Restoration of UA_A(1) symmetry and meson spectrum in hot or dense matter

We explore the effects of breaking and restoration of chiral and axial symmetries using an extended three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model that incorporates explicitly the axial anomaly through the 't Hooft interaction. We implement a temperature (density) dependence of the anomaly coefficient motivated by lattice results for the topological susceptibility. The spectrum of scalar and pseudoscalar mesons is analyzed bearing in mind the identification of chiral partners and the study of its convergence. We also concentrate on the behavior of the mixing angles that give us relevant information on the issue under discussion. The results suggest that the axial part of the symmetry is restored before the possible restoration of the full U(3)$\otimes$U(3) chiral symmetry might occur.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. Alternate islands of multiple isochronous chains in wave-particle interactions

We analyze the dynamics of a relativistic particle moving in a uniform magnetic field and perturbed by a standing electrostatic wave. We show that a pulsed wave produces an infinite number of perturbative terms with the same winding number, which may generate islands in the same region of phase space. As a consequence, the number of isochronous island chains varies as a function of the wave parameters. We observe that in all the resonances, the number of chains is related to the amplitude of the various resonant terms. We determine analytically the position of the periodic points and the number of island chains as a function of the wave number and wave period. Such information is very important when one is concerned with regular particle acceleration, since it is necessary to adjust the initial conditions of the particle to obtain the maximum acceleration.Comment: Submitte

A dinâmica dos sistemas de produção praticados na reserva extrativista do Rio Cajari no Estado do Amapá.

Este trabalho aborda um tipo específico de extrativismo: o extrativismo da castanha-do-Brasil (Bertholletia excelsa H.B.K) realizado na Reserva Extrativista do rio Cajari no Estado do Amapá (RESEX/CA). O trabalho é uma continuidade da pesquisa participativa realizada no ano de 2000, e tem como foco principal compreender a dinâmica dos sistemas de produção praticados nesta reserva extrativista no período 2000/2005. A partir da metodologia Typologie à dire d´experts (Perrot, 1991), percebemos que as mudanças ocorridas nos sistemas de produção no período estudado, evidenciam que além de fatores de ordem econômica, a permanência das práticas agrícolas com o extrativismo da castanha se rege por outros fatores. A relação histórica de uso da floresta com o extrativismo e as agriculturas é bem mais complexa, não podendo ser avaliada apenas do prisma econômico. Os dados demonstram que as unidades de produção extrativistas são aquelas de menor desempenho econômico, e, apesar disso, não há um movimento das famílias em acabar com esse sistema. Ao contrário, o tipo extrativista não apenas se manteve, mas aumentou de representatividade de 2000 para 2005, indicando atratividade deste tipo para as famílias da RESEX/CA. Entretanto, os sistemas agroextrativistas também cresceram, indicando que algumas famílias procuram alcançar melhores níveis de qualidade de vida, através da agricultura. Em se tratando de uma unidade de conservação de uso direto, para esta reserva extrativista deveria ser direcionadas ações de apoio aos castanheiros da RESEX/CA, para que eles pudessem ter melhores condições de vida, sem ter que investir em outras atividades, que não o extrativismo

Response to tilted magnetic fields in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 with columnar defects: Evidence for transverse Meissner effect

The transverse Meissner effect (TME) in the highly layered superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+y) with columnar defects is investigated by transport measurements. We present detailed evidence for the persistence of the Bose-glass phase when H is tilted at an angle theta < theta_c (T) away from the column direction: (i) the variable-range vortex hopping process for low currents crosses over to the half-loops regime for high currents; (ii) in both regimes near theta_c(T) the energy barriers vanish linearly with tan(theta) ; (iii) the transition temperature is governed by T_{BG}(0) -T_{BG}(theta) sim |tan(theta)|^{1/\nu_{\perp}} with \nu_{\perp}=1.0 +/- 0.1. Furthermore, above the transition as theta->\theta_c+, moving kink chains consistent with a commensurate-incommensurate transition scenario are observed.
