Evaluation of virtual routing appliances as routers virtual environment

    Get PDF
A virtual routing appliance is a system for the rapid, automated management and employment of virtual networks. Virtual routing appliances utilize virtual machines to enable virtual infrastructure, and they have been used commonly in order to implement experimental networks and devoted subnets over a virtual network. Existing research in this area such as cluster-based virtual routers, and Xen routers require the use of physical resources to establish connectivity and to guarantee efficient resource utilization. The virtual routing appliance uses dynamic routing protocols such as RIP, and OSPF to forward traffic between different subnets and manage IP packets at the IP layer. The virtual routing appliance permits rapidly deployable virtual infrastructure, which is helpful for installing isolated infrastructure for restricted purposes, and which is also vital to the deployment of both network and application services. This research is a self-sufficient initiative to evaluate the feasibility of setting up virtual routing appliances in a virtual environment. A virtual routing appliance can convey about substantial cost benefits to organizations, especially educational institutions with limited use of physical resources

The limits of ontological critique: from judgmental rationality to justification

The Cambridge Social Ontology (CSO) programme’s inability to generate a meaningful dialogue with mainstream economics is difficult to understand by mere reference to judgmental rationality and without reference to CSO’s ideological configuration. Our paper uses an économie des conventions framework to draw systematic comparisons between CSO’s ideological configuration and the ideological configurations of mainstream economic theories and practice. The resulting analysis helps us to understand not only why CSO generated little response from the mainstream, but also how CSO might renew its critique in ways that might be more likely to produce a response

Studies on the acclimation of commercially cultured Sarotherodon species to sea water

    Get PDF
The initial aims of the present study were to investigate the problems associated with salt water transfer in Sarotherodon spp. with the objective of maintaining high rates of survival and satisfactory growth rates. Members of the euryhaline commercially cultured Sarotherodon species viz. Sarotherodon aureus, S. mossambicus, S. spilurus, S. niloticus and the hybrids of S. aureus/S. niloticus were used. The specific salinity tolerance and the capability of tolerating direct transfers to specified salinities and the comparative abilities of surviving gradual increases of salinity up to full strength sea water were investigated. The involvement of the plasma osmotic concentration in the osmoregulatory process, and the physiological changes following the direct transfer to salt water were examined with special reference to the possibility of using changes of plasma osmotic concentration as an indicator of fish transferability. S. aureus proved to be best able to withstand salinity changes, though in all cases gradual transfer was required to limit mortalities. Feeding of high dietary sodium chloride diet was evaluated for S. mossambicus and S. aureus/S. niloticus hybrids as a method of stimulating osmoregulatory process prior to salt water transfer. This was found to alleviate only slightly the osmotic stress following direct transfer to a known lethal salinity. Water deterioration and temperature fluctuation during fish transportation are inevitable, especially after long journeys. The effects of water quality deterioration, temperature fluctuation and food deprivation, typical of transport conditions, were studied in combination with salinity transfer effects. Effects were significant in all cases though, of the species studied, niloticus appeared to show the highest resistance to the combined effects. Following full acclimation to full strength sea water, the effects of prolonged exposure to sea water on the subsequent survival, growth rates and food conversion were investigated. S. niloticus and the hybrids of S. aureus/S. niloticus were found to be less tolerant to long-term exposure than the other candidates, which were selected for further detailed study. Light and electron microscopic studies of the gills and chloride cells were carried out in S. mossambicus and S. spilurus. This study showed the modified role of the chloride cells in fresh and sea water environments. Increases in number and developments of the ultrastructure of these cells were observed in sea water adapted samples from both of the species. Consequently the significance of the chloride cells in the osmoregulatory process was discussed. The significance of these results was considered in terms of aquaculture practice and suggestions are made for improved transfer methods in this context

Accumulation through derealization: how corporate violence remains unchecked

    Get PDF
This study examines the alleged organization of violence by Coca-Cola through a field study conducted in a village in India. It draws on the works of Judith Butler to show how subaltern groups are derealized and made into ungrievable lives through specific, yet recurrent, practices that keep violence unchecked. Many participants attempt to resist derealization through protest activities that showcase their vulnerability. However, the firm appropriates their claims to vulnerability through a paternalistic discourse that justifies intensified violence and derealization. This research offers insights into accumulation through derealization and on the effects of resistance to it

Testing and Stabilization of Saline Sabkha Soils: A Review

    Get PDF
Sabkha is one of the many types of evaporate regimes that exist around the globe. In addition to being distributed along the coasts, sabkha soils cover a number of continental depressions, both of which usually form in hot, arid climates and are associated with shallow groundwater tables. Sabkhas are well distributed locally and over the whole world. Sabkhas are characterized as being salt-full and water-sensitive soils. The presence of soluble salts makes the use of distilled water in testing these soils, as recommended by ASTM, etc., inappropriate. Further, sabkha soils possess low strength at their natural condition. Therefore, it would be imperative to stabilize the sabkha soil at the actual moisture content in the field. In this paper, the author reviews the modifications on some ASTM standard test methods in order to properly assess the geotechnical properties of sabkha soils. Moreover, two stabilizing programs of sabkha soil using lime and cement at various dosages are presented. The first program was concerned with stabilizing the sabkha at the optimum moisture content, while the second study was devoted to stabilize the sabkha at high (i.e., natural) moisture contents. The results of these studies indicate that sabkha (as a typical evaporitic soil) can be practically used by the construction industry in many field applications

An activity based quality cost and information system

    Get PDF
Many companies are increasing their competitiveness through quality improvement. However, a widely held view among quality practitioners is that companies simply do not know the true total cost of quality, which are mostly hidden among the general overhead of the business. This problem is often attributed to an inappropriate costing system. Thus, any system that assisted companies in identifying and properly quantifying these costs will be valuable. This research, therefore, was aimed at developing a Quality Cost Information System for manufacturing industry, and to show that such a system could provide a basis for analysing quality costs and developing and evaluating the quality improvement process. A literature review of the quality literature highlighted that the major problems that hindered potential users from implementing an effective and efficient Quality Cost system were: current quality cost measurement systems were limited by their inability to trace quality costs to their source; quality was manageable only if it could be measured; quality cost did not easily fit into the traditional cost accounting structure; traditional accounting systems were unlikely to change radically to accommodate proper quality costing. This literature review was complemented by an industrial survey aimed at identifying knowledge of quality costing and current practices in manufacturing industry. The findings of the literature review and industrial survey formed the basis for the remainder of the study. As part of an integrated solution, three approaches have been proposed and detailed: 1) A graphical model of quality costing in the form of a visual tool to facilitate the introduction and communication of a quality costing information system within the organisation. 2) A proposed integration of Activity Based Costing tools with the theory of quality costing to provide a system that can deliver valuable information. 3) A Software tool for the design of Quality Costing Information Systems. The thesis concludes with the major findings and issues raised from the research undertaken. This is followed by recommendations for the successful pursuit of the beneficial implementation of the proposed quality costing system and tools along with several suggestions for further work and future research potential
