Towards The Understanding Of Societal Cultures And Leadership In Non-western Countries: An Exploratory Study On Egypt

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the societal culture in Egypt in relation with leadership attributes. This paper also reported and elaborated on the dimensions of Egypt’s culture using GLOBE categories. When I examined the societal culture using the nine GLOBE dimensions, Egypt appeared to have the lowest score on assertiveness among all the 62 countries, and had relatively lower scores on uncertainty avoidance, societal collectivism, future orientation, and gender egalitarianism. On the other hand, Egypt had the third highest score on in-group collectivism, and had relatively high scores on performance orientation, power distance, and humane orientation. In terms of the desires to change the culture, the data showed that Egyptians are most interested in reducing the power distance and increasing the future orientation aspects of the societal culture

Influence of coatings on energy conservation in construction industry: A case study in the new Egyptian administrative capital

World energy consumption has increased rapidly in the past few years. Due to population growth, total energy consumption is increasing; a large amount of energy is wasted on the cooling and heating processes in buildings. Ho¬wever, using thermal heating management can minimize costs, heat consumption and create a management system for the heat insulation for buildings. This concept is being implemented through different approaches. Based on analysis and research, there is an evidence in the energy consumption before and after testing and applying construction approaches for thermal heating management in building units. This investigation addresses an evaluation of the influence of external coatings on energy consumption. Coatings are considered one of the smart effective available approaches for energy efficiency. Unfortunately, this approach is not widely applied in the construction industry. It needs more data to prove effectiveness and credibility between people to use it as a smart thermal insulation approach. Two precedents have been analyzed in order to monitor buildings’ heat exposure, and how the buildings will be affected by thermal insulation materials. Data sheets from chemical companies which produce similar coatings are compared with the usual products and the protective thermal products. The New Egyptian Administrative Capital is considered the new heart of Egypt, where energy saving concept is taken into consideration from the beginning. This shows that Egypt is also moving towards achieving the concept of energy conservation. The site visits reveal a potential for energy conservation up to 70% using protective coatings; which can be implemented in Egypt. Furthermore, based on interviews with site engineers and the head of operational projects inside the capital, they are open for studying more effective approaches for energy savings, as it is highly needed; especially, in the ministries’ zone

Antagonistic, biofilm-forming rhizospheric Pseudomonas spp. isolated from Hail province

    Get PDF
Background: The objectives of this study were to characterize Pseudomonas rhizospheric strains, that have a biocontrol activity, in rhizosphere soil in Hail province and study their ability to form biofilm. Methods: Rhizosphere soil samples were collected from rhizosphere of soil plantation areas, to be used for bacteria isolation. The identified bacteria were qualitatively tested for their ability to produce slime and subsequently develop biofilm. Results: The cultural and biochemical identification techniques, including morphological, biochemical and molecular methods revealed that the antagonistic bacteria- from the distinctive rhizosphere soil samples belong to Pseudomonas genus in particular, P. aeruginosa (PF1a, pf2a, PF-8) and P. putida (PF-7). These identified isolates inhibited Aspergillus niger development with percentage of parasitic growth inhibition greater than (48.095 ± 2.182)% for P. aeruginosa (pf-8). In addition, these identified isolates were significantly shown to be able to produce exopolysaccharide and subsequently develop biofilm on polystyrene and glass surfaces. Conclusion: Superior strains of these bio-control and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria will enable for better biological control of fungal and bacterial plant diseases and may reduce chemical pesticide usage. The indigenous strains isolated could potentially have a great impact on controlling plant diseases, in particular, those caused by microorganisms, and could be used as an alternative bio control agents instead of harmful chemical pesticides. Most of the tried microbes produced exopolysaccharides as well as formed biofilm on polystyrene and glass surfaces. Keywords: Biological control, Rhizosphere; Biofilm; Pseudomonas; Antimicrobial

Goals System of the Community College in Context of its Role in Local Environment: Applying to Najran Community College

Community colleges' mission, purpose, and their role in the local environment are fundamental issues in today's educational environment. They face an increasingly complex environment that demands reconciling increased social obligations, rapid technological change and, public accountability with the limited resources. Community colleges encounter increasingly aggressive competition from other institutions, they which are threatening the very existence. This current environmental conflict poses a challenge for their survival and growth. Community colleges today claims to follow new philosophies and visions to ensure its survival. Practically speaking, they should rethink their mission, goals, in a way that ensures its survival and growth. To deal with such challenges, this study aimed to present a conceptual framework of goals system of the community college, in the context of the overall interaction with their local environment; then apply this conceptual framework to the Najran Community College. Reporting Identity: Social and Political Implications of Adding a MENA Category to the U.S. Census

The Census Bureau has been testing a new category called MENA for the 2020 census that would better describe the Middle Eastern and North African population in the United States, but in January of 2018, the agency announced that the category requires further research. In this work, I connect the development of a MENA identity category to historical events, sociological theory, current politics and public concerns related to the following questions: What are the social and political implications of including a MENA category on the U.S. census? What does the movement to add a MENA identifier to the census tell us about the conceptualization of Middle Eastern and North African identity in America? To respond to these questions, I conducted in-depth interviews to get the data that cannot be captured by quantitative research methods: how people of Middle Eastern and North African descent experience the task of navigating U.S. standardized race and ethnic categories. As a result of this study, I find that the MENA category is not only a case of correcting outdated racial classification, but also a reflection of social and political issues in our country today, including those of privacy, discrimination, and freedom of expression

The effect of using same language subtitling (SLS) in content comprehension and vocabulary acquisition in Arabic as a foreign language (AFL)

This study investigates the effects of SLS (Same-Language subtitling) on content comprehension and vocabulary acquisition of MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) as L2 at the intermediate level and addresses three research questions: (1) Does SLS enhance or hinder L2 content comprehension when the writing script of L2 is different than that of L1? (2) Does SLS enhance or hinder L2 vocabulary acquisition when the writing script of L2 is different than that of L1? (3) What is students\u27 attitude towards the use of SLS? Twenty seven students of AUC\u27s ALI program with English as L1 were chosen for the study and divided between a control group (without SLS) and a treatment group (with SLS). Instructions concerning the procedure were given in L1 to rule out any false results due to task misinterpretation. Both groups watched an authentic 3:11 minute documentary twice after completing an individual background questionnaire and taking a multiple choice vocabulary pre-viewing test. Post-viewing, participants took the same vocabulary test, then wrote a summary in L1 based on their notes taken during/and in-between the viewings and completed a questionnaire/questions related to their experience with and -/out captions. L1 summaries were analyzed in terms of 23 semantic units related to content comprehension. The degree of vocabulary acquisition was calculated by comparing the responses between the pre- and post-viewing vocabulary multiply choice tests. Results using t-test and one way ANOVA indicate that SLS neither facilitates nor hinders comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. The majority of students enjoyed captions and wanted to continue using them in class. Pedagogical suggestions and future research recommended training with captions and focus on other text- aids, e.g. reverse subtitling at other proficiency levels.
