Traumatic brain injury and the transition to college

Eight college students who experienced a traumatic brain injury were interviewed regarding their college transition experience. Students identified either parents, teachers, or school counselors as beneficial with helping them transition to college. The interest of the study was to obtain information to help school psychologists help students who have experienced a traumatic brain injury transition to college. Participants acknowledged that college level course work required them to be significantly more independent and the content of the material was more demanding than high school. Concerning neurological symptoms, it was indicated that participants experienced difficulty sustaining attention, utilizing their short-term memory, and possessing adequate time-management skills. In the area of executive functioning challenges, students stated that after their injury they experienced a shortened attention span, especially while in a classroom setting. Additionally, the majority of students withdrew from socially stimulating situations and experienced challenges regulating their emotions. With regards to fatigue, the majority of participants reported that they experienced difficulty with sleeping and overall felt fatigued while recovering from their injury. Concerning accommodations, only two participants receive formal accommodations from the Office of Disability services at JMU

The English and German translation traditions of Boethius’s "De consolatione philosophiae"

This article provides a full listing of all known translation of Boethius’s De consolation philosophiae into English and German. The two listings are part of a larger project that eventually will inventory all vernacular translations of the Consolatio, world-wide. The article indicates some of the comparable and contrasting aspects of the English and German translation traditions. The inventories of translations in each of these two large traditions has developed slowly, over the last century or so, as more past translations are discovered, and as new translations continue to be produced. Such comparable and contrasting aspects of the traditions reveal the interconnectedness between the translations within each tradition and the interconnectedness between the two traditions. This article suggests that studies of these two traditions will yield important scholarly information as studies of the translations and translation traditions proceed

Estimating the heterogeneous relationship between peer drinking and youth alcohol consumption in Chile using propensity score stratification

When estimating the association between peer and youth alcohol consumption, it is critical to account for possible differential levels of response to peer socialization processes across youth, in addition to variability in individual, family, and social factors. Failure to account for intrinsic differences in youth's response to peers may pose a threat of selection bias. To address this issue, we used a propensity score stratification method to examine whether the size of the association between peer and youth drinking is contingent upon differential predicted probabilities of associating with alcohol-consuming friends. Analyzing a Chilean youth sample (N = 914) of substance use, we found that youths are susceptible to the detrimental role of peer drinkers, but the harmful relationship with one's own drinking behavior may be exacerbated among youth who already have a high probability of socializing with peers who drink. In other words, computing a single weighted-average estimate for peer drinking would have underestimated the detrimental role of peers, particularly among at-risk youths, and overestimated the role of drinking peers among youths who are less susceptible to peer socialization processes. Heterogeneous patterns in the association between peer and youth drinking may shed light on social policies that target at-risk youths.We are extremely grateful to the youth and their families in Santiago, Chile for taking the time to participate in this study. Losing It's Religion

This paper makes the claim that planning is fueled by the same optimistic faith in human reason as the modern sciences generally. At times, this faith takes on the contours of a religion. The excesses of urban renewal projects challenged the core of this faith, however, serving as planning’s reformation. Planning remains heavily indebted to its central tenets. Science remains the lodestar, but this is placed in dynamic tension with an effort at making decisions that comport with the public interest, which is difficult if not impossible to measure via the tools of science. Examining the factor structure of anxiety and depression symptom items among adolescents in Santiago, Chile

The co-occurrence of emotional disorders among adolescents has received considerable empirical attention. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of co-occurring anxiety and depression by examining the factor structure of the Youth Self-Report used with a sample of low-income adolescents from Santiago, Chile. Data from two independent, randomly selected subsamples were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Results indicate the best fit for the data is a two-factor model of anxiety and depression symptoms, which factors anxiety and depression into separate latent constructs. Because the findings show that anxiety and depression are not measured by the same factor in this international sample, the results imply that a valid and useful distinction exists between these constructs. That these constructs are found to be separate factors suggests that anxiety and depression may have separate etiologies and consequences, which might be best addressed by separate intervention components.
