Diminishing Figures: Spectral Simulacra of Authors in Henry James’s and Max Beerbohm’s Decadent Short Stories

This paper analyses two stories by Henry James and two others by Max Beerbohm whose protagonists are, at the same time, writers and ghosts. Such a diegetic scenario is interesting because it seems to point at a disguised metaliterary treatment of current ideas about fin de siècle authoriality and a peculiar metalepsis of the concept of the death of the author, later popularized in post-structuralist France. After a contextualization of Henry James’s and Max Beerbohm’s dissimilar but equally significant contribution to the genre of the ‘Decadent short story’, the discourse turns to the features of their writer-ghosts, in order to retrace not only their conjunctural literary value, but also their fascinating impact on aesthetical matters. &nbsp

"'A Little Embroidery of His Own': Giuseppe Baretti as Cultural Mediator in Eighteenth-Century Europe"

Although a well-travelled research path, Anglo-Italian studies can, in our contemporary critical environment, be significantly enhanced through a close dialogue with cultural studies vis-à-vis the transnational status of its mediating figures. My aim here is to examine Giuseppe Baretti, one of the most notable of the early modern “literary migrants” between Italy and England, in this light. This paper tackles two relevant examples of Baretti’s work: first, his attempt, after his return to northern Italy in the 1760s following an extended period living in England and traveling through the Iberian Peninsula and France, to establish a literary magazine, La frusta letteraria (1764-5), according to English models; the second, his polemic against cultural stereotyping in his Account of the Manners and Customs of Italy (1768). Through direct (and sometimes harsh) criticism of several “perverse” cultural go-betweens – Samuel Sharp, Voltaire, and Carlo Denina, for example – Baretti sought to correct a widespread and strongly biased image of Italy, employing the advantage of his unique knowledge of both English and Italian cultures against both countries’ detractors

Ruolo del sistema ubiquitina-proteasoma (UPS) nella disfunzione beta cellulare del diabete di tipo 2 e possibili opzioni terapeutiche.

Ruolo del sistema ubiquitina-proteasoma (UPS) nella disfunzione beta cellulare del diabete di tipo 2 e possibili opzioni terapeutiche. Sebbene la disfunzione beta cellulare rivesta un ruolo di primaria importanza nel diabete di tipo 2, le informazioni ad oggi disponibili riguardanti il loro fenotipo molecolare in tale tipo di diabete, sono ancora piuttosto limitate. In questo lavoro, dapprima sono state valutate le differenze di espressione tra il trascrittoma di isole purificate da donatori affetti da diabete di tipo 2 (T2D) e quello di isole di donatori non diabetici (ND) mentre in seguito l’attenzione è stata focalizzata sul sistema ubiquitina-proteasoma (UPS), il principale pathway intracellulare deputato alla degradazione delle proteine. L’analisi microarray mostrava che 1230 geni risultavano differenzialmente espressi nelle isole diabetiche e che questi influenzavano sia la struttura che la funzione di tale tessuto. In seguito a questa ed ad altre analisi emergeva decisamente una riduzione dell’UPS nel T2D. Gli esperimenti di RT-PCR quantitativa mostravano una riduzione dell’espressione di UBE2K, PSMB7 e UCHL1 (geni dell’UPS). Studi di immunoistochimica rivelavano un maggior accumulo di ubiquitina accompagnato ad una riduzione dell’attività del proteasoma in T2D. L’inibizione diretta del proteasoma e l’esposizione ad acido palmitico riducevano l’ attività del proteasoma e a questo si accompagnava una riduzione della secrezione insulinica indotta da glucosio. La metformina e il GLP-1, due molecole comunemente utilizzate nel trattamento del diabete di tipo 2 in grado di ripristinare un corretto rilascio insulinico in risposta a glucosio associato ad un aumento dell’attività del proteasoma. In questo studio si mostra la presenza di numerose alterazioni nel trascrittoma delle isole diabetiche e si sottolinea l’importanza delle alterazioni a carico del sistema UPS come meccanismo associato alla disfunzione beta cellulare nel diabete di tipo 2

