StichwörterOdergebiet, Steppenrasen, Carabidae, Staphylinidae, Araneae, Bewertung, Naturschutz. The area around Lebus is remarkable for the occurrence of numerous xerothermophile species, as well as for its faunistic value in providing many first records and records of rediscovered species. Some of these reach the northern or western edge of their range in the Oder Region. During the research period 1198 species of arthropods were recorded on 20 sampling areas in the Oderberge Nature Reserve. The degree of endangerment of selected species and types of habitat is indicated. The synbiological behaviour of Meloidae species with respect to the species-rich fauna of Hymenoptera (determined by the habitat structure, partly sparse vegetation, and loess content of the soil on the slopes of the Oder Valley) is described and characteristic combinations of species presented in exemplary fashion for selected habitats. The inventory of beetles for the area is nearly unaltered since 1930. An evaluation of the habitats for the purposes of nature conservation is presented. The subcontinental steppe-grasslands of the Oder Valley slopes and the sections of banks of the Oder without dams are identified as areas of the highest value. Recommendations are made for methods of management which will help protect them.KeywordsOdergebiet, Steppenrasen, Carabidae, Staphylinidae, Araneae, Bewertung, Naturschutz

Nebraska and rural electrification through 1940

Since Nebraska is primarily an agricultural state, the struggle to bring electricity to its rural areas played an important role in the long-standing battle to decrease the disparity between living standards in rural and urban America. During the first two decades of the twentieth century, telephones and automobiles lessened rural isolation while increased utilization of tractors and other technological innovations rendered farm labor less tedious. Nevertheless, without electricity, the one modern innovation that more than any other brought comfort and convenience within the reach of the urban masses, living and working conditions on the farm remained comparatively primitive. Farm families performed backbreaking drudgery as had their forebearers for centuries without aid from electrical conveniences. Modern bathrooms were rare on farms not equiped with electric water pumps. Candles, lantern or gas lamps provided inadequate and dangerous lighting in houses and barns while only the moon illuminated country lanes and yards

Measurement of antibacterial properties of foil‑backed electrospun nanofibers

    Get PDF
Current methodologies for evaluation of antibacterial properties of traditional textiles are not applicable to foil‑backed, poorly‑absorbent electrospun nanofiber materials, since existing test methods require absorbent fabrics. Since electrospun nanofibers are adhered to the foil backing only by electrostatic interactions, methods used to evaluate antibacterial properties of surfaces cannot be used because these protocols cause the nanofibers to lift from the foil backing. Therefore, a novel method for measurement of the antibacterial properties of electrospun metallic foil‑backed nanofiber materials was developed. This method indicated that acetate‑based nanofibers manufactured to contain 5 to 30 weight percent of cold‑pressed hemp seed oil or full‑spectrum hemp extract inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus in a dose‑dependent manner, from 85.3% (SEM =2.2) inhibition to 99.3% (SEM =0.15) inhibition, respectively. This testing method represents an advanced manufacturing prototype procedure for assessment of antibacterial properties of novel electrospun, metallic foil‑backed nanofiber materials

Relationships between School Desegregation and Government Housing Programs: A Milwaukee Case Study

School desegregation was initiated in Milwaukee in the 1976-77 school year through a court-ordered city desegregation program and a state-financed city-suburban pupil transfer program. This pilot study by the Metropolitan Integration Research Center explored three dimensions of the complex interrelationships between these school desegregation programs and housing patterns in Milwaukee County. First, a field study explored the attitudes of minority families participating in the innovative city-suburban school desegregation program. The survey found high satisfaction with the educational program and relatively strong interest in possible integrating housing moves to suburban areas where children were busing to school. Secondly, the pupil movement under the city and metropolitan desegregation plans was assessed for its impact on segregated residential housing patterns in the community. The largely voluntary plan implemented by the Milwaukee Public Schools appeared to have negative impacts on racially changing neighborhoods. The highest percentages of students were leaving schools in residentially integrated areas, and schools in transitional areas were allowed to tip to predominantly black. The third aspect of the study analyzed federal rental housing programs operating in the county. The Section 8 rent assistance program, operated by three governmental units in Milwaukee County, appeared to reinforce the segregated housing patterns of the community and failed to complement school desegregation efforts. Scattered site and traditional public housing provided by the City of Milwaukee also impacted negatively on the racial make-up of neighborhood schools in the city. The study suggests the need for more coordinated efforts by school and housing officials if successful, long-range integration is to occur
