    Spontaneous healing of spontaneous coronary artery dissection

    Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare cause of acute coronary syndrome and sudden cardiac death. It should be suspected in every healthy young woman without cardiac risk factors, especially during the peripartum or postpartum periods. It is important to check for a history of drug abuse, collagen vascular disease or blunt trauma of the chest. Coronary angiography is essential for diagnosis and early management. We wonder whether thrombolysis might aggravate coronary dissection. All types of treatment (medical therapy, percutaneous intervention or surgery) improve the prognosis without affecting survival times if used appropriately according to the clinical stability and the angiographic features of the involved coronary arteries. Prompt recognition and targeted treatment improve outcomes. We report a case of SCAD in a young female free of traditional cardiovascular risk factors, who presented six hours after thrombolysis for ST elevation myocardial infarction. Coronary angiography showed a dissection of the left anterior descending and immediate branch. She had successful coronary artery bypass grafting, with complete healing of left anterior descending dissection. (Cardiol J 2010; 17, 1: 92-95

    This paper describes a classroom experiment on the use of digital technology in initial algebra. Indonesian grade seven students of 12-13 year-old took part in a four session teaching sequence on beginning algebra enriched with digital technology, and in particular applets embedded in the Digital Mathematics Environment. The intervention aimed to improve students’ conceptual understanding and procedural skills in the domain of equations in one variable. The qualitative analysis of written and digital student work, backed up with video observations during the experiment, reveal that the use of digital technology affects student thinking and strategies dealing with equations and with related word problems. Practical and theoretical consequences of the results are discussed

    Tomato chocolàte virus: a new plant virus infecting tomato and a proposed member of the genus Torradovirus

    A new virus was isolated from a tomato plant from Guatemala showing necrotic spots on the bases of the leaves and chocolate-brown patches on the fruits. Structural and molecular analysis showed the virus to be clearly related to but distinct from the recently described Tomato torrado virus (ToTV) and Tomato marchitez virus (ToMarV), both members of the genus Torradovirus. The name tomato chocolàte virus is proposed for this new torradovirus

    The Intra- and Interobserver Agreement on Diagnosis of Dupuytren Disease, Measurements of Severity of Contracture, and Disease Extent

    This agreement study aimed to determine the intra- and interobserver agreement of four variables for diagnosing DD, determining severity of contracture, and disease extent. One of them is a new measurement on the area of nodules and cords, to be able to determine disease extent in early cases without flexion deformities. Intra-observer agreement was slightly higher on average than interobserver agreement. Overall, the intra- and interobserver agreement in diagnosing DD and determining the severity of flexion contracture is high. Also, the newly introduced variable area of nodules and cords has high intra- and interobserver agreement, indicating that it is suitable to measure disease extent

    Disease course of primary Dupuytren’s disease:5-year results of a prospective cohort study

    Background: Predicting progression of Dupuytren disease becomes relevant in an upcoming era with progression-preventing treatment. This study aimed to determine the course of Dupuytren disease and identify factors associated with progression. Methods: Two hundred fifty-eight patients with Dupuytren disease participated in this prospective cohort study, obtaining 17,645 observations in 5 years. Outcomes were disease extent (surface area) and contracture severity (total passive extension deficit). Demographics, lifestyle, health status, exposure to manual work, and genetic risk scores were gathered as potential predictors. Subject-specific, mixed-effects models were used to estimate disease course, and logistic regression with least absolute shrinkage and selection operator was used to evaluate factors associated with the presence of progression. Results: On average, Dupuytren disease was progressive in all finger rays with regard to area [yearly increase, 0.07 cm(2) (95% CI, 0.02 to 0.13 cm(2)) to 0.25 cm(2) (95% CI, 0.11 to 0.39 cm(2))]. Progression in total passive extension deficit was only present on the small finger side [yearly increase, 1.75 degrees (95% CI, 0.30 to 3.20 degrees) to 6.25 degrees (95% CI, 2.81 to 9.69 degrees)]. Stability or regression in area and total passive extension deficit was observed in 11 and 13 percent and 16 and 15 percent (dominant and nondominant hands), respectively. Smoking, cancer, genetic risk score, and hand injury were univariate associated with progression in area, but after multivariate variable selection, none of these associations remained. No predictors for progression in total passive extension deficit were found. Conclusions: Dupuytren disease is progressive, especially with respect to disease extent. Progression in contracture severity is mainly present on the small finger side of the hand. None of the traditional risk and diathesis factors were associated with progression, indicating that new hypotheses about Dupuytren disease progression might be needed.</p

