The effect of education on life satisfaction among formal sector retirees in Lagos State was assessed to determine its impact on life adjustment in retirement. The study also examined the effects of education on self-rated health and well-being of formal sector retirees. Life course perspective, dependency theory, Modernization theory of ageing and wealth flow theory were adopted for the theoretical framework. Using a multi-staged systematic sampling method, retirees from the public sector and organized private sector were covered through questionnaire and structured interviews. Questionnaires were administered on 1321 retirees while 20 in-depth interviews were conducted for executive members of pensioners’ unions and pension managers. Older retirees with at least secondary education had better living conditions and reported higher life satisfaction than their counterparts with lower educational qualifications. The paper concludes with a policy implication, stressing the importance of income security and life skills to retirement planning and life satisfaction in retirement.

Later life is celebrated in Africa because it is seen as a blessing from God. Therefore, older people are generally treated with dignity. But with modernization, African senior citizens suffer diverse challenges and experience difficulty in meeting their basic needs. Hence, the need for sustainable livelihoods that will address life deprivations and improve the quality of life of Nigerian elders. This article examines the sustainability of retirement livelihoods and its impact on quality of life of formal sector retirees in Nigeria. It argues that beyond the conventional survival mechanisms, Nigerian retirees require resilient and sustainable livelihoods in order to enhance their quality of life. Life course perspective and activity theory are adopted as explanatory tools. With the aid of a multi-stage systematic sampling method, 1,321 Nigerian retirees in Lagos State were studied to examine their livelihoods and quality of life. Empirical data reveal that access to multiple sources of income promotes sustainability of retirement livelihoods and quality of life with private sector retirees being more empowered and adequately protected against life vicissitudes. This culminates in vulnerability and precarious living conditions of public sector retirees. The article concludes with the need to strengthen formal and informal social supports in order to improve retirement livelihoods and promote quality of life of retirees

Introduction: mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) is the transmission of HIV from a mother to the child during pregnancy, labour and breastfeeding. People living with HIV (PLHIV) are sexually active and also HIV can be transmitted while trying to achieve pregnancy involving unprotected hetero-sexual intercourse. Fertility desire among PLHIV is increasing due to improved quality of life and survival following commencement of anti-retroviral treatment and available reproductive health services. The objective of the study was to determine the association between knowledge on MTCT of HIV and sexuality and fertility desire. Methods: this study was descriptive cross-sectional applying systematic sampling technique among PLHIV using semi-structured interviewer administered questionnaires. Data was analysed using SPSS version 23.0. Chi square test was used for statistical analysis. At 95% confidence interval a P-value of <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: a total of 168 PLHIV were studied, 63.3% females and 36.7% males. Majority (81.5%) of the respondents were sexually active and 64.1% had fertility desire. On awareness of MTCT 62.5% had heard of MTCT but only 28.2% had good knowledge. No association was found between knowledge of MTCT and sexuality and fertility desire respectively. Conclusion: PLHIV had high awareness but poor knowledge on MTCT of HIV, hence the need for healthcare workers to provide sexual and reproductive health counselling including information on MTCT to both male and female PLHIV during routine clinic visits

Human society has evolved through various stages of development and changes. The ability to cope anchors on the level of knowledge available and fervent effort made for its application. This paper, focuses on the concept of adult and non-formal education, and its functions to the society. It also highlights effect of COVID-19 on global education practices. It further X-rays the potency of distance learning in the era of COVID-19 pandemic. It concludes that distance learning is indispensable in adult and non-formal education practice in 21st century. The paper suggested among others the provision of necessary information communication technologies to enhance learning process and adequate supervision of distant learning programmes to enhance standard. &nbsp

The burden of hepatitis c virus infection and access to treatment among rural dwellers in a north central Nigeria

    Get PDF
Hepatitis C virus infection is a public health disease but the efforts to control it have not fully integrated indigent rural dwellers. This study explores the burden of the disease in Jengre, a rural population in Nigeria. It is a mixed retrospective and qualitative study. Data on 1,339 persons who received HCV testing in Jengre SDA Hospital (over a one year period) was collated and analyzed. All 7 healthcare providers in the hospital were recruited into a focused group discussion on hepatitis C treatment and their experiences in the hospital. A prevalence of 18.4% was obtained and 11.7% among apparently healthy individuals. The prevalence of hepatitis C in this study is among the highest in the world and there is a total absence of treatment available to those who are infected. This leaves the patients helpless and portends a grave danger to the realization of international hepatitis C elimination goals. Keywords: Hepatitis, Nigeria, epidemiology, prevalence, HC

C7-Derivatization of C3-Alkylindoles Including Tryptophans and Tryptamines

    Get PDF
A versatile strategy for C7-selective boronation of tryptophans, tryptamines, and 3-alkylindoles by way of a single-pot C2/C7-diboronation–C2-protodeboronation sequence is described. The combination of a mild iridium-catalyzed C2/C7-diboronation followed by an in situ palladium-catalyzed C2-protodeboronation allows efficient entry to valuable C7-boroindoles that enable further C7-derivatization. The versatility of the chemistry is highlighted by the gram-scale synthesis of C7-boronated N-Boc-L-tryptophan methyl ester and the rapid synthesis of C7-halo, C7-hydroxy, and C7-aryl tryptophan derivatives.National Institute of General Medical Sciences (U.S.) (GM089732)National Institute of General Medical Sciences (U.S.) (GM074825)National Science Foundation (U.S.) (CHE-1205646
