Physical activity and quality of life in older women with a history of depressive symptoms
Physical activity (PA) is positively associated with health-related quality of life (HRQL) in older adults. It is not evident whether this association applies to older adults with poor mental health. This study examined associations between PA and HRQL in older women with a history of depressive symptoms. Participants were 555 Australian women born in 1921–1926 who reported depressive symptoms in 1999 on a postal survey for the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. They completed additional surveys in 2002, 2005 and 2008 that assessed HRQL and weekly minutes walking, in moderate PA, and in vigorous PA. Random effects mixed models were used to examine concurrent and prospective associations between PA and each of 10 HRQL measures (eight SF-36 subscales; two composite scales). In concurrent models, higher levels of PA were associated with better HRQL (p\ua0\ua03 point differences) were evident for physical functioning, general health, vitality and social functioning. For women in their 70s–80s with a history of depressive symptoms, PA is positively associated with HRQL concurrently, and to a lesser extent prospectively. This study extends previous work by showing significant associations in older women with a history of depressive symptoms. Incorporating PA into depression management of older women may improve their HRQL
Too much sitting and all-cause mortality: is there a causal link?
Background: Sedentary behaviours (time spent sitting, with low energy expenditure) are associated with deleterious health outcomes, including all-cause mortality. Whether this association can be considered causal has yet to be established. Using systematic reviews and primary studies from those reviews, we drew upon Bradford Hill's criteria to consider the likelihood that sedentary behaviour in epidemiological studies is likely to be causally related to all-cause (premature) mortality. Methods: Searches for systematic reviews on sedentary behaviours and all-cause mortality yielded 386 records which, when judged against eligibility criteria, left eight reviews (addressing 17 primary studies) for analysis. Exposure measures included self-reported total sitting time, TV viewing time, and screen time. Studies included comparisons of a low-sedentary reference group with several higher sedentary categories, or compared the highest versus lowest sedentary behaviour groups. We employed four Bradford Hill criteria: strength of association, consistency, temporality, and dose-response. Evidence supporting causality at the level of each systematic review and primary study was judged using a traffic light system depicting green for causal evidence, amber for mixed or inconclusive evidence, and red for no evidence for causality (either evidence of no effect or no evidence reported). Results: The eight systematic reviews showed evidence for consistency (7 green) and temporality (6 green), and some evidence for strength of association (4 green). There was no evidence for a dose-response relationship (5 red). Five reviews were rated green overall. Twelve (67 %) of the primary studies were rated green, with evidence for strength and temporality. Conclusions: There is reasonable evidence for a likely causal relationship between sedentary behaviour and all-cause mortality based on the epidemiological criteria of strength of association, consistency of effect, and temporality
Physical activity recommendations from general practitioners in Australia. Results from a national survey
OBJECTIVE: To identify subgroups of Australian adults likely to receive physical activity advice from their general practitioner and to evaluate the content of the advice provided.
METHODS: Participants (n=1,799), recruited from the Australian Health and Social Science panel, completed an online survey. Signal Detection Analysis was used to identify subgroups that were more/less likely to have received physical activity recommendations.
RESULTS: Overall, 18% of participants received a physical activity recommendation from their general practitioner in the past 12 months and eight unique subgroups were identified. The subgroup with the highest proportion (54%) of participants reporting that they received a physical activity recommendation was those with poor physical and mental health-related quality of life and an average daily sitting time of <11 hours. Other subgroups with high proportions of individuals receiving recommendations were characterised by higher weight and/or the presence of co-morbidities. The most commonly prescribed physical activity type was aerobic activity. Few participants received specific physical activity advice.
CONCLUSIONS: General practitioners are incorporating physical activity promotion into their practice, but primarily as a disease management tool and with limited specificity.
IMPLICATIONS: Strategies to assist Australian general practitioners to effectively promote physical activity are needed

Directionality of nuclear recoils in a liquid argon time projection chamber
The direct search for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive
particles (WIMP) is performed by detecting nuclear recoils (NR) produced in a
target material from the WIMP elastic scattering. A promising experimental
strategy for direct dark matter search employs argon dual-phase time projection
chambers (TPC). One of the advantages of the TPC is the capability to detect
both the scintillation and charge signals produced by NRs. Furthermore, the
existence of a drift electric field in the TPC breaks the rotational symmetry:
the angle between the drift field and the momentum of the recoiling nucleus can
potentially affect the charge recombination probability in liquid argon and
then the relative balance between the two signal channels. This fact could make
the detector sensitive to the directionality of the WIMP-induced signal,
enabling unmistakable annual and daily modulation signatures for future
searches aiming for discovery. The Recoil Directionality (ReD) experiment was
designed to probe for such directional sensitivity. The TPC of ReD was
irradiated with neutrons at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, and data
were taken with 72 keV NRs of known recoil directions. The direction-dependent
liquid argon charge recombination model by Cataudella et al. was adopted and a
likelihood statistical analysis was performed, which gave no indications of
significant dependence of the detector response to the recoil direction. The
aspect ratio R of the initial ionization cloud is estimated to be 1.037 +/-

Measurement of isotopic separation of argon with the prototype of the cryogenic distillation plant Aria for dark matter searches
The Aria cryogenic distillation plant, located in Sardinia, Italy, is a key component of the DarkSide-20k experimental program for WIMP dark matter searches at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. Aria is designed to purify the argon, extracted from underground wells in Colorado, USA, and used as the DarkSide-20k target material, to detector-grade quality. In this paper, we report the first measurement of argon isotopic separation by distillation with the 26 m tall Aria prototype. We discuss the measurement of the operating parameters of the column and the observation of the simultaneous separation of the three stable argon isotopes: 36Ar , 38Ar , and 40Ar . We also provide a detailed comparison of the experimental results with commercial process simulation software. This measurement of isotopic separation of argon is a significant achievement for the project, building on the success of the initial demonstration of isotopic separation of nitrogen using the same equipment in 2019
Study on cosmogenic activation above ground for the DarkSide-20k project
The activation of materials due to the exposure to cosmic rays may become an
important background source for experiments investigating rare event phenomena.
DarkSide-20k is a direct detection experiment for galactic dark matter
particles, using a two-phase liquid argon time projection chamber filled with
49.7 tonnes (active mass) of Underground Argon (UAr) depleted in 39Ar. Here,
the cosmogenic activity of relevant long-lived radioisotopes induced in the
argon and other massive components of the set-up has been estimated; production
of 120 t of radiopure UAr is foreseen. The expected exposure above ground and
production rates, either measured or calculated, have been considered. From the
simulated counting rates in the detector due to cosmogenic isotopes, it is
concluded that activation in copper and stainless steel is not problematic.
Activation of titanium, considered in early designs but not used in the final
design, is discussed. The activity of 39Ar induced during extraction,
purification and transport on surface, in baseline conditions, is evaluated to
be 2.8% of the activity measured in UAr from the same source, and thus
considered acceptable. Other products in the UAr such as 37Ar and 3H are shown
to not be relevant due to short half-life and assumed purification methods
