Superfluid and Fermi liquid phases of Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices
We describe interacting mixtures of ultracold bosonic and fermionic atoms in
harmonically confined optical lattices. For a suitable choice of parameters we
study the emergence of superfluid and Fermi liquid (non-insulating) regions out
of Bose-Mott and Fermi-band insulators, due to finite Boson and Fermion
hopping. We obtain the shell structure for the system and show that angular
momentum can be transferred to the non-insulating regions from
Laguerre-Gaussian beams, which combined with Bragg spectroscopy can reveal all
superfluid and Fermi liquid shells.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Social Interaction in Pain: Reinforcing Pain Behaviours or Building Intimacy?
To date, pain research has focused almost exclusively on operant models to interpret the function and predict the consequences of pain-related interaction in chronic pain couples. However, evidence suggests that intimacy models of interaction may provide additional and alternative explanations for pain interaction. Specifically, intimacy models conceptualize verbal complaints about pain-related distress as emotional disclosure, which the partner may validate or invalidate. This review compares and contrasts models of pain-related interaction in chronic pain couples, describes limitations of the existing research, and offers directions for future research drawing upon a social support framework
Superfluid and Mott Insulating shells of bosons in harmonically confined optical lattices
Weakly interacting atomic or molecular bosons in quantum degenerate regime
and trapped in harmonically confined optical lattices, exhibit a wedding cake
structure consisting of insulating (Mott) shells. It is shown that superfluid
regions emerge between Mott shells as a result of fluctuations due to finite
hopping. It is found that the order parameter equation in the superfluid
regions is not of the Gross-Pitaeviskii type except near the insulator to
superfluid boundaries. The excitation spectra in the Mott and superfluid
regions are obtained, and it is shown that the superfluid shells posses low
energy sound modes with spatially dependent sound velocity described by a local
index of refraction directly related to the local superfluid density. Lastly,
the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and vortex-antivortex pairs are
discussed in thin (wide) superfluid shells (rings) limited by three (two)

Learning Bodily and Temporal Attention in Protective Movement Behavior Detection
For people with chronic pain, the assessment of protective behavior during
physical functioning is essential to understand their subjective pain-related
experiences (e.g., fear and anxiety toward pain and injury) and how they deal
with such experiences (avoidance or reliance on specific body joints), with the
ultimate goal of guiding intervention. Advances in deep learning (DL) can
enable the development of such intervention. Using the EmoPain MoCap dataset,
we investigate how attention-based DL architectures can be used to improve the
detection of protective behavior by capturing the most informative temporal and
body configurational cues characterizing specific movements and the strategies
used to perform them. We propose an end-to-end deep learning architecture named
BodyAttentionNet (BANet). BANet is designed to learn temporal and bodily parts
that are more informative to the detection of protective behavior. The approach
addresses the variety of ways people execute a movement (including healthy
people) independently of the type of movement analyzed. Through extensive
comparison experiments with other state-of-the-art machine learning techniques
used with motion capture data, we show statistically significant improvements
achieved by using these attention mechanisms. In addition, the BANet
architecture requires a much lower number of parameters than the state of the

Implementation of Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROMs) from specialist pain clinics in England and Wales:experience from a nationwide study
INTRODUCTION: Evaluating outcomes in routine clinical practice is a significant challenge for specialist pain clinics due to the complexity of interventions provided and the subjective nature of pain. This study reports findings from implementation of Patient Reported Outcomes (PROMs) in pain clinics in England and Wales between 2011 and 2013. METHODS: A paper-based questionnaire was administered at a first appointment in participating centres. This assessed quality of life, experience of health care and health care usage with postal follow-up at 6 and 12 months by the research team. Feasibility was assessed in terms of response rates, completion rates and outcomes. RESULTS: Ninety-one (56%) clinics participated, entering 9,588 patients (19% of those eligible). For responders, there was a 92% item completion rate. The dropout rate was high, 46% and 19% returned questions at 6 and 12 months, respectively. Quality of life at baseline was low, with a mean EQ5D-3L Time Trade Off value of 0.32. Amongst responders at 12 months, 92% continued to experience significant pain. For those with planned discharges 30% achieved the Minimal Important Change for quality of life. Nonetheless, 70% reported positive experiences of care. CONCLUSIONS: Patients attending UK pain clinics report an extraordinarily poor quality of life and difficulty with understanding their condition. Problems with PROMs implementation included initial recruitment, follow-up response rates, classification systems and benchmarking. Successful implementation should include use of electronic data capture, feedback and focus on gradual improvement. To achieve this would require extended periods of funding. SIGNIFICANCE: No nationwide evaluation of the effectiveness of specialist pain clinics had previously been attempted. Comparison of patient outcomes from services enables improvement. This work provides a platform to improve methods of routine PROMs capture in pain clinics, measure clinical effectiveness and identify areas for potential research
Chronic-Pain Protective Behavior Detection with Deep Learning
In chronic pain rehabilitation, physiotherapists adapt physical activity to
patients' performance based on their expression of protective behavior,
gradually exposing them to feared but harmless and essential everyday
activities. As rehabilitation moves outside the clinic, technology should
automatically detect such behavior to provide similar support. Previous works
have shown the feasibility of automatic protective behavior detection (PBD)
within a specific activity. In this paper, we investigate the use of deep
learning for PBD across activity types, using wearable motion capture and
surface electromyography data collected from healthy participants and people
with chronic pain. We approach the problem by continuously detecting protective
behavior within an activity rather than estimating its overall presence. The
best performance reaches mean F1 score of 0.82 with leave-one-subject-out cross
validation. When protective behavior is modelled per activity type, performance
is mean F1 score of 0.77 for bend-down, 0.81 for one-leg-stand, 0.72 for
sit-to-stand, 0.83 for stand-to-sit, and 0.67 for reach-forward. This
performance reaches excellent level of agreement with the average experts'
rating performance suggesting potential for personalized chronic pain
management at home. We analyze various parameters characterizing our approach
to understand how the results could generalize to other PBD datasets and

