After centuries of women being kept, for the most part, out of participating in politics, U.S. news publications heralded 1992 the “Year of the Woman” after a historic number of women were elected to the U.S. Senate. There were only four of them

Online Course Communication and International Student Academic Performance

Online course communication activities can be used to support the social and cognitive needs of students in online courses, but when those students are international students from across the globe studying in the United States where there are language and cultural differences, online learning can be a challenge. The purpose of this study was to examine undergraduate international students’ online course communication behaviors and their academic performance in order to inform quality online course development and delivery. In this qualitative case study, semistructured interviews with 11 undergraduate international students were conducted, online course communication behaviors were observed, and five faculty members were interviewed. Data collection took place virtually via videoconferencing that were recorded and then transcribed in order to code and analyze the data. The community of inquiry model was utilized in creating the instruments used for this study, as well as in the data analysis and conclusion formulation. Findings indicated that while international students performed well in their course communication activities, their learning experiences could have been enhanced by more direct instruction using multimedia, a higher degree of interaction with professors, and more informal social learning opportunities. Higher education institutions in the United States can benefit from this research by implementing recommended instructional design and delivery strategies. Exploring inner worlds: where cognitive psychology may take us

Tim Smith researches visual cognition through a variety of techniques that capture what subjects do when they watch naturalistic visual scenes. Although much research into scene perception uses static visual scenes, he is interested in how we process dynamic visual scenes, including feature films. Using techniques such as tracking the eye movements of viewers watching film sequences in combination with behavioural probes during and after viewing, he investigates the cognitive processes occurring during film viewing. His research has contributed to a computational model of fixation durations in scene viewing (Nuthmann, Smith, Engbert, & Henderson, 2010), and he has proposed an Attentional Theory of Cinematic Continuity (Smith, 2012), which has attracted the interest of ‘cognitivist’ film scholars, leading to his involvement in a number of presentations and projects that use empirical testing and modelling to explain what happens when we watch film sequences. I too am interested in the long history of attempts to understand the perceptual and cognitive processes involved in film viewing, which stretch from pioneering work by Munsterberg and Rank in the 1910s, through the renewed interest of Russian psychologists in the 1920s, following Pavlov’s classic studies in conditioning, and later of the Gestalt school, up to present-day work such as that of James Cutting (starting from the ‘psychophysics’ tradition) and Uri Hasson (‘neurocinematics’). In this exchange, written as a dialogue over several months, I invite Tim Smith to summarise some of his own work and to speculate on what value it may have for non-scientists interested in understanding how and why we perceive film as we do – and how this may be changin

The state of Florida's estuaries and future needs in estuarine research: Part 2. an academic research agenda (review draft)

    Get PDF
As a program supporting academic research that addresses recognized societal needs, the Florida Sea Grant Program is developing a research theme area on estuaries to provide a uniquely academic product that will augment mission-oriented research undertaken by government and by the private sector. This report is not a call for proposals. It does not prescribe a specific research plan. Rather, it is a concept paper designed to focus research on two broad "organizing themes": (1) the hydrology of Florida's estuaries, and (2) the impact of cyclic environmental variability on estuarine function. Account of the Ellesmere Ice Shelf Expeditions, organized by the Defence Research Board and Geological Survey of Canada. On reconnaissance Apr.-Aug. 1953, G.F. Hattersley-Smith and R.G. Blackadar made glaciological and geological observations west from Alert to Markham Bay (including Ross River and Feilden Peninsula), east to Cape Sheridan, and southwest along Wood River toward the United States Range. In 1954 (Apr.-Sept.), G.F. Hattersley-Smith, E.W. Marshall, A.P. Crary, and R.L. Christie made their main base on the ice shelf at Ward Hunt Island (83 05 N, 75 W), from which trips were made east to Cape Albert Edward and Cape Columbia, and west to Kruger Island on the edge of Nansen Sound, completing glaciological and geological reconnaissance of the north coast of Ellesmere. On the ice shelf near the Ward Hunt Island base, geological, geophysical, glaciological and oceanographic investigations, survey and leveling work, and meteorological observations were carried on. Reports are made on the glaciological work by G.F. Hattersley-Smith; geophysical and oceanographic studies, by A.P. Crary; and geological observations, 1954, by R.L. Christie. New place names (11) submitted to the Canadian Board on Geographical Names, also records and relics recovered from cairns of earlier expeditions, are reported. The account is introduced by a useful summary of parties visiting Northern Ellesmere 1876-1951, and of work on ice island T-3

Transdisciplinary Assignments in Graduate Health Education as a Model for Future Collaboration

    Get PDF
Transdisciplinary health care continues to be at the forefront of patient treatment in the medical arena, in part due to escalating health care costs, an increasing aging population, and the development of multiple chronic diseases. Gaining the knowledge, experience, and principles associated with transdisciplinary teamwork to successfully prepare for modern-day practice is therefore essential for individuals of various health care professions. This report describes an assignment developed and implemented to facilitate professional interaction between graduate physical therapy, nutrition, and nursing students. The objectives of this assignment were to determine through student evaluation the effects of a transdisciplinary experience on students\u27 understanding of the role of another discipline and students\u27 communication skills across disciplines. When evaluating the assignment, students most often remarked that they developed a greater understanding of the roles of the included disciplines and reported a significant increase in communication skills. However, some students did not concur that this assignment was effective due to the scheduling conflicts and lack of teamwork that can occur during a collaborative project. The students\u27 reports of their experiences in completing the assignment provide valuable insights for implementing and/or updating a preparatory transdisciplinary education component in other settings. Additional research can focus on the challenges faced by the majority of the students venturing into actual health care or real-world settings for comparative studies
