    Quantum Mechanical Approaches for Piezoelectricity Study in Perovskites

    In this chapter, we show the procedures we have been used to theoretically investigate the piezoelectric effects in perovskites. The construction of extended basis sets using the generator coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) method is shown, as well as the strategies used to contract extended basis sets and to evaluate their quality in molecular calculations. Besides, we show adequate procedures to choice polarization and diffuse functions to best represent the studied crystal. In addition, we also discuss conditions under which GCHF basis sets and standard basis sets from literature can be used to theoretical investigation of piezoelectricity in perovskites. We finalize the chapter presenting and discussing the results for investigations of piezoelectricity with standard basis sets for barium and lanthanum titanates. To conclude, we present evidences that BaTiO3 and LaTiO3 may have piezoelectric properties caused by electrostatic interactions

    Mesophase evolution in heat-treated solid petroleum pitches

    A combination of analytical techniques was used to follow the mesophase evolution of petroleum pitches in the solid phase. The samples were characterized by matrix assisted laser desorption and time of flight analysis by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), high field 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR), low field ¹H NMR, electron spin resonance (EPR), polarized optical microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). MALDI-TOF-MS revealed an oligomeric distribution of molecular weights in the pitch: monomeric (m/z 200 to 400), dimeric (m/z 400 to 650), trimeric (m/z 650 to 950) and tetrameric (m/z 950 to 1600), an essential factor for the production of carbon fibers, among other advanced composite of carbon. Relaxation time (T1) studies permitted to observe two large areas: the aromatics and the mesophases. These results also showed that the heating time increases the mesophasic area. Also through direct and non-destructive 13C NMR measurements, we obtained the content of aromatic and aliphatic carbons, as well as the degree of protonation of these carbons. Optical microscopy with polarized light showed the interfaces between the anisotropic and isotropic regions as well as the process of coalescence of mesophase. The results obtained by the other techniques corroborate the MALDI-TOF-MS and NMR results.Uma combinação de técnicas analíticas foi utilizada para acompanhar a evolução da mesofase em pixes de petróleo em fase sólida. As amostras foram caracterizadas por dessorção a laser assistida por matriz, seguida de espectrometria de massas por tempo de vôo (MALDI-TOF-MS), ressonância magnética nuclear de 13C (13C NMR) de alto campo, ¹H NMR de baixo campo, ressonância eletrônica de spin (EPR), microscopia ótica polarizada e análise termogravimétrica (TGA). A análise por MALDI-TOF-MS revelou uma distribuição oligomérica de pesos moleculares no pixe: monomérica (m/z 200 a 400), dimérica (m/z 400 a 650), trimérica (m/z 650 a 950) e tetramérica (m/z 950 a 1600), fator essential para a produção de fibras de carbono, bem como outros compósitos de carbono. Estudos de tempo de relaxação (T1) permitiram a observação de duas grandes áreas: a dos aromáticos e a de mesofase. Estes resultados também mostraram que o tempo de aquecimento aumenta a área de mesofase. Através de medidas não destrutivas de 13C NMR, foram obtidos os conteúdos de carbonos aromáticos e alifáticos, e também o grau de protonação desses carbonos. A microscopia ótica com luz polarizada mostrou as interfaces entre as regiões anisotrópicas e isotrópicas, bem como o processo de coalescência da mesofase.     Effect of artesunate-mefloquine fixed-dose combination in malaria transmission in amazon basin communities

    Background: Studies in South-East Asia have suggested that early diagnosis and treatment with artesunate (AS) and mefloquine (MQ) combination therapy may reduce the transmission of Plasmodium falciparum malaria and the progression of MQ resistance. Methods: The effectiveness of a fixed-dose combination of AS and MQ (ASMQ) in reducing malaria transmission was tested in isolated communities of the Jurua valley in the Amazon region. Priority municipalities within the Brazilian Legal Amazon area were selected according to pre-specified criteria. Routine national malaria control programmatic procedures were followed. Existing health structures were reinforced and health care workers were trained to treat with ASMQ all confirmed falciparum malaria cases that match inclusion criteria. A local pharmacovigilance structure was implemented. Incidence of malaria and hospitalizations were recorded two years before, during, and after the fixed-dose ASMQ intervention. In total, between July 2006 and December 2008, 23,845 patients received ASMQ. Two statistical modelling approaches were applied to monthly time series of P. falciparum malaria incidence rates, P. falciparum/Plasmodium vivax infection ratio, and malaria hospital admissions rates. All the time series ranged from January 2004 to December 2008, whilst the intervention period span from July 2006 to December 2008. Results: The ASMQ intervention had a highly significant impact on the mean level of each time series, adjusted for trend and season, of 0.34 (95% CI 0.20 - 0.58) for the P. falciparum malaria incidence rates, 0.67 (95% CI 0.50 - 0.89) for the P. falciparum/P. vivax infection ratio, and 0.53 (95% CI 0.41 - 0.69) for the hospital admission rates. There was also a significant change in the seasonal (or monthly) pattern of the time series before and after intervention, with the elimination of the malaria seasonal peak in the rainy months of the years following the introduction of ASMQ. No serious adverse events relating to the use of fixed-dose ASMQ were reported. Conclusions: In the remote region of the Jurua valley, the early detection of malaria by health care workers and treatment with fixed-dose ASMQ was feasible and efficacious, and significantly reduced the incidence and morbidity of P. falciparum malaria.CNPq [309156/2007-6]PAHO/WHOBrazilian Ministry of HealthUSAI

