Quasi-dark Mode in a Metamaterial for Analogous Electromagnetically-induced Transparency
We study a planar metamaterial supporting electromagnetically-induced
transparency (EIT)-like effect by exploiting the coupling between bright and
quasi-dark eigenmodes. The specific design of such a metamaterial consists of a
cut-wire (CW) and a single-gap split-ring resonator (SRR). From the numerical
and the analytical results we demonstrate that the response of SRR, which is
weakly excited by external electric field, is mitigated to be a quasi-dark
eigenmode in the presence of strongly radiative CW. This result suggests more
relaxed conditions for the realization of devices utilizing the EIT-like
effects in metamaterial, and thereby widens the possibilities for many

LHC Benchmarks from Flavored Gauge Mediation
We present benchmark points for LHC searches from flavored gauge mediation
models, in which messenger-matter couplings give flavor-dependent squark
masses. Our examples include spectra in which a single squark - stop, scharm,
or sup - is much lighter than all other colored superpartners, motivating
improved quark flavor tagging at the LHC. Many examples feature flavor mixing;
in particular, large stop-scharm mixing is possible. The correct Higgs mass is
obtained in some examples by virtue of the large stop A-term. We also revisit
the general flavor and CP structure of the models. Even though the A-terms can
be substantial, their contributions to EDM's are very suppressed, because of
the particular dependence of the A-terms on the messenger coupling. This holds
regardless of the messenger-coupling texture. More generally, the special
structure of the soft terms often leads to stronger suppression of flavor- and

Chiral symmetry breaking in a uniform external magnetic field II. Symmetry restoration at high temperatures and chemical potentials
Chiral symmetry is dynamically broken in quenched, ladder QED at weak gauge
couplings when an external magnetic field is present. In this paper, we show
that chiral symmetry is restored above a critical chemical potential and the
corresponding phase transition is of first order. In contrast, the chiral
symmetry restoration at high temperatures (and at zero chemical potential) is a

Fluorine in a Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor Star
The fluorine abundance of the Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) star HE
1305+0132 has been derived by analysis of the molecular HF (1-0) R9 line at
2.3357 microns in a high-resolution (R = 50,000) spectrum obtained with the
Phoenix spectrometer and Gemini-South telescope. Our abundance analysis makes
use of a CNO-enhanced ATLAS12 model atmosphere characterized by a metallicity
and CNO enhancements determined utilizing medium-resolution (R = 3,000) optical
and near-IR spectra. The effective iron abundance is found to be [Fe/H] = -2.5,
making HE 1305+0132 the most Fe-deficient star, by more than an order of
magnitude, for which the abundance of fluorine has been measured. Using
spectral synthesis, we derive a super-solar fluorine abundance of A(19F) = 4.96
+/- 0.21, corresponding to a relative abundance of [F/Fe] = 2.90. A single line
of the Phillips C_2 system is identified in our Phoenix spectrum, and along
with multiple lines of the first-overtone vibration-rotation CO (3-1) band
head, C and O abundances of A(12C) = 8.57 +/- 0.11 and A(16O) = 7.04 +/- 0.14
are derived. We consider the striking fluorine overabundance in the framework
of the nucleosynthetic processes thought to be responsible for the
C-enhancement of CEMP stars and conclude that the atmosphere of HE 1305+0132
was polluted via mass transfer by a primary companion during its asymptotic
giant branch phase. This is the first study of fluorine in a CEMP star, and it
demonstrates that this rare nuclide can be a key diagnostic of nucleosynthetic

Meson twist-4 parton distributions in terms of twist-2 distribution amplitudes at large Nc
We show that in the large N_c limit four-quark twist-4 distributions in the
pion can be expressed in terms of twist-2 pion distribution amplitude. This
allows us to compute the isospin-2 structure function of the pion
F_2^{I=2}(x_B) in the large N_c limit. The method can be easily applied to

Stable fourfold configurations for small vacancy clusters in silicon from ab initio calculations
Using density-functional-theory calculations, we have identified new stable
configurations for tri-, tetra-, and penta-vacancies in silicon. These new
configurations consist of combinations of a ring-hexavacancy with three, two,
or one interstitial atoms, respectively, such that all atoms remain fourfold.
As a result, their formation energies are lower by 0.6, 1.0, and 0.6 eV,
respectively, than the ``part of a hexagonal ring'' configurations, believed up
to now to be the lowest-energy states
The Gluon Spin in the Chiral Bag Model
We study the gluon polarization contribution at the quark model
renormalization scale to the proton spin, , in the chiral bag model. It
is evaluated by taking the expectation value of the forward matrix element of a
local gluon operator in the axial gauge . It is shown that the confining
boundary condition for the color electric field plays an important role. When a
solution satisfying the boundary condition for the color electric field, which
is not the conventionally used but which we favor, is used, the has a
positive value for {\it all} bag radii and its magnitude is comparable to the
quark spin polarization. This results in a significant reduction in the
relative fraction of the proton spin carried by the quark spin, which is
consistent with the small flavor singlet axial current measured in the EMC
