Hydrazine network on Cu(111) surface: A Density Functional Theory approach

We have used first-principles calculations, including a correction for the dispersive forces (DFT-D2), to investigate the arrangement of hydrazine (N2H4) molecules upon adsorption on the Cu(111) surface, showing that surface–molecule interactions affect the process most. Our calculations provide insight into the interplay between lateral adsorbate–adsorbate and vertical adsorbate–substrate interactions. We found that the main contributors to the assembly of the hydrazine layers are the binding interactions between the adsorbates and the substrate. The dispersion forces are predominant in both vertical and lateral interactions, whereas hydrogen-bonding is least important and organisation of the N2H4 monolayers is therefore primarily due to the long-range interactions. Optimised geometries for several hydrazine conformations were found to be coverage-dependent. The electronic properties such as charge density and density of states have been calculated for different hydrazine coverages, and indicated that no charge transfer occurs between molecules. Scanning tunnelling microscopy images were simulated, where the observed protrusions arise from the trans conformers. We also found that the effect of hydrazine adsorption on the Cu(111) surface energy is negligible and further investigation of other Cu facets is needed to determine the N2H4 effect on the nanoparticles' morphology. Finally, we have simulated the temperature programmed desorption of different coverages of hydrazine from the Cu(111) resulting in desorption peaks between 150 and 200 K

    A noncommutative Bishop-de Leeuw theorem

    Get PDF
The Bishop-de Leeuw theorem asserts the equivalence of various sort of peaking phenomena for function spaces in C(X)C(X). We discuss a noncommutative version of this theorem for an operator system SS in B(H)B(H) in terms of either the representations of C(S)C*(S) or of Ce(S)C^*_e(S). Under certain conditions on SS, C(S)C^*(S), or Ce(S)C^*_e(S), we exhibit connections between Choquet points and noncommutative peak points

Measuring and Explaining the Increase of Travel Distance: A Multilevel Analysis Using Repeated Cross Sectional Travel Surveys

Structural and behavioural factors drive the growth and change of spatial mobility in the industrialised countries: on the macro level we have observed tremendous increases in travel demand as measured by person miles travelled. This paper studies this development of mobility of tripmaking adult persons on working days by analysing micro data as it is provided by the four National Travel Surveys (NTS) that were conducted in Germany since the mid seventies. In order to fully capture the context which determines individual behaviour, we account for the nested hierarchy of persons within households within spatial settings by using a multilevel modelling approach. In addition we investigate the prediction power of a few classic socio-demographic variables for the daily travel distance of individuals in the four data sets. We find that after controlling for the covariates considered, the total variance of daily travel distance decreases over time, this decrease stemming both from the INDIVIDUAL and the HOUSEHOLD level. We further find that traditional socio-demographic household and person characteristics diminish in importance to explain person mileage. Significance and amount of the variance components taken together indicate some AREA level effect and strong HOUSEHOLD level context effects on individual daily distance. Thus it is important to consider all conceptual levels which generate significant variation in the mobility indicator under study.

Warehouse manpower planning strategies in times of financial crisis: evidence from logistics service providers and retailers in the Netherlands

    Get PDF
The economic crisis that is experienced in Europe has a large influence on transport and logistics companies. Since turnover typically drops strongly during a crisis, companies try to reduce costs in order to survive. The study reported in this paper has investigated how manpower planning in warehouses has been used to counter effects of the crisis and what the results are of the measures taken. A survey was carried out among warehouses run by retailers and logistics service providers. The results of the survey show that there is a significant relation between a decrease in turnover and the four investigated manpower planning strategies. Furthermore, the study shows that the most effective manpower planning strategies are flexible planning of employees and balancing the workload. Hence, the study concludes that in particular better operational planning is a key strategy to counter the effects of the financial crisis, which is an important insight for the management of warehouses
