of life. Overall, it is important to consider the benefits that an evolutionary understanding of musical behaviour and a holistic clinical perspective of the role of music may bring for rehabilitation of a wide range of symptoms and conditions