    Diversity of lactic acid bacteria of the bioethanol process

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bacteria may compete with yeast for nutrients during bioethanol production process, potentially causing economic losses. This is the first study aiming at the quantification and identification of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) present in the bioethanol industrial processes in different distilleries of Brazil.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 489 LAB isolates were obtained from four distilleries in 2007 and 2008. The abundance of LAB in the fermentation tanks varied between 6.0 × 10<sup>5 </sup>and 8.9 × 10<sup>8 </sup>CFUs/mL. Crude sugar cane juice contained 7.4 × 10<sup>7 </sup>to 6.0 × 10<sup>8 </sup>LAB CFUs. Most of the LAB isolates belonged to the genus <it>Lactobacillus </it>according to rRNA operon enzyme restriction profiles. A variety of <it>Lactobacillus </it>species occurred throughout the bioethanol process, but the most frequently found species towards the end of the harvest season were <it>L. fermentum </it>and <it>L. vini</it>. The different rep-PCR patterns indicate the co-occurrence of distinct populations of the species <it>L. fermentum </it>and <it>L. vini</it>, suggesting a great intraspecific diversity. Representative isolates of both species had the ability to grow in medium containing up to 10% ethanol, suggesting selection of ethanol tolerant bacteria throughout the process.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study served as a first survey of the LAB diversity in the bioethanol process in Brazil. The abundance and diversity of LAB suggest that they have a significant impact in the bioethanol process.</p

    Radiação fotossinteticamente ativa incidente e Refletida acima e abaixo do dossel de floresta de Mata Atlântica em Coruripe, Alagoas

    The study of solar radiation is important to understand the several physical, chemical and biological processes that occur in the biosphere, particularly in the forest. The objective of this study has been to evaluate the temporal evolution of incident and reflected Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR) above and below the canopy of the Mata Atlantica forest. The study has been conducted in a Private Reserve Natural Heritage, located in the Coruripe city, Alagoas, during the period from October 2009 to September 2010, based on the PAR (2, 13, 26 m) observations obtained at the micrometeorological station, installed on a 24 meters high tower (10° 17' 36"S, 36° 17' 24"W, 160 m asl). According to the results the incident and reflected PAR outside (PAR↓_Ext and PAR↑_Ext) and inside (PAR↑_Spf) forest follow the seasonality imposed by the apparent motion of the Sun. The higher PAR values occur during the dry season, exceeding 600 and 12 W m-2, and during the wet season these averages was less than 300 and 8.0 W m-2, influenced by cloudiness. At the beginning and ending of sunlight time PAR↑_Spf values near zero were measured. The opposite measurements of about 14 W m-2, around 12 h (November and December) were observed

    Pesca do apaiari, Astronotus ocellatus (Agassiz, 1831), e perfil socioeconômico dos pescadores artesanais de uma região da Amazônia brasileira

    The artisanal fishery is an important economic and subsistence activity among traditional populations in the Amazon Region. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize the fishery of apaiari, Astronotus ocellatus (Agassiz, 1831), and to present a socioeconomic profile of artisanal fishermen in the region lakes of Pracuúba, Amapá, Brazil. From May to August 2011 interviews were conducted using standardized forms with fishermen selected by "snowball" method and aged above 18 years old. A total of 68 fishing workers were interviewed, of which 55 were men and 13 women. It was possible to observe that fishing workers have a wide knowledge of fishery in the Region, including apaiari fishery, and that social and economic lives of the Pracuúba population depend totally of the artisanal fishery
