Towards a Flexible, Lightweight Virtualization Alternative

In recent times, two virtualization approaches have become dominant: hardware-level and operating system-level virtualization. They differ by where they draw the virtualization boundary between the virtualizing and the virtualized part of the system, resulting in vastly different properties. We argue that these two approaches are extremes in a continuum, and that boundaries in between the extremes may combine several good properties of both. We propose abstractions to make up one such new virtualization boundary, which combines hardware-level flexibility with OS-level resource sharing. We implement and evaluate a first prototype

Twee pauselijke zegels en de vroege geschiedenis van het cisterciënzer vrouwenklooster Yesse te Haren

Het archeologisch bodemonderzoek dat sinds 2010 op het terrein van het voormalige vrouwenklooster Yesse te Haren plaatsvindt, heeft al verheugend veel informatie opgeleverd. Daarover is in dit Jaarboek al meermalen bericht.1 Ditmaal komt de verrassende ontdekking van een tweetal eminente zegels aan bod. In het voorjaar van 2017 werd een loden zegel (Latijn: bulla) gevonden van paus Gregorius IX (1227-1241) en een jaar later een tweede van diens voorganger Honorius III (1216-1227). Het klooster Yesse werd in 1215-1216 gesticht en deze zegels voeren dus terug naar de eerste kwart eeuw van zijn bestaan. De brieven die met deze bullae waren bekrachtigd, zijn net als alle andere schriftelijke stukken van Yesse tot 1245 verloren gegaan. In deze bijdrage van een mediëvist en een archeoloog worden eerst de beide gevonden zegels nader bekeken. Vervolgens wordt nagegaan wat de inhoud kan zijn geweest van de pauselijke brieven waaraan deze bullae bevestigd waren. Engineering Intelligent Nanosystems for Enhanced Medical Imaging

Medical imaging serves to obtain anatomical and physiological data, supporting medical diagnostics as well as providing therapeutic evaluation and guidance. A variety of contrast agents have been developed to enhance the recorded signals and to provide molecular imaging. However, fast clearance from the body or nonspecific biodistribution often limit their efficiency, constituting challenges that need to be overcome. Nanoparticle-based systems are currently emerging as versatile and highly integrated platforms providing improved circulating times, tissue specificity, high loading capacity for signaling moieties, and multimodal imaging features. Furthermore, nanoengineered devices can be tuned for specific applications and the development of responsive behaviors. Responses include in situ modulation of nanoparticle size, increased intratissue mobility through active propulsion of motorized particles, and active modulation of the particle surroundings such as the extracellular matrix for an improved penetration and retention at the desired locations. Once accumulated in the targeted tissue, smart nanoparticle-based contrast agents can provide molecular sensing of biomarkers or characteristics of the tissue microenvironment. In this case, the signal or contrast provided by the nanosystem is responsive to the presence or concentration of an analyte.