    Embodied learning environments for graphing motion : a systematic literature review

    Embodied learning environments have a substantial share in teaching interventions and research for enhancing learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. In these learning environments, students’ bodily experiences are an essential part of the learning activities and hence, of the learning. In this systematic review, we focused on embodied learning environments supporting students’ understanding of graphing change in the context of modeling motion. Our goal was to deepen the theoretical understanding of what aspects of these embodied learning environments are important for teaching and learning. We specified four embodied configurations by juxtaposing embodied learning environments on the degree of bodily involvement (own and others/objects’ motion) and immediacy (immediate and non-immediate) resulting in four classes of embodied learning environments. Our review included 44 articles (comprising 62 learning environments) and uncovered eight mediating factors, as described by the authors of the reviewed articles: real-world context, multimodality, linking motion to graph, multiple representations, semiotics, student control, attention capturing, and cognitive conflict. Different combinations of mediating factors were identified in each class of embodied learning environments. Additionally, we found that learning environments making use of students’ own motion immediately linked to its representation were most effective in terms of learning outcomes. Implications of this review for future research and the design of embodied learning environments are discussed.publishedVersionPaid Open Acces

    A systematic review and meta-analysis on the prevalence of Dupuytren disease in the general population of Western countries

    Background: Dupuytren disease is a fibroproliferative disease of palmar fascia of the hand. Its prevalence has been the subject of several reviews; however, an accurate description of the prevalence range in the general population—and of the relation between age and disease—is lacking. Methods: Embase and PubMed were searched using database-specific Medical Subject Headings; titles and abstracts were searched for the words Dupuytren, incidence, and prevalence. Two reviewers independently assessed the articles using inclusion and exclusion criteria, and rated the included studies with a quality assessment instrument. In a meta-analysis, the median prevalence, as a function of age by sex, was estimated, accompanied by 95 percent prediction intervals. The observed heterogeneity in prevalence was investigated with respect to study quality and geographic location. Results: Twenty-three of 199 unique identified articles were included. The number of participants ranged from 37 to 97,537, and age ranged from 18 to 100 years. Prevalence varied from 0.6 to 31.6 percent. The quality of studies differed but could not explain the heterogeneity among studies. Mean prevalence was estimated as 12, 21, and 29 percent at ages 55, 65, and 75 years, respectively, based on the relation between age and prevalence determined from 10 studies. Conclusions: The authors describe a prevalence range of Dupuytren disease in the general population of Western countries. The relation between age and prevalence of Dupuytren disease is given according to sex, including 95 percent prediction intervals. It is possible to determine disease prevalence at a certain age for the total population, and for men and women separately

    The integration of digital technology into secondary mathematics education is not yet a widespread success. As teachers are crucial players in this integration, an important challenge is not only to attract early adopters, but also to support mid-adopting teachers in their professional development on this point. The questions addressed in this Chapter are: which practices such mid-adopting teachers develop when starting to use technology in their mathematics classroom; and how these practices change over time while engaging in a project with colleagues and researchers. To answer these questions, theoretical notions of instrumental orchestration, TPACK and community of practice underpin the case study of two mathematics teachers from a group of twelve, who engaged in a project on technology-rich teaching. The data includes lesson observations, blogs and results from questionnaires. The results show the type of teaching practices the teachers develop and the changes in these practices. Even if these changes are modest and the impact of the community is limited, the teachers clearly became more confident in integrating technology in their teaching

    Modelling children's Gear task strategy use with the Dynamic Overlapping Waves Model

    The Dynamic Overlapping Waves Model (DOWM) can model strategy use in problem-solving tasks for strategies that can be construed as developmentally and hierarchically ordered (Boom, 2015). We observed children's (M age = 11 years, SD = 6 months) strategy use during a task in which they had to find the rotation direction of the last gear in a series of connected gear chains, given the rotation direction of the first gear. Using DOWM, we found that strategy use was ordered as expected, from unskilled sensorimotor strategies to abstract strategies, and from less to more efficient in terms of speed and accuracy. This order aligns with the idea that perceptual learning is central to the emergence of abstract conceptual knowledge. Moreover, the current study shows that the DOWM does not preclude forward and backward transitions and even occasional transitions that skip certain strategies in the ordering. The DOWM seems a promising tool to developmentally capture the breadth of behavioral repertoire children display when they adopt new strategies for various problem-solving tasks
