European blues : blue services in a European perspective

Land owners who offer blue services make their land available for activities such as water conservation, peak-flow storage or the containment of the rise of the groundwater level, and receive payments that exceed the compensation for incurred costs. The Netherlands is a pioneer in the concept of blue services, but other European countries may also offer possibilities for such activities. There are a number of institutional factors that either hamper or stimulate the realisation of blue services. The factors this study focuses on are, for example, the land price, transaction costs, property rights and the underlying policy rules on several administrative levels. Subsequent to a description of different factors, this study presents case studies of the United Kingdom, Hungary and Germany (the Dinkel river) in which the factors are evaluated according to their contribution to the realisation of blue services. When orders of worth clash: Negotiating legitimacy in situations of moral multiplexity

How is moral legitimacy established in pluralist contexts where multiple moral frameworks co-exist and compete? Situations of moral multiplexity complicate not only whether an organization or practice is legitimate but also which criteria should be used to establish moral legitimacy. We argue that moral legitimacy can be thought of as the property of a dynamic dialogical process in which relations between moral schemes are constantly (re-)negotiated through dynamic exchange with audiences. Drawing on Boltanski and Thévenot's 'orders of worth' framework, we propose a process model of how three types of truces may be negotiated: transcendence, compromise, antagonism. While each can create moral legitimacy in pluralistic contexts, legitimacy is not a binary variable but varying in degrees of scope and certainty

Delaunay triangulations on the word RAM: towards a practical worst-case optimal algorithm

The Delaunay triangulation of n points in the plane can be constructed in o(n log n) time when the coordinates of the points are integers from a restricted range. However, algorithms that are known to achieve such running times had not been implemented so far. We explore ways to obtain a practical algorithm for Delaunay triangulations in the plane that runs in linear time for small integers. For this, we first implement and evaluate variants of an algorithm, BrioDC, that is known to achieve this bound. We find that our implementations of these algorithms are competitive with fast existing algorithms. Secondly, we implement and evaluate variants of an algorithm, BRIO, that runs fast in experiments. Our variants aim to avoid bad worst-case behavior and our squarified orders indeed provide faster point location

Vestigingssteun voor bedrijfsopvolgers in de agrarische sector : een analyse van drie mogelijke varianten

In dit rapport is voor drie varianten van vestigingssteun het effect op de financiële positie na de bedrijfsovername onderzocht. De financiële positie na bedrijfsovername is zeer verschillend tussen bedrijven. Deze uitgangssituatie na overname is van essentieel belang voor de levensvatbaarheid. Voor de analyse van de drie varianten is een rekenmodel gemaakt. Van de drie varianten komt de variant zoals die door het Nederlands Agrarisch Jongeren Kontakt is voorgesteld het beste naar voren: het 'Next Generation Fund'. De opvolger ontvangt bij bedrijfsovername 50.000 gulden, die na 10 jaar moet worden terugbetaald. Dit is met name gunstig voor de liquiditeitspositie van de opvolger. Het effect van vestigingssteun op de levensvatbaarheid valt in het niet vergeleken met de effecten van de verschillen in uitgangssituatie

Silica nanowires templated by amyloid-like fibrils

Many peptides self-assemble to form amyloid fibrils. We previously explored the sequence propensity to form amyloid using variants of a designed peptide with sequence KFFEAAAKKFFE. These variant peptides form highly stable amyloid fibrils with varied lateral assembly and are ideal to template further assembly of non-proteinaceous material. Herein, we show that the fibrils formed by peptide variants can be coated with a layer of silica to produce silica nanowires using tetraethyl-orthosilicate. The resulting nanowires were characterized using electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray fiber diffraction, FTIR and cross-section EM to reveal a nanostructure with peptidic core. Lysine residues play a role in templating the formation of silica on the fibril surface and, using this library of peptides, we have explored the contributions of lysine as well as arginine to silica templating, and find that sequence plays an important role in determining the physical nature and structure of the resulting nanowires

From Values to Value: The Commensuration of Sustainability Reporting and the Crowding Out of Morality

Drawing on extensive case study evidence, this study unpacks sustainability reporting’s evolution from a moral values-based practice towards a financialized value-based one. We argue that this transition can be seen as a commensuration project. We examine the dynamics of this process and its implications for sustainability related outcomes. We find that increased levels of commensuration have moved sustainability reporting away from an original emphasis on morality and values to a focus on strategic value creation for the firm. We theorize this process as a ‘crowding out of morality’ that is enabled by a rigid cognitive framing of social and environmental issues (objectification) and the monetized coordination of relevant social interactions (marketization). We outline implications of our analysis for the scholarly debates on the institutionalization of sustainability reporting and commensuration

Kosten voor habitattypen in Natura 2000-gebieden : toepassing van de methode Kosteneffectiviteit natuurbeleid

Deze studie beschrijft de berekening van de kosten voor het natuurbeleid in de Natura 2000-gebieden, gebaseerd op de aanwezige habitattypen. De kosten zijn afgeleid van het benodigde beheer en de milieutekorten rond vermesting en verdroging. De ligging van de habitattypen is bepaald op basis van het koppelingsbestand ´ecotopen en habitattypen´ en op basis van de stikstofdepositie. In totaal gaat het om een areaal van 56.922 ha. De gemiddelde kosten voor het realiseren van de habitattypen liggen bij 800 euro/ha/jaar, variërend van ruim 100 euro/ha/jaar in Groningen tot 3.250 euro/ha/jaar in Utrecht. Door een andere manier van toewijzing van de habitattypen verschillen de in de huidige studie berekende kosten en arealen met milieutekorten van die uit de eerdere studie naar de kosten van de Natura 2000-gebieden

Natuurkosten: Deel 1. Definities en de berekeningsmethodiek vanuit bedrijfseconomisch perspectief.

Het doel van dit onderzoek is het ontwikkelen van een methodiek natuurkosten en is een vervolg op 'Natuurkostenmethodologie, Inventarisatie van discussiepunten'. Deze metho-diek kent een bedrijfseconomisch perspectief: de primaire nettokosten en is ontwikkeld voor de monitoring van de natuurkosten. Voor monitoring is het van belang dat tegen rela-tief geringe kosten en met een hoge betrouwbaarheid de kosten kunnen worden bepaald. Daarom is voor primaire nettokosten gekozen. Methodieken met andere (economische) uit-gangspunten kunnen een groot deel van deze methodiek overnemen. Ze hoeven zich dan alleen te concentreren op de afwijkingen in economische zin en niet opnieuw het natuurbe-grip af te bakenen

Groenblauwe diensten naar een hoger peil

Dit rapport beschrijft de institutionele mogelijkheden van de groenblauwe dienst 'peilverhoging'; hierbij geldt de Europese staatssteuntoets als een belangrijke randvoorwaarde. Er is ook nagegaan welke financieringsbronnen en betalingsgrondslagen voor deze groenblauwe dienst mogelijk zijn. This report describes the institutional possibilities for the greenblue service 'raising the water level', with the European state aid test as an important preliminary condition. The sources of finance and the foundations for payment have been examined for this greenblue service
