Heavy Carriers and Non-Drude Optical Conductivity in MnSi
Optical properties of the weakly helimagnetic metal MnSi have been determined
in the photon energy range from 2 meV to 4.5 eV using the combination of
grazing incidence reflectance at 80 degrees (2 meV to 0.8 eV) and ellipsometry
(0.8 to 4.5 eV). As the sample is cooled below 100 K the effective mass becomes
strongly frequency dependent at low frequencies, while the scattering rate
developes a linear frequency dependence. The complex optical conductivity can
be described by the phenomenological relation \sigma(\omega,T) \propto
(\Gamma(T)+i\omega)^{-1/2} used for cuprates and ruthenates.Comment: 5 pages, ReVTeX 4, 5 figures in eps forma
Protein quality as a complementary functional unit in life cycle assessment (LCA)
Goal and theoretical commentary
A number of recent life cycle assessment (LCA) studies have concluded that animal-sourced foods should be restrictedâor even avoidedâwithin the human diet due to their relatively high environmental impacts (particularly those from ruminants) compared with other protein-rich foods (mainly protein-rich plant foods). From a nutritional point of view, however, issues such as broad nutrient bioavailability, amino acid balances, digestibility and even non-protein nutrient density (e.g., micronutrients) need to be accounted for before making such recommendations to the global population. This is especially important given the contribution of animal sourced foods to nutrient adequacy in the global South and vulnerable populations of high-income countries (e.g., children, women of reproductive age and elderly). Often, however, LCAs simplify this reality by using âproteinâ as a functional unit in their models and basing their analyses on generic nutritional requirements. Even if a ânutritional functional unitâ (nFU) is utilised, it is unlikely to consider the complexities of amino acid composition and subsequent protein accretion. The discussion herein focuses on nutritional LCA (nLCA), particularly on the usefulness of nFUs such as âprotein,â and whether protein quality should be considered when adopting the nutrient as an (n)FU. Further, a novel and informative case study is provided to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of protein-quality adjustment.
Case study methods
To complement current discussions, we present an exploratory virtual experiment to determine how Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Scores (DIAAS) might play a role in nLCA development by correcting for amino acid quality and digestibility. DIAAS is a scoring mechanism which considers the limiting indispensable amino acids (IAAs) within an IAA balance of a given food (or meal) and provides a percentage contribution relative to recommended daily intakes for IAA and subsequent protein anabolism; for clarity, we focus only on single food items (4âĂâanimal-based products and 4âĂâplant-based products) in the current case exemplar. Further, we take beef as a sensitivity analysis example (which we particularly recommend when considering IAA complementarity at the meal-level) to elucidate how various cuts of the same intermediary product could affect the interpretation of nLCA results of the end-product(s).
Recommendations
First, we provide a list of suggestions which are intended to (a) assist with deciding whether protein-quality correction is necessary for a specific research question and (b) acknowledge additional uncertainties by providing mitigating opportunities to avoid misinterpretation (or worse, dis-interpretation) of protein-focused nLCA studies. We conclude that as relevant (primary) data availability from supply chain âgatekeepersâ (e.g., international agri-food distributors and processors) becomes more prevalent, detailed consideration of IAA provision of contrasting protein sources needs to be acknowledgedâideally quantitatively with DIAAS being one exampleâin nLCA studies utilising protein as a nFU. We also contend that future nLCA studies should discuss the complementarity of amino acid balances at the meal-level, as a minimum, rather than the product level when assessing protein metabolic responses of consumers. Additionally, a broader set of nutrients should ideally be included when evaluating âprotein-rich foodsâ which provide nutrients that extend beyond amino acids, which is of particular importance when exploring dietary-level nLCA
Optically Thick Radio Cores of Narrow-Waist Bipolar Nebulae
We report our search for optically thick radio cores in sixteen narrow-waist
bipolar nebulae. Optically thick cores are a characteristic signature of
collimated ionized winds. Eleven northern nebulae were observed with the Very
Large Array (VLA) at 1.3 cm and 0.7 cm, and five southern nebulae were observed
with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 6 cm and 3.6 cm. Two
northern objects, 19W32 and M 1-91, and three southern objects, He 2-25, He
2-84 and Mz 3, were found to exhibit a compact radio core with a rising
spectrum consistent with an ionized jet. Such jets have been seen in M 2-9 and
may be responsible for shaping bipolar structure in planetary nebulae.Comment: 29 pages, accepted for publication in Ap
Mean-field driven first-order phase transitions in systems with long-range interactions
We consider a class of spin systems on with vector valued spins
(\bS_x) that interact via the pair-potentials J_{x,y} \bS_x\cdot\bS_y. The
interactions are generally spread-out in the sense that the 's exhibit
either exponential or power-law fall-off. Under the technical condition of
reflection positivity and for sufficiently spread out interactions, we prove
that the model exhibits a first-order phase transition whenever the associated
mean-field theory signals such a transition. As a consequence, e.g., in
dimensions , we can finally provide examples of the 3-state Potts model
with spread-out, exponentially decaying interactions, which undergoes a
first-order phase transition as the temperature varies. Similar transitions are
established in dimensions for power-law decaying interactions and in
high dimensions for next-nearest neighbor couplings. In addition, we also
investigate the limit of infinitely spread-out interactions. Specifically, we
show that once the mean-field theory is in a unique ``state,'' then in any
sequence of translation-invariant Gibbs states various observables converge to
their mean-field values and the states themselves converge to a product

