    The Gamow-Teller Resonance in Finite Nuclei in the Relativistic Random Phase Approximation

    Gamow-Teller(GT) resonances in finite nuclei are studied in a fully consistent relativistic random phase approximation (RPA) framework. A relativistic form of the Landau-Migdal contact interaction in the spin-isospin channel is adopted. This choice ensures that the GT excitation energy in nuclear matter is correctly reproduced in the non-relativistic limit. The GT response functions of doubly magic nuclei 48^{48}Ca, 90^{90}Zr and 208^{208}Pb are calculated using the parameter set NL3 and g0′g_0'=0.6 . It is found that effects related to Dirac sea states account for a reduction of 6-7 % in the GT sum rule.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur

    Lost and found : resilience approaches that helped the Vietnamese residents of Biloxi, Mississippi in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

    Vietnamese American residents of Biloxi, Mississippi were impacted heavily by Hurricane Katrina; many are still recovering from the losses caused by the storm. Stories in the news media and academia have discussed the strengths and resilience in the Vietnamese communities post Hurricane Katrina. However, no authors discuss in detail the resilience factors that helped the survivors. The purpose of this study is to use post-Hurricane Katrina as an exemplar to understand the experience of the Vietnamese community in Biloxi, Mississippi. The researcher intended to explore the protective factors that survivors use to help rebuild their lives. The study used existing data from the research project that I participated in and examined literature on the experiences of the Vietnamese Americans to assist in identifying the protective factors. Theories of resilience included individual, family and community and are explored to understand the sources of these protective factors. This study found that the resilience theories mentioned in this paper help to understand the resilience experiences of Vietnamese American survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Resilience assessment (LINC) utilizes the mapping process to evaluate the individuals\u27, families\u27 and communities\u27 strengths. This researcher found that focusing on strength capacities builds culture-appropriate and effective intervention when working with the Vietnamese American hurricane survivors

    Joint Deep Modeling of Users and Items Using Reviews for Recommendation

    A large amount of information exists in reviews written by users. This source of information has been ignored by most of the current recommender systems while it can potentially alleviate the sparsity problem and improve the quality of recommendations. In this paper, we present a deep model to learn item properties and user behaviors jointly from review text. The proposed model, named Deep Cooperative Neural Networks (DeepCoNN), consists of two parallel neural networks coupled in the last layers. One of the networks focuses on learning user behaviors exploiting reviews written by the user, and the other one learns item properties from the reviews written for the item. A shared layer is introduced on the top to couple these two networks together. The shared layer enables latent factors learned for users and items to interact with each other in a manner similar to factorization machine techniques. Experimental results demonstrate that DeepCoNN significantly outperforms all baseline recommender systems on a variety of datasets.Comment: WSDM 201

    Motion in a rocked ratchet with spatially periodic friction

    We present a detailed study of the transport and energetics of a Brownian particle moving in a periodic potential in the presence of an adiabatic external periodic drive. The particle is considered to move in a medium with periodic space dependent friction with the same periodicity as that of the potential but with a phase lag. We obtain several results, most of them arising due to the medium being inhomogeneous and are sensitive to the phase lag. When the potential is symmetric we show that efficiency of energy transduction can be maximised as a function of noise strength or temperature. However, in the case of asymmtertic potential the temperature may or may not facilitate the energy conversion but current reversals can be obtained as a function of temperature and the amplitude of the periodic drive.
