Geestelijke begeleiding in transitie. Een exploratief onderzoek naar good practices van het vak humanistisch geestelijke begeleiding in het werkveld van de zorg

    Get PDF

Epinephrine and clonidine do not improve intrathecal sufentanil analgesia after total hip replacement†

Background. We compared analgesia after intrathecal sufentanil alone, sufentanil with epinephrine 200µg and sufentanil with clonidine 30 µg in patients after total hip replacement, the endpoints being onset and duration of action. Methods. We performed a randomized double‐blind study of 45 patients for elective total hip arthroplasty using continuous spinal anaesthesia. As soon as a pain score higher than 3 on a 10 cm visual analogue scale was reported, sufentanil 7.5 µg alone, sufentanil 7.5 µg + epinephrine 200 µg or sufentanil 7.5 µg + clonidine 30 µg in 2 ml normal saline was given intrathecally. Pain scores, rescue analgesia (diclofenac and morphine) and adverse effects (respiratory depression, postoperative nausea and vomiting, itching) were observed for 24h after surgery. Results. Time to a pain score of 3 [281 (36) vs 288 (23) vs 305 (30) min] were similar in all three groups. Adverse effects and analgesic requirements during the first 24h were also similar. Conclusion. After total hip replacement, all three analgesic regimens gave good analgesia with comparable onset and duration of action, and minor adverse effects. Br J Anaesth 2002; 89: 562-

Experience of aging in patients with rheumatic disease: A comparison with the general population

    Get PDF
Objectives: Self-perceptions of aging have been shown to predict mental and physical health and even longevity. This study examined the aging perceptions of patients with rheumatic disease and compared them with the general Dutch population.\ud \ud Methods: Consecutive patients visiting a rheumatology clinic completed the Personal Experience of Aging Scale (PEAS) subscales: physical decline, social loss, continuous growth, and two sentence stems from the SELE instrument (What I like/do not like about getting older …) as qualitative measures of the subjective experience of aging. A representative sample from the general Dutch population between 40 and 85 years was used as a comparison group. Participants included in this study were 208 patients with a rheumatic disease and 975 persons from the Dutch Aging Survey (DAS).\ud \ud Results: Both quantitative and qualitative data showed that patients perceived aging more strongly as physical decline. These negative experiences did not extend to social and psychological domains of aging. Age-group comparisons revealed that patients in middle adulthood experienced physical aging similar to older people without a rheumatic disease.\ud \ud Conclusion: The negative experience of aging in patients is limited to the physical domain and does not extend to other domains of life. The negative experience of physical aging even in middle-aged groups warrants further studies on its effects on mental and physical health outcomes and health behavior in patients with rheumatic disease

Calls and vocal behaviour of the Black Falcon Falco subniger

Some calls of the Black Falcon Falco subniger (adult female cackle calls and begging whines, adult male creaking call) are described and illustrated, together with quantification of calling rates of both sexes at four active nests near Tamworth, NSW. Females were more vocal than males at all stages of the breeding cycle. Black Falcon cackle calls are similar to those of the Peregrine Falcon F. peregrinus, although more guttural owing to a lower fundamental frequency of ~1 kHz in females, compared with ~2 kHz in female Peregrine Falcons. The Black Falcon is less vocal than the Peregrine, and breeding males use the whining call much less frequently than do Peregrine males

Central factorials under the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform of polynomials

We show that slight modifications of the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform lead to an automorphism of the vector space of polynomials. This circumstance along with the Mellin transformation property of the modified Bessel functions perform the passage of monomials to central factorial polynomials. A special attention is driven to the polynomial sequences whose KL-transform is the canonical sequence, which will be fully characterized. Finally, new identities between the central factorials and the Euler polynomials are found.Comment: also available at http://cmup.fc.up.pt/cmup/ since the 2nd August 201
