How We Want To Be Treated! What Clark County African American Patients Want Their Health Providers To Know

Research continues to validate the fact that cultural values and beliefs play a major role in determining the extent to which an individual will engage in healthy behaviors, adhere to medical regimen, and seek care when necessary. A 2000 survey of 950 members of predominately African American churches in Clark County, Nevada (a county which comprises Las Vegas) conducted by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension found members preferred healthcare providers as a source of information on health-related matters. Yet, research shows that for a variety of reasons, many African Americans do not regularly see a health care professional, and often do not comply with prescribed regimens

Collaborative Collective Algorithms to Coordinate UGVs

Sentel/Brilliant Innovations has developed autonomous UGVs (unmanned ground vehicles) capable of generating a map of an unknown location through exploration using local software and the power of Google Tango technology. This project was tasked with developing an efficient and capable map-stitching solution allowing multiple UGVs to coordinate their movements and share information in order to greatly improve the speed at which these drones can be used to generate maps. The solution utilizes the processing power of a Raspberry Pi to pull maps from a Redis server and stitch them together. Once stitched, the maps are redistributed via the Redis server back through the network, providing every UGV the opportunity to obtain the global map. All of this stitching is performed on a single UGV, freeing the other drones to focus on generating and uploading their own unique maps to the server. The drones can use this new information to better inform their next move to prevent multiple drones from generating a map of the same location. In the future, Sentel/Brilliant Innovations hopes to take this technology and attach more advanced sensors to the drones, allowing them to add greater detail of the environment to the map rather than simply drawing boundaries. These drones have many potential applications, such as search and rescue, seeking out potential hazards, and intelligence for military and civil use.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/capstone/1187/thumbnail.jp

technical reportThis paper describes a fast procedure in processing hidden surface pictures with the output in vector form. The program has been written expressly for a Decsystem 10 and has performed successfully on three different installations. The algorithm which is being used is a modification to the Watkins' Algorithm. Consequently, the program has inherited many key features which provide for speed, compactness, and flexibility

Review of \u3ci\u3eIndigenous Women and Feminism: Politics, Activism, Culture\u3c/i\u3e edited by Cheryl Suzack, Shari M. Huhndorf, Jeanne Perreault, and Jean Barman

The editors of this volume recognize politics, activism, and culture as three areas where Indigenous women come together across place and time in order to counter colonial policies that have diminished their power, status, and material circumstances in mainstream society as well as in their own communities. The essays included in Indigenous Women and Feminism explore these three areas through the work of Indigenous women living in the Great Plains regions of Canada and the United States. The essays in part 1, Politics, point to leadership as an imperative component of Indigenous feminism. Their authors examine the politics of leadership from a cultural perspective through personal experience to uncover the legal and ethical frameworks that have transformed the lives of Indigenous women, including the leadership styles of two creative historical figures, Nancy Ward and Laura Cornelius Kellogg

Flipping the Switch: Keeping the Lights On Via a Transition to Organic Photovoltaics

As human civilization becomes ever-more industrialized, excessive greenhouse gas emissions are fueling global warming and climate change. With the effects of these phenomenon already being observed, we are quickly approaching a tipping point where our general apathy towards disturbances in the earth\u27s natural systems will cause global devastation. In order to fight this apathy, society must turn to activism, namely through breaking our fossil fuel addiction and investing in renewable energy. However, not all forms of renewable energy are created equal; solar energy is the most abundant, requires the least infrastructure, and has the greatest future research potential. Within the realm of solar research, organic photovoltaics (OPVs) provide a promising alternative to today\u27s costly siliconbased solar cells. OPVs are thin, lightweight, and flexible solar panels with a multitude of interesting applications, including portable electronics, cars, windows, buildings, etc. In this thesis, the process of electricity generation and photonic upconversion, the molecules used in the different layers and their electrical and molecular properties, and the design and construction processes of the solar cell are all discussed in depth in their respective chapters. With this developing area of solar technology, we will be able to bring electricity to developing nations and reduce our environmental footprint

COIN doctrine for the 21st century GWOT: Improvements for battling Al Qaeda in the Western Sahel

    Get PDF
This paper takes an interdisciplinary approach in examining the United States role in the conflict in Mali and Niger. As a strategic locale in a region that is plagued with conflict, the U.S. is faced with increasing involvement across Africa, specifically the Western Sahel. With an Al Qaeda that continues to shift, change, and grow, the U.S. is faced with a War on Terror that is increasingly difficult to contain or succeed in. In an effort to shift the narrative to one from counterterrorism to one of counterinsurgency, this paper takes an in depth look at the political, geographical, sociocultural, economic, and religious factors that have helped Al Qaeda to expand in the Western Sahel. The paper also examines the United States’ geopolitical role in the world, its historic military successes and failures, and what it needs to do to win the Global War on Terror. The second half of the paper moves beyond analysis to suggested improvements to U.S. actions at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels. The primary actors examined are of our political and military leadership, international partners, conventional military forces, special operations forces, and civic and development actors. This paper attempts to show how we can refine and improve the United States’ role in combating AQIM in the Western Sahel by using fewer resources, better meeting the needs of the local population, and creating an environment that is more difficult for our takfiri opponents to succeed in
