    Clarinet Multiphonics: A Catalog and Analysis of Their Production Strategies

    abstract: Clarinet multiphonics have become increasingly popular among composers since they were first introduced in the 1950s. However, it is a topic poorly understood by both performers and composers, which sometimes leads to the use of acoustically impossible multiphonics in compositions. Producing multiphonics requires precise manipulations of embouchure force, air pressure, and tongue position. These three factors are invisible to the naked eye during clarinet performance, leading to many conflicting theories about multiphonic production strategies, often based on subjective perception of the performer. This study attempts to observe the latter factor—tongue motion—during multiphonic production in situ using ultrasound. Additionally, a multiphonic catalog containing 604 dyad multiphonics was compiled as part of this study. The author hypothesized that nearly all, if not all, of the multiphonics can be produced using one of four primary production strategies. The four production strategies are: (A) lowering the back of the tongue while sustaining the upper note; (B) raising the back of the tongue while sustaining the upper note; (C) changing the tongue position to that of the lower note while sustaining the upper note; and (D) raising the root of the tongue (a sensation similar to constricting the throat) while sustaining the upper note. To distill production strategies into four primary categories, the author documented his perceived tongue motion over twenty repetitions of playing every multiphonic in the catalog. These perceptions were then confirmed or corrected through ultrasound investigation sessions after every five repetitions. The production strategies detailed in this study are only for finding the correct voicing to produce the multiphonics. The catalog compiled during this study is organized using two different organizational systems: the first uses the traditional method of organizing by pitch; the second uses a fingering-based system to facilitate the ease of finding multiphonics in question, since notated pitches of multiphonics often differ between sources.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Music 201

    Fringe analysis for parallel MacroSplit insertion algorithms in 2--3 trees

    We extend the fringe analysis (used to study the expected behavior of balanced search trees under sequential insertions) to deal with synchronous parallel insertions on 2--3 trees. Given an insertion of k keys in a tree with n nodes, the fringe evolves following a transition matrix whose coefficients take care of the precise form of the algorithm but does not depend on k or n. The derivation of this matrix uses the binomial transform recently developed by P. Poblete, J. Munro and Th. Papadakis. Due to the complexity of the preceding exact analysis, we develop also two approximations. A first one based on a simplified parallel model, and a second one based on the sequential model. These two approximated analysis prove that the parallel insertions case does not differ significantly from the sequential case, namely on the terms O(1/n^2).Postprint (published version

    Detection of Trending Topic Communities: Bridging Content Creators and Distributors

    The rise of a trending topic on Twitter or Facebook leads to the temporal emergence of a set of users currently interested in that topic. Given the temporary nature of the links between these users, being able to dynamically identify communities of users related to this trending topic would allow for a rapid spread of information. Indeed, individual users inside a community might receive recommendations of content generated by the other users, or the community as a whole could receive group recommendations, with new content related to that trending topic. In this paper, we tackle this challenge, by identifying coherent topic-dependent user groups, linking those who generate the content (creators) and those who spread this content, e.g., by retweeting/reposting it (distributors). This is a novel problem on group-to-group interactions in the context of recommender systems. Analysis on real-world Twitter data compare our proposal with a baseline approach that considers the retweeting activity, and validate it with standard metrics. Results show the effectiveness of our approach to identify communities interested in a topic where each includes content creators and content distributors, facilitating users' interactions and the spread of new information.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, Hypertext 2017 conferenc
