    Because I Shave My Armpits… : A Content Analysis of #WomenAgainstFeminism on Twitter

    Because of the speed and convenience of Twitter, it has become one of the most widely utilized platforms for breaking news and is often used to raise awareness of current social issues, political happenings, and social injustices. As more women use Twitter and other social media to embrace the feminist label online, an array of criticism has come to surface. A new movement, #WomenAgainstFeminism, has become popular with Twitter users who reject feminism ideals and the feminism label. Research has been done examining the presence of online feminism, “hashtag feminism,” and online activism in general. Currently, there is no research analyzing the online reaction to feminism, #WomenAgainstFeminism. The purpose of this study is to analyze tweets containing #WomenAgainstFeminism to identify the salient reasons for rejecting feminism, stereotypes associated with feminism, and characteristics associated with feminists. This study broadens the current literature that analyzes attitudes towards feminism, stereotypes of feminists, and feminist identification. This study also adds to the growing body of literature that appreciates the impact Twitter and other social media networks have on members of society and social movements. This study differs from previous research because it focuses on the common stereotypes and characteristics associated with feminism that are prevalent in a social media campaign created to refute feminism

    Solving eigenvalue problems on curved surfaces using the Closest Point Method

    Eigenvalue problems are fundamental to mathematics and science. We present a simple algorithm for determining eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on rather general curved surfaces. Our algorithm, which is based on the Closest Point Method, relies on an embedding of the surface in a higher-dimensional space, where standard Cartesian finite difference and interpolation schemes can be easily applied. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between a problem defined in the embedding space and the original surface problem. For open surfaces, we present a simple way to impose Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions while maintaining second-order accuracy. Convergence studies and a series of examples demonstrate the effectiveness and generality of our approach

    Spectrum is a work for eight dancers and is composed of six sections based upon seven poems written by the choreographer. The basic intention is to explore the relationship between poetry and movement and the various ways in which the two art forms can be combined to enhance communication. Section I, entitled "Ontology," and set to "Taurus" by Randy California and "Mood for a day" by Steve Howe, is a dance of awakening and exploration. The poem is recited by the dancers as part of the movement. Section II, "Rain," provides a light-hearted comment, accompanied by J.S. Bach's "Prelude and Fugue No. 2 in C Minor" (from Book I of "The Well-Tempered Clavier") and rendered by William Carlos on the synthesizer. The poem is prerecorded on the sound track. This section contrasts with the third, "The Sky is Crying," to "Graceful Ghost" by William Bolcom. This portion uses vaudeville imagery and stylized declamation to create a serious comment on the course of humanity

    Phase Synchronization in Railway Timetables

    Timetable construction belongs to the most important optimization problems in public transport. Finding optimal or near-optimal timetables under the subsidiary conditions of minimizing travel times and other criteria is a targeted contribution to the functioning of public transport. In addition to efficiency (given, e.g., by minimal average travel times), a significant feature of a timetable is its robustness against delay propagation. Here we study the balance of efficiency and robustness in long-distance railway timetables (in particular the current long-distance railway timetable in Germany) from the perspective of synchronization, exploiting the fact that a major part of the trains run nearly periodically. We find that synchronization is highest at intermediate-sized stations. We argue that this synchronization perspective opens a new avenue towards an understanding of railway timetables by representing them as spatio-temporal phase patterns. Robustness and efficiency can then be viewed as properties of this phase pattern

    Teaching for the transition: The Canadian PGY-1 neurosurgery \u27rookie camp\u27

    Background: Transitioning from medical school to residency is difficult and stressful, necessitating innovation in easing this transition. In response, a Canadian neurosurgical Rookie Camp was designed and implemented to foster acquisition of technical, cognitive and behavioral skills among incoming Canadian post graduate year one (PGY-1) neurosurgery residents. Methods: The inaugural Rookie Camp was held in July 2012 in Halifax. The curriculum was developed based on a national needs-assessment and consisted of a pre-course manual, 7 case-based stations, 4 procedural skills stations and 2 group discussions. The content was clinically focused, used a variety of teaching methods, and addressed multiple CanMEDS competencies. Evaluation included participant and faculty surveys and a pre-course, post-course, and 3-month retention knowledge test. Results: 17 of 23 PGY-1 Canadian neurosurgical residents participated in the Camp. All agreed the course content was relevant for PGY-1 training and the experience prepared them for residency. All participants would recommend the course to future neurosurgical residents. A statistically significant improvement was observed in knowledge related to course content (F(2,32) = 7.572, p\u3c0.002). There were no significant differences between post-test and retention-test scores at three months. Conclusion: The inaugural Canadian Neurosurgery Rookie Camp for PGY-1 residents was successfully delivered, with engagement from participants, training programs, the Canadian Neurosurgical Society, and the Royal College. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge, which was shown to be retained, the course eased junior residents\u27 transition to residency by fostering camaraderie and socialization within the specialty

    Unraveling the Design Principle for Motif Organization in Signaling Networks

    Cellular signaling networks display complex architecture. Defining the design principle of this architecture is crucial for our understanding of various biological processes. Using a mathematical model for three-node feed-forward loops, we identify that the organization of motifs in specific manner within the network serves as an important regulator of signal processing. Further, incorporating a systemic stochastic perturbation to the model we could propose a possible design principle, for higher-order organization of motifs into larger networks in order to achieve specific biological output. The design principle was then verified in a large, complex human cancer signaling network. Further analysis permitted us to classify signaling nodes of the network into robust and vulnerable nodes as a result of higher order motif organization. We show that distribution of these nodes within the network at strategic locations then provides for the range of features displayed by the signaling network

    Impact of Skeletal Complications on Total Medical Care Costs among Patients with Bone Metastases of Lung Cancer

    IntroductionPrevious studies have estimated the costs of skeletal-related events (SREs) for patients with bone metastases of solid tumors by tallying costs for services specifically attributable to these events. This approach may underestimate costs if SREs indirectly increase use of other services.MethodsThis is a retrospective observational study using a large health insurance claims database. Patients with bone metastases of lung cancer who experienced ≥1 SRE were matched to similar patients without SREs based on propensity scores. Kaplan-Meier estimated total medical care costs were compared for propensity-matched samples of patients with SREs and without SREs.ResultsWe identified 534 patients with lung cancer and bone metastases, including 295 (55%) with ≥1 SRE. After matching, there were 162 patients each in the SRE and no-SRE groups with mean follow-up of 5.3 and 3.9 months, respectively. In the SRE group, costs of treatment of SREs were 9,480(959,480 (95% CI 7,625 to 11,374)perpatient.Totalmedicalcarecostswere11,374) per patient. Total medical care costs were 27,982 (95% CI 15,921to15,921 to 40,625) greater for SRE versus no-SRE patients (p < 0.001).ConclusionsThe costs of SREs in patients with lung cancer and bone metastases are substantial and potentially greater than previously estimated
