Good\u27 Language Learner Characteristics Among Japanese University Students : A Case Study of Two Classes

この稿で筆者は､ある日本の大学における上級ｸﾗｽと基礎ｸﾗｽで使用される学習ｽﾄﾗﾃｼﾞｰの比較を行なっている｡この目的は､｢優れた言語学習者｣に関するﾙｰﾋﾞﾝの分析を論拠とし､2つのｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟを分けている特徴とは､何であるのかを明らかにすることである｡この2つのｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟの間の学習ｽﾄﾗﾃｼﾞｰには､統計的に有意な差があるという結果が出た｡この結果を基に､両方のｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟの学生が外国語学習者として､どのようにしたら上達できるのかについて論じている｡In this paper, the author compares the learning strategies used by one upper-level and one lower-level English class at a Japanese university. Using Rubin\u27s profile of the‘good\u27language learner as a basis, the objective was to determine which characteristics separated the two groups. The results indicated statistically significant differences between the two groups. The implications for how students of both groups could improve as language learners are discussed

An Evaluation of a Scoring Rubric in the Foreign Language Classroom

本研究では､日本のある大学の外国語の授業におけるﾎﾟｽﾀｰ発表ﾌﾟﾛｼﾞｪｸﾄのためのﾙｰﾌﾞﾘｯｸ使用に対する学生の見解を調査する｡筆者は次の項目に関して質問調査を実施した｡1)どの程度学生がﾌﾟﾛｼﾞｪｸﾄの準備段階でﾙｰﾌﾞﾘｯｸを参照したか､2)発表のためのﾂｰﾙとしてﾙｰﾌﾞﾘｯｸはどれくらい学生の手助けとなったか､3)発表についての効果的なﾌｨｰﾄﾞﾊﾞｯｸを提供してくれるﾂｰﾙとして､ﾙｰﾌﾞﾘｯｸはどれくらい学生の手助けとなったか｡結果としては､前もってﾙｰﾌﾞﾘｯｸが提示されていたにもかかわらず､3分の1の学生がﾌﾟﾛｼﾞｪｸﾄの準備の際に､ﾙｰﾌﾞﾘｯｸを参照していなかった｡しかしながら､学生の反応からは､ﾙｰﾌﾞﾘｯｸはﾌﾟﾛｼﾞｪｸﾄの準備の際に役に立ったと考えられるのではないかということを示唆している｡本稿では､外国語の授業でﾙｰﾌﾞﾘｯｸを使用することの意義を議論していく｡This study examines students\u27views toward the use of rubrics for a poster presentation project in a foreign language classroom at a Japanese university. The author examined the following questions: 1)to what extent did students consult the rubric during the preparation stage of the project? 2)how helpful did students find the rubric as a tool for preparation? 3)how helpful did students find the rubric as a tool for providing feedback on performance? The results indicate that, despite being presented with the rubric in advance, 1/3 of students did not consult it when preparing their projects. Nevertheless, student responses suggest that rubrics were deemed to be helpful in preparing for the project and in providing effective feedback afterward. Implications for using rubrics in the foreign language classroom are discussed

The Power and Pedagogy of Quotations : Using a Political News Story in an EFL Classroom

小論では外国語として英語を学ぶ学生が､政治的なﾆｭｰｽ記事におけるﾒﾃﾞｨｱ･ｱｸｾｽ‘media access\u27 を評価する方法について調査した｡まず始めに､ﾒﾃﾞｨｱの重点やﾒﾃﾞｨｱ･ｱｸｾｽのﾎﾟｲﾝﾄとして､引用箇所がどのような役割を果たしているのかについて論じた｡その後､学生に実際のﾆｭｰｽ記事を読ませる活動についての考察を行った｡授業では､学生はﾆｭｰｽ記事を取り上げるﾌﾟﾗﾝを作成し､それをもとに､同じﾃｰﾏを扱った実際のﾆｭｰｽ記事を評価する｡日本人大学生の標準ﾚﾍﾞﾙｸﾗｽで書かせたｺﾒﾝﾄから､学生達は実際のﾆｭｰｽ記事におけるﾒﾃﾞｨｱ･ｱｸｾｽを評価できるという結果が得られた｡そして､外国語としての英語教育における新聞記事利用の多様な可能性について示唆した｡This paper investigates one way of critically evaluating media access in a political news story with students studying English as a foreign language. The paper begins by examining how quotations act as the locus of media values and media access in the story. This is followed by a discussion of activities designed to help students engage with the authentic news story. The process in class involved students planning their own news stories then using these as a basis from which to critique the authentic news story of the same subject. Results drawn from the writing samples of a high-beginner Japanese university class indicate that students were able to evaluate media access from the authentic news source. Furthermore, implications for the use of political news stories in the foreign language classroom will be discussed

Systemic Functional Grammar and Teaching English as a Foreign Language : An Analysis of Three Cooking Texts

選択体系機能文法(SFG)は､使用ｺﾝﾃｸｽﾄ内の理解と当該ﾃｷｽﾄのｺﾐｭﾆｹｰｼｮﾝ効果の評価に対する深い見識を提供してくれる｡このような見識を活かせる場面として､外国語学習のための教室がある｡この稿では､まず筆者は選択体系機能文法の枠組みを用いて､ｸｯｷﾝｸﾞに関する3つのﾃｷｽﾄの検証を行う｡次に､外国語教授用教材として､そのﾃｷｽﾄを使用することの影響について議論する｡これらの議論より､このようなﾃｷｽﾄを､教師が授業でどのように活用することができるのか､その方法を提示する｡Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG)provides insights into understanding and evaluating the effectiveness of texts within their context of use. One area of application for SFG is the foreign language classroom. In this paper, the author utilizes the systemic functional framework to examine three texts related to cooking. Following this, implications for using the texts as foreign language teaching materials are discussed. The findings suggest ways that SFG can help teachers to better understand how authentic texts can be utilized in the classroom