Questo lavoro intende presentare la figura del critico-artista, lo scrittore che dirige il suo intelletto verso l'analisi della letteratura e non solo verso la produzione della stessa.Oscillante tra due domini strettamente interconnessi ma assai diversi fra loro, il critico-artista è una figura che molto ha contribuito alla definizione del campo d'azione della letteratura. L'analisi qui proposta prosegue poi con una disamina puntuale della produzione critica di David Lodge, incentrata su concetti teorici come la figura dell'autore, il realismo letterario etc., fino ad arrivare ai celebri "campus novels", di cui la critica letteraria diviene vero e proprio "personaggio"

LA «SPECIALE PROVVIDENZA» NELLA CADUTA DI UNA FALENA: IBRIDISMI WOOLFIANI TRA SAGGIO E SHORT STORY

Il contributo intende mettere in luce le dinamiche di ibridazione tra i generi saggio e novella nella prosa breve di Virginia Woolf, in particolare in quegli esemplari di saggi che presentano delle caratteristiche smaccatamente immaginifiche e narrative che li distanziano nettamente dall’ideale di saggio quale «breve testo nonfinzionale in prosa». Nota al grande pubblico proprio per la sua programmatica ricerca di codici espressivi sempre nuovi e per le sperimentazioni con i generi più disparati, nel caso della prosa breve Woolf riesce con successo a infrangere i confini tra argomentativo e narrativo per giungere a una forma mediana che trae la sua identità sia dalla fiction che dalla nonfiction. Tramite un’analisi di alcune tra le short stories e i saggi più significativi, il contributo vuole essere uno spunto per una più ampia riflessione su quanto la mescolanza di stilemi diversi sia non solo un tratto letterario tipico della letteratura modernista, quanto piuttosto la risposta a una necessità di trovare una via altra nel panorama letterario, quasi una pulsione creativa primigenia che, nel caso delle contaminazioni tra saggio e narrativa breve, può essere affiancata al concetto di saggismo proposto da Robert Musil. The Death of the Moth, Street Haunting e molti altri saggi woolfiani permettono quindi di ricalibrare le demarcazioni fra generi, e di ripensare gli idealtipi che nella mentalità comune sono assurti a modelli e per l’uno e per l’altro dei due generi brevi in prosa, che in questa sede rappresentano i limiti estremi dello spettro di analisi

Insulin secretory granules labelled with phogrin-fluorescent proteins show alterations in size, mobility and responsiveness to glucose stimulation in living β-cells

The intracellular life of insulin secretory granules (ISGs) from biogenesis to secretion depends on their structural (e.g. size) and dynamic (e.g. diffusivity, mode of motion) properties. Thus, it would be useful to have rapid and robust measurements of such parameters in living β-cells. To provide such measurements, we have developed a fast spatiotemporal fluctuation spectroscopy. We calculate an imaging-derived Mean Squared Displacement (iMSD), which simultaneously provides the size, average diffusivity, and anomalous coefficient of ISGs, without the need to extract individual trajectories. Clustering of structural and dynamic quantities in a multidimensional parametric space defines the ISGs’ properties for different conditions. First, we create a reference using INS-1E cells expressing proinsulin fused to a fluorescent protein (FP) under basal culture conditions and validate our analysis by testing well-established stimuli, such as glucose intake, cytoskeleton disruption, or cholesterol overload. After, we investigate the effect of FP-tagged ISG protein markers on the structural and dynamic properties of the granule. While iMSD analysis produces similar results for most of the lumenal markers, the transmembrane marker phogrin-FP shows a clearly altered result. Phogrin overexpression induces a substantial granule enlargement and higher mobility, together with a partial de-polymerization of the actin cytoskeleton, and reduced cell responsiveness to glucose stimulation. Our data suggest a more careful interpretation of many previous ISG-based reports in living β-cells. The presented data pave the way to high-throughput cell-based screening of ISG structure and dynamics under various physiological and pathological conditions
