Search Unemployment and New Economic Geography
This paper develops a general equilibrium geographical economics model which uses matching frictions on the labor market to generate regional unemployment disparities alongside the usual core-periphery pattern of industrial agglomeration. In the model, regional wage differentials do not only influence migration decisions of mobile workers, but also affect the bargaining process on local labor markets, leading to differences in vacancies and unemployment as well. In a setting with two regions, both higher or lower unemployment rates in the core region are possible equilibrium outcomes, depending on transport costs and the elasticity of substitution. Stylized facts suggest that both patterns are of empirical relevance.Regional labor markets; New Economic Geography; job matching; unemployment
The C-Numerical Range in Infinite Dimensions
In infinite dimensions and on the level of trace-class operators rather
than matrices, we show that the closure of the -numerical range is
always star-shaped with respect to the set , where
denotes the essential numerical range of the bounded operator .
Moreover, the closure of is convex if either is normal with
collinear eigenvalues or if is essentially self-adjoint. In the case of
compact normal operators, the -spectrum of is a subset of the
-numerical range, which itself is a subset of the convex hull of the closure
of the -spectrum. This convex hull coincides with the closure of the
-numerical range if, in addition, the eigenvalues of or are
collinear.Comment: 31 pages, no figures; to appear in Linear and Multilinear Algebr
Integrating content-based language learning and intercultural learning online: An international eGrops collaboration
Learning language through content in the tertiary context presents a challenge in that
language teachers, particularly in EAP/ESP contexts, are not necessarily experts in
their studentsâ speciality subject areas, while subject experts might lack language
teaching methodology. Furthermore, intercultural awareness, a key qualification in
todayâs global work environment, tends to take a back seat in a content-based
approach. This paper reports on a didactic concept which integrates subject-based
language learning with intercultural experience through online collaboration in an
international eGroups set-up. The creation of a collaborative learning space aimed to
bring together learners from different cultural contexts (New Zealand and Germany)
and with different target languages (German and English) towards shared learning
outcomes. Data from student interactions will help illustrate to what extent the
eGroups model promoted interactive, communicative and intercultural competence
through content-related bilingual collaboration
Value-oriented process modeling - towards a financial perspective on business process redesign
To date, typical process modeling approaches put a strong emphasis on describing behavioral aspects of business operations. However, they often neglect value-related information. Yet, such information is of key importance to strategic decisionmaking, for instance in the context of process improvement or business engineering. In this paper we propose a valueoriented approach to business process modeling based on key concepts and metrics from operations and financial management. A simple case study suggests that our approach facilitates managerial decision-making in the context of process re-design
CMB and matter power spectra with non-linear dark-sector interactions
An interaction between dark matter and dark energy, proportional to the
product of their energy densities, results in a scaling behavior of the ratio
of these densities with respect to the scale factor of the Robertson-Walker
metric. This gives rise to a class of cosmological models which deviate from
the standard model in an analytically tractable way. In particular, it becomes
possible to quantify the role of potential dark-energy perturbations. We
investigate the impact of this interaction on the structure formation process.
Using the (modified) CAMB code we obtain the CMB spectrum as well as the linear
matter power spectrum. It is shown that the strong degeneracy in the parameter
space present in the background analysis is considerably reduced by considering
\textit{Planck} data. Our analysis is compatible with the CDM model at
the confidence level with a slightly preferred direction of the
energy flow from dark matter to dark energy.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, analysis enlarged, comments and references

A systematic literature review of the use of social media for business process management
In todayâs expansion of new technologies, innovation is found necessary for organizations to be up to date with the latest management trends. Although organizations are increasingly using new technologies, opportunities still exist to achieve the nowadays essential omnichannel management strategy. More precisely, social media are opening a path for benefiting more from an organizationâs process orientation. However, social media strategies are still an under-investigated field, especially when it comes to the research of social media use for the management and improvement of business processes or the internal way of working in organizations. By classifying a variety of articles, this study explores the evolution of social media implementation within the BPM discipline. We also provide avenues for future research and strategic implications for practitioners to use social media more comprehensively