Small crater populations on Vesta
The NASA Dawn mission has extensively examined the surface of asteroid Vesta,
the second most massive body in the main belt. The high quality of the gathered
data provides us with an unique opportunity to determine the surface and
internal properties of one of the most important and intriguing main belt
asteroids (MBAs). In this paper, we focus on the size frequency distributions
(SFDs) of sub-kilometer impact craters observed at high spatial resolution on
several selected young terrains on Vesta. These small crater populations offer
an excellent opportunity to determine the nature of their asteroidal precursors
(namely MBAs) at sizes that are not directly observable from ground-based
telescopes (i.e., below ~100 m diameter). Moreover, unlike many other MBA
surfaces observed by spacecraft thus far, the young terrains examined had
crater spatial densities that were far from empirical saturation. Overall, we
find that the cumulative power-law index (slope) of small crater SFDs on Vesta
is fairly consistent with predictions derived from current collisional and
dynamical models down to a projectile size of ~10 m diameter (Bottke et al.,
2005a,b). The shape of the impactor SFD for small projectile sizes does not
appear to have changed over the last several billions of years, and an argument
can be made that the absolute number of small MBAs has remained roughly
constant (within a factor of 2) over the same time period. The apparent steady
state nature of the main belt population potentially provides us with a set of
intriguing constraints that can be used to glean insights into the physical

COVID-19 and undeclared work: impacts and policy responses in Europe
The Coronavirus pandemic has led to restrictions on movement and workplace closures, resulting in governments offering temporary financial support to enterprises and workers. This paper evaluates a group unable to access this financial support, namely those in the undeclared economy, and possible policy responses. To identify the service industries and workers involved, a late 2019 Eurobarometer survey of undeclared work in Europe is reported. This reveals that undeclared work is particularly prevalent in the hospitality, retail and personal services sectors and identifies the population groups over-represented. Given that this undeclared workforce is now largely unable to work, it will be argued that providing access to temporary financial support, through a voluntary disclosure initiative, would be a useful initiative not only to provide the income support these enterprises and workers need but also to bring them out of the shadows and put them on the radar of the state authorities
Impacto das Piores Experiências Escolares em Estudantes: Um Estudo Retrospectivo Sobre Trauma
AbstractThe literature indicates damage to students' mental health in cases of school violence. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the psychological impact of school victimization in university students, and to analyze the association between PTSD symptoms and variables related to school victimization. 691 University students responded to the Portuguese version of the Student Alienation and Trauma Survey (SATS). Clinically significant scores in the subscales ranged from 4.7% (somatic symptoms) to 20% (hypervigilance), with frequent symptoms described in the literature resulting from school victimization, such as depression, hopelessness, cognitive difficulties, and traumatic event recollection. Additionally, 7.8% of participants presented PTSD symptoms after suffering their "worst school experience". Associations were found between PTSD symptoms and the level of distress after the experience, as well as the perceived benefits after the event, and duration. The results confirm the potential detrimental effects of school victimization, and may be useful to further investigations on this topic.ResumenLa literatura indica que casos de violencia en el contexto escolar causan daños a la salud mental de los estudiantes. El objetivo de este estudio retrospectivo fue evaluar el impacto psicológico de la victimización escolar en estudiantes universitarios y analizar la asociación de los síntomas de TEPT con variables relacionadas a la victimización. Un total de 691 estudiantes universitarios respondieron a la Escala de Experiencias Traumáticas en los Estudiantes. Puntuaciones clínicamente significativas en las subescalas oscilaron entre el 4,7% (síntomas somáticos) y el 20% (hipervigilancia), y se encontraran síntomas frecuentes descritos en la literatura resultante de victimización, tales como: depresión, desesperanza, problemas cognitivos y recuerda excesiva del evento traumático. Además, el 7,8% tenía síntomas de TEPT un mes después de su peor experiencia escolar. Se encontraran asociaciones con los síntomas de TEPT y el malestar que se siente después de la experiencia; beneficios percibidos después del evento y su duración. Los resultados indican el potencial nocivo de las experiencias de victimización escolar y pueden contribuir a investigaciones futuras.ResumoA literatura indica a existência de danos para a saúde mental de estudantes em casos de violência no contexto escolar. O objetivo deste estudo retrospectivo foi avaliar o impacto psicológico da vitimização escolar em estudantes universitários e analisar a associação dos sintomas de TEPT com variáveis relacionadas à vitimização. No total, 691 estudantes universitários responderam à Escala sobre Experiências Traumáticas em Estudantes. Escores clinicamente significativos nas subescalas variaram de 4,7% (sintomas somáticos) a 20% (hipervigilância), sendo frequentes sintomas descritos na literatura resultantes de vitimização, como: depressão, desesperança, dificuldades cognitivas e rememoração do evento traumático. Adicionalmente, 7,8% apresentaram sintomas de TEPT após a sua pior experiência escolar. Foram encontradas associações entre os sintomas de TEPT e o incômodo sentido após a experiência, benefícios percebidos após o evento e duração do mesmo.
