    A formal account of dishonesty

International audienceThis paper provides formal accounts of dishonest attitudes of agents. We introduce a propositional multi-modal logic that can represent an agent's belief and intention as well as communication between agents. Using the language, we formulate different categories of dishonesty. We first provide two different definitions of lies and provide their logical properties. We then consider an incentive behind the act of lying and introduce lying with objectives. We subsequently define bullshit, withholding information and half-truths, and analyze their formal properties. We compare different categories of dishonesty in a systematic manner, and examine their connection to deception. We also propose maxims for dishonest communication that agents should ideally try to satisfy

Traditional and faith-based healthcare in the management of psychotic disorders in Africa:in search for synergy

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes the current literature on the role of traditional and faith-based healthcare in the management of psychotic disorders in Africa.RECENT FINDINGS: In contemporary Africa, individuals with psychosis and traditional and faith healers (TFH) are pluralistic towards their understanding of psychosis and their help-seeking behaviour. Traditional healing is perceived to be helpful to patients with psychotic disorders and their family members and may have a positive influence on the course of psychosis in some selected individuals. Studies show that potentially harmful practices are commonly used by African TFH, but that these are associated with a lack of resources and are susceptible to training. Although various TFH and biomedical practitioners are open to collaboration, the many identified obstacles hinder actual partnerships. However, the few studies that have been conducted on collaborative care for patients with psychotic disorders on the continent, show positive outcomes.SUMMARY: Rather than harmonizing the two healing paradigms, synergistic collaboration between traditional/faith-based and biomedical mental healthcare in the management of individuals with psychosis seems to be possible within certain limits. Synergistic collaboration is more culturally syntonic and may actually contribute to bridging the treatment gap for mental disorders in present-day Africa.</p

Effects of Maturity and Drying Method on the Nutritive Value of Tropical Grasses in Nicaragua

Tropical grasses are key components for both grazing and conserved forages in sustainable livestock systems (beef and dairy) in Central America. The objective of the study was to evaluate grasses used in Nicaragua and their nutritive value contribution as preserved forage during the dry season under different drying methods. Five tropical bunch grasses (Andropogon gayanus, Hyparrheniarufa, Urochloabrizantha, Megathyrsus maximus, and Cenchruspurpureus) were sampled across different farms in Nicaragua in 2014 and 2015 using three replications. Forage samples were collected at 2, 4, 6, and 8-wk maturity as well as season long samples. Samples drying methods included sun- and oven-dried. Sun-dried samples were air dried outdoors for five days while oven-driedused forced air at 55 oC. Samples were analyzed for nutritive value using wet chemistry protocols for crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and in vitro total digestibility (IVTD). Drying methods did not influence CP, ADF, NDF and IVTD concentrations. There were significant differences among grass species in CP levels (P= 0.0003), ADF (P= 0.0009), and IVTD (P= 0.0083). U.brizantha had the greatest CP concentration (79 g/kg) while C. purpureus had the lowest CP (44 g/kg). U. brizantha had the lowest ADF (340 g/kg) concentration. Species A. gayanus, H. rufa, and Megathyrsus maximus had similar NDF concentrations. In vitro total digestibility ranged from 680 to 750 g/kg with M. maximus having the lowest digestibility. Significant differences in forages nutritive value were observed among maturity stages for CP (P\u3c 0.0001), ADF (P= 0.0022), NDF (P= 0.0006), and IVTD (P= 0.0241), but U. brizantha maintained higher CP and IVTD concentrations compared other species, indicating that could be a more preferred species for off-season feeding

The prognosis of oncologic patients in the pediatric intensive care unit

Objective: To evaluate the predicted mortality rate of oncologic patients in the PICU using the PRISM score and factors that might influence short-term outcomes. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Pedriatic ICU in a university hospital. Patients and Methods: The medical charts of all oncologic patients admitted to the PICU during the period from January 1983 to December 1992 were reviewed. Main Results: Over a period of 10 years, 51 oncologic patients were admitted on 57 occasions to the PICU. The mortality was 32%. This is significantly higher than the overall mortality in the PICU (8%). Comparison of observed and predicted mortality, derived from the PRISM score, using chi square goodness-of-fit tests showed a significantly higher observed mortality (χ2(5) = 20.1, P < 0.01). Patients admitted for circulatory failure had the highest mortality (47%), followed by those with respiratory failure due to tachypnea/cyanosis (36%), central nervous system deterioration (27%), respiratory failure due to airway obstruction (25%), and metabolic disorders (20%). Of the 31 patients who needed mechanical ventilation, 17 died (55%), and when they needed inotropic support as well, the mortality increased to 69%. The mortality rose to 100% when the patient was admitted with a septic shock, necessitating mechanical ventilation and inotropic support. The median PRISM score was 5 in the survivor group and 18.5 in the non-survivor group; this difference was found to be significant using the Wilcoxon test (P = 0.01). However, some patients with high scores were found in the survivor group, as well as some with low scores in the non-survivor group. Conclusion: The decision to treat oncologic patients in a PICU remains difficult and has to be considered on an individual basis. However, oncologic patients do benefit from admission to the PICU. The PRISM score is not suitable for oncologic patients in the PICU, because it underestimates the observed mortality. Other factors like neutropenia, septic shock, the need for mechanical ventilation, and inotropic support should be taken into consideration
