Emotional Reflexivity in Contemporary Friendships: Understanding It Using Elias and Facebook Etiquette

    Get PDF
The popular social networking site Facebook has become a part of millions of people\'s everyday lives. In order to help people navigate the friendships they form and maintain on Facebook there are many websites offering advice about etiquette. This advice, and responses to it, can help reveal how contemporary emotional expression is organised, especially as it relates to friendship. This paper critically adapts the approach of other sociologists such as Norbert Elias, and Cas Wouters who have used etiquette and advice books to explore social changes in emotionality. Using online advice about Facebook etiquette, it is argued that there is uncertainty about the degree of emotional closeness appropriate for friendships in contemporary life, especially where there are status differences. It is difficult to know how to feel and how to behave within the relational complexity of contemporary life. In particular, expanded definitions of friendship form part of this complexity which promotes and requires an \'emotionalization of reflexivity\'.Emotion, Friendship, Elias, Manners, Facebook, Reflexivity

Professional development is becoming a necessary component in supporting higher education administrators as leadership roles continue to evolve since the pandemic. Employees desire more from their leaders than direction. They want a leader who is empathetic and who creates collaboration in a more inclusive and trusting environment while supporting their wellbeing. This session provides an overview of how training on the Core Competencies of Coaching can support leaders in developing the skills necessary for creating a positive working environment. Topics for higher education administrators include creating trust, understanding Emotional Intelligence, effective communication and enhancing student engagement

Effects of New Financial Products on The Performance Of Selected Commercial Banks In Nigeria

    Get PDF
The study examines effects of introduction of new financial services on the performance indicators of deposits, Profit and sales volume of selected commercial banks in Nigeria. A number of seven (7) commercial banks were selected through purposive sampling technique while questionnaire was administered on some 400 respondents, both staff and customers, selected through random sampling method. Both descriptive and inferential statistical tools of frequencies, ratios, percentages and regression analyses, were used in analyzing the data. Findings revealed that introduction of new financial services accounted for 65.9% growth of customer deposits, 54.5% growth in gross earnings, and while to profit, it was just 35.4%.This was not an adequate reflection of the tremendous growth in the profit declared by banks. Thus, Introduction of new finances designed as customer support services are very vital to improve performance of commercial banks. Are your occupational safety and health (OSH) management systems powered with Relational Database Management Technology (RDMT) or equivalent technology? That is, do they share OSH compliance management data relationally within and between multiple programs? In the previous two issues of Journal of System Safety, I introduced two important aspects of effective occupational safety and health (OSH) management systems (MS): Content: i.e., they are built on Federal regulations and official guidelines only Structure: i.e. they manage multiple programs based on or similar to the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model of “continuous improvement.

11–23% Cr steels for solid oxide fuel cell interconnect applications at 800 \ub0C – How the coating determines oxidation kinetics

    Get PDF
The present work investigates the low-cost steels AISI 441, AISI 430, and AISI 444 against the tailor-made high Cr steel Crofer 22 APU (22.9 wt% Cr) at 800 \ub0C in simulated solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathode conditions. Furthermore, a low Cr steel, AISI 409 (11.4 wt% Cr) is included in the study. The oxidation, chromium evaporation, and area-specific resistance (ASR) of the uncoated and Ce/Co-coated steels are studied for up to 3000 h. Ce/Co-coated steels showed significant improvement in behaviour compared to their uncoated counterparts. The oxidation and chromium evaporation behaviour between the uncoated steels varied substantially while the Ce/Co coated steels exhibited highly similar behaviour. The area-specific resistance of the coated low-cost steels was on par with Crofer 22 APU. However, 430 formed a continuous silica layer, resulting in a higher ASR after 3000 h. Cross-sections of the uncoated and Ce/Co-coated steels were analysed using a scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy

The relationship between premarital sexual behaviors and the state of the marriage

The current study examined the possible relationship between premarital sexual behaviors and the state of the marriage as reported by women. Participants were recruited from local Southern Baptist churches and were sent an anonymous mail-out questionnaire; 36 women returned questionnaires that were usable for analyses. Bivariate correlations for the variables that were considered demonstrated that the number of premarital sexual intercourse partners for the participant and her husband were strongly and negatively correlated to marital satisfaction, marital stability, low divorce thoughts, and feelings about the marriage. An analysis of variance showed that the women who experienced premarital sex (intercourse or oral sex) with at least one noncommitted partner had lower marital satisfaction than the women who did not experience premarital sex with a noncommitted partner