On the asymptotic behavior of the electroweak gauge bosons vacuum polarization functions for arbitrary quark masses
We derive the QCD corrections to the electroweak gauge bosons vacuum
polarization functions at high and zero--momentum transfer in the case of
arbitrary internal quark masses. We then discuss in this general case (i) the
connection between the calculations of the vector bosons
self--energies using dimensional regularization and the one performed via a
dispersive approach and (ii) the QCD corrections to the parameter for a

Full capacitance-matrix effects in driven Josephson-junction arrays
We study the dynamic response to external currents of periodic arrays of
Josephson junctions, in a resistively capacitively shunted junction (RCSJ)
model, including full capacitance-matrix effects}. We define and study three
different models of the capacitance matrix : Model A
includes only mutual capacitances; Model B includes mutual and self
capacitances, leading to exponential screening of the electrostatic fields;
Model C includes a dense matrix that is constructed
approximately from superposition of an exact analytic solution for the
capacitance between two disks of finite radius and thickness. In the latter
case the electrostatic fields decay algebraically. For comparison, we have also
evaluated the full capacitance matrix using the MIT fastcap algorithm, good for
small lattices, as well as a corresponding continuum effective-medium analytic
evaluation of a finite voltage disk inside a zero-potential plane. In all cases
the effective decays algebraically with distance, with
different powers. We have then calculated current voltage characteristics for
DC+AC currents for all models. We find that there are novel giant capacitive
fractional steps in the I-V's for Models B and C, strongly dependent on the
amount of screening involved. We find that these fractional steps are quantized
in units inversely proportional to the lattice sizes and depend on the
properties of . We also show that the capacitive steps
are not related to vortex oscillations but to localized screened phase-locking
of a few rows in the lattice. The possible experimental relevance of these

Biologically active Phytophthora mating hormone prepared by catalytic asymmetric total synthesis
A Phytophthora mating hormone with an array of 1,5-stereogenic centers has been synthesized by using our recently developed methodology of catalytic enantioselective conjugate addition of Grignard reagents. We applied this methodology in a diastereo- and enantioselective iterative route and obtained two of the 16 possible stereoisomers of Phytophthora hormone α1. These synthetic stereoisomers induced the formation of sexual spores (oospores) in A2 mating type strains of three heterothallic Phytophthora species, P. infestans, P. capsici, and P. nicotianae but not in A1 mating type strains. The response was concentration-dependent, and the oospores were viable. These results demonstrate that the biological activity of the synthetic hormone resembles that of the natural hormone α1. Mating hormones are essential components in the sexual life cycle of a variety of organisms. For plant pathogens like Phytophthora, sexual reproduction is important as a source of genetic variation. Moreover, the thick-walled oospores are the most durable propagules that can survive harsh environmental conditions. Sexual reproduction can thus greatly affect disease epidemics. The availability of synthetic compounds mimicking the activity of Phytophthora mating hormone will be instrumental for further unravelling sexual reproduction in this important group of plant pathogens.

Uniqueness of the Trautman--Bondi mass
It is shown that the only functionals, within a natural class, which are
monotonic in time for all solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations admitting
a smooth ``piece'' of conformal null infinity Scri, are those depending on the
metric only through a specific combination of the Bondi `mass aspect' and other
next--to--leading order terms in the metric. Under the extra condition of
passive BMS invariance, the unique such functional (up to a multiplicative
factor) is the Trautman--Bondi energy. It is also shown that this energy
remains well-defined for a wide class of `polyhomogeneous' metrics.Comment: latex, 33 page
