    Balanced ternary addition using a gated silicon nanowire

    We demonstrate the proof of principle for a ternary adder using silicon metal-on-insulator single electron transistors (SET). Gate dependent rectifying behavior of a single electron transistor results in a robust three-valued output as a function of the potential of the SET island. Mapping logical, ternary inputs to the three gates controlling the potential of the SET island allows us to perform complex, inherently ternary operations, on a single transistor

    First international ring trial of ELISAs for Salmonella-antibody detection in swine

    An international ring trial for Salmonella-ELISAs for swine serology was organized. Twelve laboratories participated and used in-house ELISAs or commercially available kits. In total 47 well-defined sera from various sources, including inoculation studies with Salmonella-strains from serogroups B, C 1, C2, D, and E I, were tested blindfold. The specificity of most ELISAs was satisfactory, but relatively large differences were found between the sensitivities of the tests. It is concluded that international reference samples should be made available to guarantee a minimum level of sensitivity

    Non-Parametric Learning for Monocular Visual Odometry

    This thesis addresses the problem of incremental localization from visual information, a scenario commonly known as visual odometry. Current visual odometry algorithms are heavily dependent on camera calibration, using a pre-established geometric model to provide the transformation between input (optical flow estimates) and output (vehicle motion estimates) information. A novel approach to visual odometry is proposed in this thesis where the need for camera calibration, or even for a geometric model, is circumvented by the use of machine learning principles and techniques. A non-parametric Bayesian regression technique, the Gaussian Process (GP), is used to elect the most probable transformation function hypothesis from input to output, based on training data collected prior and during navigation. Other than eliminating the need for a geometric model and traditional camera calibration, this approach also allows for scale recovery even in a monocular configuration, and provides a natural treatment of uncertainties due to the probabilistic nature of GPs. Several extensions to the traditional GP framework are introduced and discussed in depth, and they constitute the core of the contributions of this thesis to the machine learning and robotics community. The proposed framework is tested in a wide variety of scenarios, ranging from urban and off-road ground vehicles to unconstrained 3D unmanned aircrafts. The results show a significant improvement over traditional visual odometry algorithms, and also surpass results obtained using other sensors, such as laser scanners and IMUs. The incorporation of these results to a SLAM scenario, using a Exact Sparse Information Filter (ESIF), is shown to decrease global uncertainty by exploiting revisited areas of the environment. Finally, a technique for the automatic segmentation of dynamic objects is presented, as a way to increase the robustness of image information and further improve visual odometry results

    Integrability of a conducting elastic rod in a magnetic field

    We consider the equilibrium equations for a conducting elastic rod placed in a uniform magnetic field, motivated by the problem of electrodynamic space tethers. When expressed in body coordinates the equations are found to sit in a hierarchy of non-canonical Hamiltonian systems involving an increasing number of vector fields. These systems, which include the classical Euler and Kirchhoff rods, are shown to be completely integrable in the case of a transversely isotropic rod; they are in fact generated by a Lax pair. For the magnetic rod this gives a physical interpretation to a previously proposed abstract nine-dimensional integrable system. We use the conserved quantities to reduce the equations to a four-dimensional canonical Hamiltonian system, allowing the geometry of the phase space to be investigated through Poincar\'e sections. In the special case where the force in the rod is aligned with the magnetic field the system turns out to be superintegrable, meaning that the phase space breaks down completely into periodic orbits, corresponding to straight twisted rods.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figur

    Obesity-induced chronic inflammation in C57Bl6J mice, a novel risk factor in the progression of renal AA amyloidosis?

    Background: Compelling evidence links obesity induced systemic inflammation to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This systemic inflammation may result from exacerbated adipose inflammation. Besides the known detrimental effects of typical pro-inflammatory factors secreted by the adipose tissue (TNF-α, MCP-1 and IL-6) on the kidney, we hypothesize the enhanced obesity-induced secretion of serum amyloid A (SAA), an acute inflammatory protein, to play a key role in aggravating obesity-induced CKD. Methods: Groups of male C57Bl/6J mice (n = 99 in total) were fed a low (10% lard) or high (45% lard) fat diet for a maximum of 52 weeks. Mice were sacrificed after 24, 40 and 52 weeks. Whole blood samples, kidneys and adipose tissues were collected. The development of adipose and renal tissue inflammation was assessed on gene expression and protein level. Adipocytokine levels were measured in plasma samples. Results: A distinct inflammatory phenotype was observed in the adipose tissue of HFD mice prior to renal inflammation, which was associated with an early systemic elevation of TNF-α, leptin and SAA (1A-C). With aging, sclerotic lesions appeared in the kidney, the extent of which was severely aggravated by HFD feeding. Lesions exhibited typical amyloid characteristics (2A) and pathological severity positively correlated with bodyweight (2B). Interestingly, more SAA protein was detected in lesions of HFD mice. Conclusion: Our data suggest a causal link between obesity induced chronic inflammation and AA amyloidosis in C57Bl/6J mice. Though future studies are necessary to prove this causal link and to determine its relevance for the human situation, obesity may hence be considered a risk factor for the development and progression of renal AA amyloidosis in the course of CKD.     InP-based two-dimensional photonic crystals filled with polymers

    Polymer filling of the air holes of Indium Phosphide based two-dimensional photonic crystals is reported. After infiltration of the holes with a liquid monomer and solidification of the infill in situ by thermal polymerization, complete filling is proven using scanning electron microscopy. Optical transmission measurements of a filled photonic crystal structure exhibit a redshift of the air band, confirming the complete filling.Comment: To be published in Appl. Phys. Let
