Research and development for fabricating a simulated titanium alloy Y-ring segment for the S-IC fuel tank Phase I and II REPORT, 30 Jun. 1965 - 11 Feb. 1966
Design and processing development, and tooling and fabrication plan for S-IC fuel tank Y-ring segmen
Roll diffusion bonding of titanium alloy panels
Roll diffusion bonding technique is used for fabricating T-stiffened panel assemblies from titanium alloy. The single unit fabrication exhibits excellent strength characteristics under tensile and compressive loads. This program is applied to structures in which weight/strength ratio and integral construction are important considerations
Quantum gravity at a large number of dimensions
We consider the large- limit of Einstein gravity. It is observed that a
consistent leading large- graph limit exists, and that it is built up by a
subclass of planar diagrams. The graphs in the effective field theory extension
of Einstein gravity are investigated in the same context, and it is seen that
an effective field theory extension of the basic Einstein-Hilbert theory will
not upset the latter leading large- graph limit, {\it i.e.}, the same
subclass of planar diagrams will dominate at large- in the effective field
theory. The effective field theory description of large- quantum gravity
limit will be renormalizable, and the resulting theory will thus be completely
well defined up to the Planck scale at GeV. The
expansion in gravity is compared to the successful expansion in
gauge theory (the planar diagram limit), and dissimilarities and parallels of
the two expansions are discussed. We consider the expansion of the effective
field theory terms and we make some remarks on explicit calculations of
-point functions.Comment: 18 pages, 23 figures (75 files), format RevTex4, typos corrected,

Mathematical Tools for Calculation of the Effective Action in Quantum Gravity
We review the status of covariant methods in quantum field theory and quantum
gravity, in particular, some recent progress in the calculation of the
effective action via the heat kernel method. We study the heat kernel
associated with an elliptic second-order partial differential operator of
Laplace type acting on smooth sections of a vector bundle over a Riemannian
manifold without boundary. We develop a manifestly covariant method for
computation of the heat kernel asymptotic expansion as well as new algebraic
methods for calculation of the heat kernel for covariantly constant background,
in particular, on homogeneous bundles over symmetric spaces, which enables one
to compute the low-energy non-perturbative effective action.Comment: 71 pages, 2 figures, submitted for publication in the Springer book

Does gravitational wave propagate in the five dimensional space-time with Kaluza-Klein monopole?
The behavior of small perturbations around the Kaluza-Klein monopole in the
five dimensional space-time is investigated. The fact that the odd parity
gravitational wave does not propagate in the five dimensional space-time with
Kaluza-Klein monopole is found provided that the gravitational wave is constant
in the fifth direction.Comment: 10 @ages, LATE
Exploring the potential role of coaching skills.
Part of our role is to develop and inspire the leaders of the future; so they will go onto deliver high quality healthcare services for all of us. However, inspiring leaders of the future is not as simple as including in a curriculum. Various reports examining the failures within the UK NHS seem to emphasize this unfortunately (Francis, 2012: Keogh, 2012: Morecambe Bay, 2015). Addressing intrinsic motivation is key in embedding the concept of leadership into our graduates, as future clinical leaders within the NHS. This is also where a coaching approach in both personal tutoring and in the class setting (team coaching) can work. Using a coaching approach we may begin to tap into that area below the waterline and encourage the student to reach their own solution; one which addresses their inherent motivation. In this invited talk I will outline some of those strategies and why you should consider building some of them into your practice.N/
Personal resilience for diagnostic radiographer healthcare education: Lost in translation?
A research study was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the concept of resilience from the perspective of the undergraduate students on a BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography programme; and the impact of resilience âtrainingâ interventions (based on some resilience coaching principles) prior to their first clinical placement. This article sets out the findings from a qualitative research study, analysed using thematic analysis, where students were asked about their definition of personal resilience. Few students used an approximation of the âtraditionalâ definition of resilience; indeed, some seemed to view resilience as a weakness or something to be guarded against. In terms of what students thought affected their resilience, there was no clear pattern; thus seeming to confirm that resilience is personal, and therefore questioning a one-size approach in relation to resilience âtrainingâ. There could be some merit in encouraging discussion around resilience in the academic setting, but there are some considerable caveats. At the outset fostering an understanding of resilience as a positive trait seems important, otherwise discussion about resilience in a class or tutorial setting may not be received by the learner in the way we may hope or expect.N/
Renormalized Kaluza-Klein theories
Using six-dimensional quantum electrodynamics () as an example we
study the one-loop renormalization of the theory both from the six and
four-dimensional points of view. Our main conclusion is that the properly
renormalized four dimensional theory never forgets its higher dimensional
origin. In particular, the coefficients of the neccessary extra counterterms in
the four dimensional theory are determined in a precise way. We check our
results by studying the reduction of on a two-torus.Comment: LaTeX, 36 pages. A new section added; references improved, typos

Some Heuristic Semiclassical Derivations of the Planck Length, the Hawking Effect and the Unruh Effect
The formulae for Planck length, Hawking temperature and Unruh-Davies
temperature are derived by using only laws of classical physics together with
the Heisenberg principle. Besides, it is shown how the Hawking relation can be
deduced from the Unruh relation by means of the principle of equivalence; the
deep link between Hawking effect and Unruh effect is in this way clarified.Comment: LaTex file, 6 pages, no figure
