Eager Eugenicists: A Reappraisal of the Birth Control Society of Hamilton

This article examines the formative years (1931-1940) of Canada's first birth control clinic, the Birth Control Society of Hamilton (BCSH), and challenges the perception of the BCSH as a low-key and non-ideological endeavour. New historical evidence indicates that the BCSH shared in the eugenic ideology of other contemporary Canadian birth control organizations and was an active participant in the debates surrounding contraception and eugenics.Cet article examine les années formatives (1931-1940) de la Birth Control Society of Hamilton (BCSH), la première clinique de la planification familiale au Canada. Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich im Wesentlichen mit dem außenpolitischen und reformatorischen Wirken Heinrichs VIII. auseinander. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses steht aber nicht die wohl unumstritten interessante Persönlichkeit des Herrschers, sondern vielmehr seine verzweifelten Versuche, einen für sich selbst und seiner Funktion entsprechenden Weg aus einer unbequemen Ehe zu finden. Die dafür eingesetzten Mittel und Methoden lassen aber häufig einen gezielten und strategisch klugen Plan vermissen, da sie sich ausschließlich an den persönlichen Befindlichkeiten des Herrschers orientieren. Dies findet sowohl in den außen- als auch innenpolitischen Aktivitäten des Monarchen seinen Niederschlag. Es kann dabei festgehalten werden, dass Heinrichs Regierungszeit wohl als Wendepunkt in der englischen Geschichte angesehen werden kann, auch in Hinblick darauf, dass kaum ein Herrscher zuvor dynastische Interessen derart eigenwillig vorangetrieben hat. Dies bedeutete für England aber auch, dass nicht nur Neues geschaffen, sondern auch Bestehendes und Bewährtes zerstört wurde. Heinrichs Bruch mit Rom, der Anfang und die Entwicklung der Reformation in England bis hin zu ihrer endgültigen Gestaltung, stehen ebenfalls im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Dabei ist vor allem zu beachten, dass das Bedürfnis Heinrichs nach fundamentaler Sicherung der dynastischen Nachfolge zu einer Reihe nicht wirklich steuerbarer Einflussfaktoren geführt haben. Ubiquitous molecular substrates for associative learning and activity-dependent neuronal facilitation.

Recent evidence suggests that many of the molecular cascades and substrates that contribute to learning-related forms of neuronal plasticity may be conserved across ostensibly disparate model systems. Notably, the facilitation of neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission that contribute to associative learning in Aplysia and Hermissenda, as well as associative LTP in hippocampal CA1 cells, all require (or are enhanced by) the convergence of a transient elevation in intracellular Ca2+ with transmitter binding to metabotropic cell-surface receptors. This temporal convergence of Ca2+ and G-protein-stimulated second-messenger cascades synergistically stimulates several classes of serine/threonine protein kinases, which in turn modulate receptor function or cell excitability through the phosphorylation of ion channels. We present a summary of the biophysical and molecular constituents of neuronal and synaptic facilitation in each of these three model systems. Although specific components of the underlying molecular cascades differ across these three systems, fundamental aspects of these cascades are widely conserved, leading to the conclusion that the conceptual semblance of these superficially disparate systems is far greater than is generally acknowledged. We suggest that the elucidation of mechanistic similarities between different systems will ultimately fulfill the goal of the model systems approach, that is, the description of critical and ubiquitous features of neuronal and synaptic events that contribute to memory induction

Innovation and Commercial Information: A Delicate Balance

Canadian law concerning trade secrets and confidential information fosters innovation by achieving a delicate balance between employer and employee interests. The rich doctrinal landscape allows for a flexible approach to the scope of protection together with a thoughtful analysis of the underlying relational expectations of the parties. The balance of interests achieved fosters innovation by protecting commercial information while concurrently facilitating labour mobility. Criminal legislation, which transfers the cost of prosecution to the state, eliminates some subtleties of case law and threatens severe sanctions, would dampen innovation by upsetting the balance of interests in favour of employer-plaintiffs. This effect has been illustrated by empirical studies of the impact of fluctuating American legal protection of commercial information on employee mobility and innovation. Until such time as there is clear evidence that civil remedies are inadequate to protect the socio-economic order of Canada, the urge to invoke criminal sanctions should be rejected.LL.M

SpracheDie steigende Verfügbarkeit von historischen Orderbuchdatensätzen macht es sowohl Marktteilnehmern als auch akademischen Institutionen möglich, die Marktmikrostruktur in einem noch nie dagewesenen Detailgrad zu analysieren. Die im Rahmen dieser Diplomarbeit vorgestellten Softwarebibliotheken ermöglichen die Rekonstruktion und Visualisierung eines von der Deutschen Börse AG1 und dem Institut für Investmentbanking und Katallaktik2 zur Verfügung gestellten XETRA DAX30 Orderbuch-Datensatzes. Im einleitenden Rekonstruktionsprozess geht es vor allem um die Herstellung eines bereinigten und konsistenten Datensatzes. Dieser kann anschließend mit dem implementierten Orderbuch-Visualisierungstool graphisch dargestellt und analysiert werden. Die Hauptfeatures des Visualisierungstools umfassen eine stufenlose Zoom-Funktion und diverse Filter, um die zu visualisierenden Orders einzuschränken. Dadurch ist es sogar möglich einige algorithmische Handelsstrategien zu identifizieren und durch die Anwendung von Filtern hervorgehoben darzustellen.The rising availability of orderbook datasets enables market participants as well as academic institutions to analyze market microstructure at an unprecedented degree of detail. The software libraries which are presented within this thesis allow the reconstruction and visualization of a proprietary XETRA DAX30 dataset made available thanks to Deutsche Börse AG and the Institute for Investmentbanking and Catallactics. The goal of the preliminary reconstruction process is to obtain a cleaned and consistent dataset.Subsequently this dataset can be graphically represented and analyzed using the orderbook visualization tool. The main features of the tool are a continuous zoom function and various filters to restrict the visualization of orders. Thus it is even possible to identify some algorithmic trading strategies which can be highlighted by the application of implemented filter functions.11
