This paper studies the derivation of basic description statistics for interval-valued datasets. We propose a geometrical approach in the determination of summary statistics (central tendency and dispersion measures) for interval-valued variables

    The High Frequency Instrument of Planck: Requirements and Design

    The Planck satellite is a project of the European Space Agency based on a wide international collaboration, including United States and Canadian laboratories. It is dedicated to the measurement of the anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) with unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution. The detectors of its High frequency Instrument (HFI) are bolometers cooled down to 100 mK. Their sensitivity will be limited by the photon noise of the CMB itself at low frequencies, and of the instrument background at high frequencies. The requirements on the measurement chain are directly related to the strategy of observation used for the satellite. Due to the scanning on the sky, time features of the measurement chain are directly transformed into angular features in the sky maps. This impacts the bolometer design as well as other elements: For example, the cooling system must present outstanding temperature stability, and the amplification chain must show, down to very low frequencies, a flat noise spectrum

    Long-Term Survival in Octogenarians After Surgical Treatment for Colorectal Cancer:Prevention of Postoperative Complications is Key

    BackgroundWhether to treat octogenarians with colorectal cancer (CRC) in the same manner as younger patients remains a challenging issue. The purpose of this study was to analyse postoperative complications and long-term survival in a consecutive cohort of octogenarians who were surgically treated for CRC.MethodsOctogenarians with primary CRC suitable for curative surgery between January 2008 and December 2011 were included. Data about comorbidities, tumour stage, and complications were retrospectively collected from patient files. Data about survival were retrieved with use of the Dutch database for persons and addresses. To identify factors associated with severe postoperative complications and postoperative survival, logistic regression analyses, and Cox regression analyses were performed. Odds ratios and hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated.ResultsIn a series of 108 octogenarians, median age was 83years (range 80-94years). Median follow-up was 47 (range 1-107) months. Major postoperative complications occurred in 25% of the patients. No risk factors for development of severe postoperative complications could be identified. The 30-day mortality was 7%; 1- and 5-year mortality was 19% and 56%, respectively. Overall median survival was 48months: 66months in patients without complications versus 13months in patients with postoperative complications. Postoperative complications were most predictive of decreased survival (HR 3.16; 95% CI 1.79-5.59), even including tumour characteristics, comorbidity, and emergency surgery.ConclusionsLong-term survival in octogenarians deemed fit for surgery is reasonably good. Prevention of major postoperative complications could further improve clinical outcome.</p

    The Nuclear Yukawa Model on a Lattice

    We present the results of the quantum field theory approach to nuclear Yukawa model obtained by standard lattice techniques. We have considered the simplest case of two identical fermions interacting via a scalar meson exchange. Calculations have been performed using Wilson fermions in the quenched approximation. We found the existence of a critical coupling constant above which the model cannot be numerically solved. The range of the accessible coupling constants is below the threshold value for producing two-body bound states. Two-body scattering lengths have been obtained and compared to the non relativistic results.Comment: 15 page

    Polarization of the WMAP Point Sources

    The detection of polarized sources in the WMAP 5-year data is a very difficult task. The maps are dominated by instrumental noise and only a handful of sources show up as clear peaks in the Q and U maps. Optimal linear filters applied at the position of known bright sources detect with a high level of significance a polarized flux P from many more sources, but estimates of P are liable to biases. Using a new technique, named the "filtered fusion technique", we have detected in polarization, with a significance level greater than 99.99% in at least one WMAP channel, 22 objects, 5 of which, however, do not have a plausible low radio frequency counterpart and are therefore doubtful. Estimated polarized fluxes P < 400 mJy at 23 GHz were found to be severely affected by the Eddington bias. The corresponding polarized flux limit for Planck/LFI at 30 GHz, obtained via realistic simulations, is 300 mJy. We have also obtained statistical estimates of, or upper limits to the mean polarization degrees of bright WMAP sources at 23, 33, 41, and 61 GHz, finding that they are of a few percent.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures.     The MAST motional Stark effect diagnostic

    A motional Stark effect (MSE) diagnostic is now installed and operating routinely on the MAST spherical tokamak, with 35 radial channels, spatial resolution of ∼2.5 cm, and time resolution of ∼1 ms at angular noise levels of ∼0.5°. Conventional (albeit very narrow) interference filters isolate π or σ polarized emission. Avalanche photodiode detectors with digital phase-sensitive detection measure the harmonics of a pair of photoelastic modulators operating at 20 and 23 kHz, and thus the polarization state. The π component is observed to be significantly stronger than σ, in reasonably good agreement with atomic physics calculations, and as a result, almost all channels are now operated on π. Trials with a wide filter that admits the entire Stark pattern (relying on the net polarization of the emission) have demonstrated performance almost as good as the conventional channels.     Design and Performance of Hot Mix Asphalts with High Percentages of Reclaimed Asphalt: Approach followed in the Paramix Project

    The use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RA) in new asphalt pavements can provide important economical savings, while reducing the negative environmental impact. The European research project PARAMIX aims to improve the techniques for hot mix recycling in plant and cold mix in situ recycling, so as to increase the amount of reclaimed asphalt and develop competitive road pavement rehabilitation techniques. This paper deals with the design of hot mix asphalts for the project. The different phases in the design process are described: the characterization of the reclaimed asphalt and the new material components, the volumetric mix design procedure and the laboratory study. Two types of mixes were considered: stone mastic asphalt and asphalt concrete. The percentages of reclaimed asphalt in these mixes were high: up to 30 % for the SMA and 50% for the asphalt concrete. The results of the performance tests show the feasibility to design and optimize good quality hot mix asphalts with a high percentage of reclaimed asphalt.
